1 Studia bot. hung. 25, pp , 1994 DATABASE OF THE HUNGARIAN VASCULAR PLANTS (HUNGPLANT)* Z. K. DOBOLYI 1, F. HORVÁTH 2, L. LŐKÖS 1 and T. SZERDAHELYI 1 1 Department of Botany, Hungarian Natural History Museum H-l476 Budapest, Pf: 222, Hungary 2 Institute of Ecology and Botany, Hungarian Academy of Science H-2163 Vácrátót, Hungary The HUNGPLANT database is the current checklist of the Hungarian vascular flora completed with information on nomenclature, taxonomy, ecological values and nature conservation ranks of taxa. The data were fed into PC by dbase III Plus program. The HUNGPLANT database now is available by computer network, in BRS/SEARCH system, sponsored by the Coordination Office for Information Infrastructure (BAKONYI 1988). It consists of 3098 records in 21 fields. Key words: vascular plants, computerized database, Hungary INTRODUCTION The greatest problem of the coenological investigations is the heterogeneity of parameters to be disposed and used for evaluation. Researchers use in many instances different categories of coenological and floral elements even in the same country. Thus the data of different publications are not commensurable and the results are not comparable. Not only the dispersion of computers made the quick evaluation of data matrixes possible, but the evaluation and the comparison of the coenological samples have been made by standard way. Building this database was the first step to organize and standardize data into a modern information system and synthesize botanical, coenological, ecological and nature conservation knowledge of the Hungarian flora. Researchers of several institutes took part in building the previous test version (HORVÁTH 1990). The HUNGPLANT database contains latin names and the main paramètres of taxonomic, ecological and nature conservation ranks of the Hungarian vascular plants. MATERIALS AND METHODS HUNGPLANT is mainly based on SoÓ's Synopsis ( ) and on its supplementary volume by PRISZTER (1985). Consequently, some results on taxonomy of our flora published after 1985, were ignored. The occurrence data of * This work was supported by the Hungarian Research Fund (OTKA 3171). Studia Botanica Hungarica 25, 1994 Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest
2 taxa were disregarded in case of insignificant importance, likely extinction or doubtful reference. In the course of the database building a standardization of the information was necessary to terminate the heterogeneity of data, thus a reasonable simplification and reduction of the Synopsis entries were achieved. In absence of adequate information the subspecies field category is the same as the species field. To offer a better arrangement for the users we reduce the great number of floral element categories to a definite limit and sorted the entries as follows: the most important information are given in the Fll field and the accessory data are in the F12 field. Most of the TWR values correspond to Prof B. ZÓLYOMI's publications (1964, 1966). Missing data were discussed and completed by Prof T. SIMON in the Department of Plant Taxonomy and Ecology, Loránd Eötvös University, by using and collecting data of Prof P. JAKUCS, Prof T. PÓCS and Dr A. HORANSZKY. The greatest difficulties were caused by the heterogeneity of the coenological characters. Similarly to the floral element categories, two fields were set up again for each species (or subspecies). The most characteristic association (-group) are given in the Ccl field, while the less characteristic, but still important association(-group) are given in the Cc2 field. Data used in HUNGPLANT had been compared in details with the data of the new plant identification handbook (SIMON 1992) before that book was published.
