A. Knowledge and understanding Knowledge and understanding of: (1) Knowledge of Manufacturing Disciplines Including: Industrial Systems Manufacturing Technologies Technology and Innovation Management Leadership and Management of People Sales, Marketing, Business Strategy & NPD Entrepreneurship Finance & Accounting Page 1 of 5
2 (2) Context of Industrial Systems within a wide range of business/industrial sectors (3) Understanding different types of enterprise from start-up through SME to national and international enterprise Acquisition of 1 is through a combination of taught course modules that include lectures from internal and external speakers and exercises, visits to industrial companies and project work. Acquisition of 2 is primarily through the industrial visits programme underpinned by foundation lectures and visiting industrial speakers Acquisition of 3 is through industrial visits, company project work and the long dissertation project Class Tests at the end of taught modules will check retention and understanding of lectured material. Industrial practice assessment is through measuring the application of the knowledge in project work. Some of the modules have integrating exercises which allow the graduates to demonstrate ability to apply the knowledge, these normally end with a presentation, for which the graduates are given feedback. of the long project is based on a dissertation of not more than 15,000 words Skills and other attributes B. Intellectual (thinking) skills able to: 1. Critical Analysis 2. Creativity Generate a variety of innovative solutions 3. Evaluation Evaluate designs, processes and products using information from a variety of sources and justify recommendations 4. Balance Theory and Practice Intellectual skills are developed through the teaching and learning programme outlined above (and in the last section). Analysis and problem solving skills are further developed through a series of industrial projects. Each graduate undertakes up to four projects which vary in length from 2 to 3 weeks and in small teams composed of 2 or 3 students. The projects take place in industrial premises and require a high level of problem solving ability for success. Individual feedback is given to students on all work produced. In exercises and projects students are required to identify and develop a number of creative solutions and a methodology for choosing the optimum solution. The conclusions of the project report include a special section where the students comment on the balance of theory and practice deployed on the project. The projects are assessed against 10 criteria demonstrated by a presentation and a written report. The criteria include the quality of analysis that has gone into the project solution. Page 2 of 5

Determine appropriate methodology for problem solution 4. Identify, gather, analyse and evaluate appropriate data 5. Prepare a business and finance case to justify a recommendation The graduates are given preparatory classes in problem identification techniques, standard methodologies, analysis and financial justification techniques. However, the main learning takes place within the project work where the graduates will have to use all 1-5 skills in each of the projects. Students are required to undertake pre-project research to identify possible models, tools and techniques that may be required in the project. The project assessment has criteria for quality of approach, including problem identification, use of an appropriate methodology, data gathering and analysis, and meeting the company objectives in terms of a solid business case. D. Transferable skills able to: 1. Communicate effectively (in writing, verbally and graphically) 2. Presentations 3. Written reports 4. Project management 5. Working with others 6. Networking Skills 1-4 are taught by lecture and exercise and reinforced by project work and the M.Phil thesis. Skill 5 is introduced by lectures and exercises and the project work generally takes place in teams. Skill 6 is inherent in the company visits and project process. The assessment of skills 1 5 are built into the project assessment process. The graduates are given feedback on their overall progress during the mentor sessions. They are also required to self assess their performance and to compare their assessment with that of the project tutor and the company sponsoring the project. Programme structures and features, curriculum units (modules), credit and award requirements The programme is only offered as a full-time course. The course lasts for nine months and ends with the award of an M.Phil in Industrial Systems, Manufacture and Management. The Course is not classed and the M.Phil is awarded on a pass fail basis. The Graduates have to achieve a satisfactory performance in their industrial project work, and satisfactorily complete an M.Phil Thesis of not more than 15,000 words. Students whose work is outstanding (ie >75% in both elements of the course assessment) will be considered for the award of Distinction. Structure The Course comprises the following elements; the order and content is liable to change from year to year as part of a continuous improvement plan: Page 3 of 5
4 Induction: a four week module aimed at developing a satisfactory standard in presentation, report writing and problem solving skills to enable the graduates to complete their first project. The graduates are given foundation lectures covering all manufacturing disciplines and visit a range of factories, there is an exercise to contrast and compare different approaches to manufacturing and the organisation of different industries. The module ends with an outward bound exercise to demonstrate simple elements of teamwork. Induction Project: A two or three week two person project to demonstrate problem solving skills and to understand data gathering in industry. Industrial Systems: A two week module that looks at the systems that link the disparate elements of the manufacturing enterprise. These include production planning, quality, shop floor data capture, design and design management, finance and personnel management Industrial Systems Projects: These follow the taught module and allow the graduates to compare the theory of the taught module with industrial practice. Manufacturing Technology: This introduces the graduates to the full range of manufacturing processes both in theory and by visits to a wide range of companies. It contains an exercise to research material and process selection for a common artefact. Manufacturing Technology Projects: A two week project, usually in a manufacturing technology environment. Technology and Innovation Management: This module introduces the context of technology and innovation management, innovation and innovation processes, strategic technology management, technology management frameworks and processes, technology and innovation management tools and techniques, business models to support technology and innovation management. Leadership & Management of People: This module covers aspects of personal development in relation to learning individual leadership and management styles and interactions with others. Aspects of setting personal objectives and change management are also addressed. The second part considers practical team working and leadership in action. Marketing, Business Strategy & Entrepreneurship: Two week module that looks at marketing from strategy to implementation through to design processes and new product development management. The second week focuses on entrepreneurship including: new venture creation, idea generation and product design, customers and markets, and funding. Marketing & Design Projects: Two week project in a company which needs a particular focus on sales and marketing or a project on concept or embodiment design. Company Audit Tour: A two week tour of either Europe or a further away destination. The graduates will visit approximately 20 companies based around a theme of relevance to modern manufacturing that they will develop during the planning phase. Dissertation Project: The graduates will work on a 13 week long, individual research project in collaboration with one of the Institute s Research Centres. This will form the basis of the M.Phil thesis.
