2 The,]iosquiloes of South Carolina 211 Original plans were to extend the work over a period of years on the premise that worth-while information on the hionomics of the mosquitoes of the state might be obtained. In this paper, however, consideratio a will 1)e given to the geographic distril)ution of the different species of mosquitoes encountered. At the onset of hostilities in 1941, this work was interrupted. O1)servatit)ns, theref()re, extended over a period of three complete years (1938, 1939, and 1940) and a portion t)f the preceding year and the f( llowing 3e tr. The studies indicate(l al)ove were directed primarily t()war(l informati()n relative to anopheline mosquitoes, although all mosquitoes encountered were ct)llected and identified. Selected stati()ns were visited repeatedly once each week, and observations were n a(le in search of adult mosquitoes and of larvae. During the calendar year, 1939, when detailed observations were n ade once each week at a numl)er of stations in thirty-five of the f()rtv-six cormties i the state, t greater numl)er of ol)servati()ns were acc()mplished than (luring any other year. During the period of i atensification of military training, large nnml)ers ()f military personnel were concentrated in some of the southeastern states. \Vith the view of protecting these in(livi(luals from n alaria, the presence, the prevalence, and the distribution mosquitoes throughout the area have acc()rdingly bee a subjects of interest a, d study. Such studies have yielded additional infor?nation. and worth-while contrit)ntio as have been na(le to the (listril)' - tion records (References 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 14, 21, 28). The distribution records as determined l)y these ctmmlativefforts are coml)ined in this paper with the hope that they may 1)e a sot rce of inf( rmation to futnre workers seeking information on the 1)resence, prevalence, and distribution of the osqtfitoes of S()nth Carolina. For the sake of completeness, certain existing records previously reported are inch (le(l in this summary which is presented as a partial distribt tion recor(l of mosqtfitoes f( r the state. Fifty-four species are recognize(l. Numerous observations are reported, and indivi(lual records are toc) nun erous to be listed separately. The earliest available record in each county is shown for each species with the locality from which collected, the date of collection, name of collector, n tn e of making the deternaination, with refereeaces to the records. Some of the earliest recorded collections are these: Genus ANOPHELES Meigen.4nopheIes atropos D. and K. Beaufort Co., Parris Island (date unknown), J. D. Carter, der. W. V. King {7, 15, 24).
