3 GENUINE MONEY TWO TYPES OF PRINTING Intaglio (engraving) Special thick inks are applied to these plates, from which the image is transferred to the paper using over 20 tons of pressure. The result of this process is raised relief (three-dimensional appearance). Typographic process uses raised metal numbers/letters and seals which are then inked and pressed against the paper, much like an old typewriter operates. PAPER FOR GENUINE MONEY All denomination of the currently issued FRN s are printed on special paper made with a blend of cotton and linen (genuine currency contains no wood pulp) exclusively at the Crane Paper Company at Dalton, Massachusetts. Special red and blue fibers are added to the paper during production as an authentication or security feature. 3

(Front and Back) Check serial numbers. No two bills should have the same serial number Compare a suspected note with a genuine note of the same denomination. 4

5 All numbers and letters should be legible even the front plate and back plate numbers. Pay close attention to the quality of printing and paper. (Feel is a dead give a way) The portrait should appear lifelike and standout from the background. The saw tooth points on the treasury seal are clear distinct and sharp. The currency paper has tiny red and blue fiber embedded throughout. You should not see colored dots or any colors except black and green. Look for the Security thread. Make sure you can read the denomination on it. Watermark(1996) Make sure the portraits are the same Shifting color ink - bottom right hand denomination. 5

6 RAISED NOTES A lower denomination bill altered to a higher denotation usually by cutting the corners off bills. BLEACHED NOTES Bleach of small denomination and print a larger denomination on genuine paper. QUESTIONS? 6

7 IDENTITY THEFT Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information to take over your credit accounts, open new ones, take out a loan, rent an apartment, access bank accounts, or commit many other crimes using your identity. When it strikes, the effects can be devastating. What's more, because it frequently involves no physical theft, identity theft may not be noticed by its victims until significant damage has been done -- often, several months and thousands of dollars later. HOW DO THIEVES DO IT? First, they steal your personal information by Going through your mail or trash, looking for bank and credit card statements, pre-approved credit offers, and tax information. Opening new credit card accounts using your name, date of birth, and Social Security number. When they use the credit cards and don't pay the bills, the delinquency is reported on your credit report. ACTUALLY TAKES OVER YOUR IDENTITY applies for credit obtains employment rents or purchases a resident obtains utilities purchases a car does not pay any of the bills. commits criminal activity/arrested under your name. 10 ANY TYPE OF CHECK CAN BE COUNTERFEIT. PERSONAL CHECKS OFFICIAL CHECKS PAYROLL CHECKS VERSA CHECK PROGRAM MOST WILL HAVE A LEGITIMATE ACCOUNT NUMBER AND ROUTING NUMBER. THE ROUTING NUMBER WILL NOT NECESSARLY BELONG TO THE BANK LISTED ON THE CHECK. DRAWN ON LOCAL COMPANY THINGS YOU CAN DO TALK WITH THE CLIENT PRESENTING THE CHECK. VICTIM/SUSPECT CHECK FOR IDENTIFICATION. CHECK TO SEE IF ROUTER NUMBER BELONGS TO ISSUING BANK ON THE CHECK. LARGE GROUP COMES IN TOGETHER WITH THE SAME COMPANY CHECKS CALL THE CUSTOMER. 10
