1 Fats, Oils and Grease Educational Kit When you think of fats, oils and grease, you might say yuck. Well, the real yuck comes when fats, oils and grease are not disposed of properly. Fats, oils and grease come from meats, lard, cooking oil, butter and shortening. This stuff can clog sewer pipes, which can cause untreated wastewater (the stuff from your sinks, washing machines and even toilets) to overflow into your house, into the street, and into the storm drains that lead to the ocean. Sewage spills are not only gross, they re unhealthy for you, your family and friends, and the environment. It costs a lot of money to clean up spills. The best way to stop fats, oils and grease from building up in the sewer is by keeping them out. At home, you should never pour fats, oils and grease down the drain. You also shouldn t refrigerate or freeze fats, oils and grease and then throw them out because they will melt again. Instead, they should be mixed with absorbent trash like coffee grounds, paper towels, shredded newspaper or kitty litter and then disposed of in the trash. Restaurants are now required to collect their fats, oils and grease and store them in containers that are sent to recyclers for processing. To protect the environment, we need everyone s help. Don t let anyone pour fats, oils or grease down the drain. Have fun with some of the games and puzzles that are here. Thanks for making a difference today!
