4 An Introduction to Employment Law Dates & Details: DATE SPEAKERS DETAILS 7 th October :30pm 7pm Jeffrey Jupp & Alex Young An Introduction to the Employment Tribunal This introduction is for junior barristers, trainee and newly qualified solicitors who will have undertaken little or no advocacy in the Employment Tribunal. It is designed to give basic practical guidance on presenting cases in the tribunals and will cover oral and written advocacy, case management and pre-hearing reviews, dealing with litigants in person, and compromising claims at the tribunal.. 20 th October 2010 Tim Walker & Patricia Leonard Unfair & Wrongful Dismissal 5:30pm 7pm This talk is designed as an introduction to the concepts of unfair dismissal. It will help attendees to place into a practical and legal context the protection provided to employees by the current employment protection legislation and the statutory jurisdiction exercised over unfair dismissal by the Employment Tribunals. It will deal with the concept of unfair dismissal and its inter-relationship with the civil remedy of wrongful dismissal. It also aims to provide a brief introduction to the principles of fair and unfair dismissals, both substantive and procedural, from both an employer s and an employee s perspective, introducing the principles applicable in cases of conduct, capability, and redundancy.

5 An Introduction to Employment Law Dates & Details: DATE SPEAKERS DETAILS 4 th November :30pm 7pm Jeffrey Jupp & Jonathan Bertram TUPE A practical introduction to TUPE This seminar will aim to provide a guide to what you need to know about TUPE for the purposes of day-to-day practice. It will be presented by way of a short lecture and then a discussion of some practical examples. 25 th November :30pm 7pm Smair Soor & Christina Lyons Discrimination An introduction to discrimination law covering the principals of dealing with such cases including procedure. All strands of discrimination law in the employment field will be addressed. It is aimed at providing a basic but comprehensive coverage and increasing confidence in this area.

6 Tim Walker Call 1984: Tim offers extensive experience in employment law. He appears regularly in unfair and wrongful dismissal claims in the Employment Tribunal and civil courts, acting for both employer and employees, as well as advising clients generally on employment matters: TUPE, redundancies, stress at work and discrimination. The enforcement of post-termination covenants is an area of particular interest. He also appears in financial and medical disciplinary tribunals. Smair Soor Call 1988: Smair is a highly experienced practitioner in all types of employment cases and employment litigation, with a strong emphasis on discrimination law. He acts both for respondents and claimants in substantial, high-profile cases and has represented major PLCs, local authorities and other public bodies as well as trade union members. He also appears in disciplinary and professional misconduct proceedings.

7 Jeffrey Jupp Call 1994: Jeffrey is regularly instructed on behalf of individuals, private employers, local authorities and insurers in all aspects of employment and discrimination law. He also appears in medical and financial disciplinary and regulatory tribunals. Discrimination Unfair Dismissal TUPE Equal Pay High Court Actions Data Protection and Human Rights in the Workplace Disciplinary Tribunals Jonathan Bertram Call 2003: Jonathan has a wide ranging employment practice. He acts for Claimants and Respondents. He has undertaken numerous multi-day hearings all over the country and has appeared in the EAT on several occasions. His cases have concerned all types of dismissals, ancillary breach of contract claims, claims for non-payment of bonuses, claims arising from mass redundancies, working time claims, equal pay claims, TUPE claims and claims concerning all forms of discrimination. His clients include small to medium sized employers, insurers, unions, local authorities and public bodies such as Her Majesty s Land Registry.

8 Christina Lyons Call 2004: Christina has a keen interest and experience in employment and discrimination law including unfair and wrongful dismissal, redundancy and discrimination in respect of sex, race, religion/belief and disability discrimination. In addition to her advisory work, Christina regularly appears in the Employment Tribunal and the Employment Appeal Tribunal on behalf of individuals, charities and trade unions in areas including banking, health, catering and government. Christina speaks regularly both in-house and to local authorities on employment topics. Recent talks have been on the Employment Act 2008, discrimination and redundancy. Patricia Leonard Call 2007: Patricia practises in all areas of employment law including unfair and wrongful dismissal, discrimination and redundancy and regularly appears in front of the Employment Tribunal. Patricia often gives in-house presentations to solicitors, for example Redundancy and Discrimination in March 2009 and Enforcement Show me the money in April Patricia s multinational education has allowed her to develop a detailed knowledge of three different legal systems; Irish, English and French. She is fluent in French, English and Irish.

9 Alex Young Call 2004: Alex joined chambers in October 2009 following completion of a year s pupillage. During that time he trained under Timothy Walker, one of chambers leading employment specialists, from whom he gained a great breadth of experience in highend employment litigation. Whilst still a pupil Alex fought and won a two-day unfair dismissal claim, beating an offer of settlement by some 4,000. Since joining chambers he has acted for both claimants and respondents in a number of cases, including recently winning a threeday constructive dismissal claim with some 500 pages of evidence. Alex has also acted in cases involving TUPE, minimum wage disputes, part time worker discrimination and indirect sex discrimination. He is willing to advise in the pre-action and pre-hearing phases of litigation.
