2 Tennessee Business Education Association 2010 Annual Report The Tennessee Business Education Association (TBEA) is affiliated with the Southern Business Education Association (SBEA), the National Business Education Association (NBEA), the Tennessee Association for Career and Technical Education (TACTE), and the National Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). PURPOSE The Tennessee Business Education serves middle school business teachers, high school business teachers, technical/community college professors, university professors, and other business educators. Through TBEA, the officers and members strive to: expand opportunities for professional growth and development, program development and marketing. focus on current issues in business education as well as career and technical education. assist and advise the Tennessee Department of Education in promoting the expansion and improvement of business and information technology programs within the state. cooperate with other states, affiliate organizations, and individuals interested in the further development of business education as well as career and technical education.

3 GOVERNING BOARD The Executive Board is the governing board for the Tennessee Business Education Association. The Board is composed of the elected officers of the association (past-president, president, president-elect, secretary, and treasurer) six regional representatives, the Tennessee Business and Information Technology Consultant, TBEA/SBEA/NBEA Membership Director, Publications Editor, and the Legislative Representative. Committees are appointed by the President and approved by the Executive Board. The Tennessee Business Education Association Executive Board meets twice a year. These meetings are held in the spring and fall. The annual business meeting and the election of officers and board members takes place at the annual TBEA Conference in the fall. 6 TBEA The TBEA membership period is from July 1 through June 30. Anyone interested in working for the improvement of business education is eligible for membership in the Association. Professional dues are $15 and student dues are $5 per year. TBEA membership for consisted of 117 professional members and 50 student members, for a total of 167 members. PUBLICATIONS AND WEBSITE The TBEA newsletter and website ( provide useful information concerning upcoming conferences and professional development opportunities, Executive Board meetings, and provides general news and information to all members. The newsletter is published in the spring and fall of each year. TBEA EXECUTIVE BOARD RESTRUCTURE At the TBEA business meeting held during the September 2008 fall conference, proposed changes to the TBEA Constitution and Bylaws were approved. The TBEA Constitution changes primarily include the addition of a student representative to the board, reducing the number of representatives from each region, and updating specific organization names and title changes. The TBEA Bylaws changes include many of the same items, more specific responsibilities for board members and the publication committee, and quorum definition. PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCES/CONVENTIONS SBEA 2009, Huntsville, AL. Several TBEA members and guests attended the conference. Some Tennesseans served as presenters and coordinators for the very informative sessions. NBEA 2010, San Diego, CA. Several of our TBEA members attended the conference and had a great time networking with other educators across the nation. TBEA 2010, Murfreesboro, TN. The annual TBEA Conference was held September 24-25, 2010 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Murfreesboro, TN. The theme for the conference was TBEA: 2010 and Beyond. Dr. Gwen Bean, President-Elect, coordinated this year s conference. The keynote speaker for the Professional Development Luncheon was Ivan Jones, Director of the Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville, TN. The following sessions were presented at the 2010 conference: Networking Using Social Media, presented by Dr. Ronda Henderson, Middle Tennessee State University. Teaching Soft Skills, presented by Bobbie Hawkins, Southwest Tennessee Community College

Alice Huskey, Motlow State Community College, lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Invocation was given by Dr. Stephen Lewis, Chair of the Department of Business Communications and Entrepreneurship, Middle Tennessee State University. After officer reports and committee reports, the following individuals were elected and installed to the TBEA Executive Board: Dr. Gwen Bean, President; Dr. Vincent Smith, President-Elect; Dr. Sherry Roberts, Secretary; Marlena Dixon, Treasurer; Roberta Niedergeses, Past-President; Vicki Robertson and Tanika Lester, West Tennessee Representatives; Genna Troup and Jim Veale, Middle Tennessee Representatives; Sherra Witt and Megen Saez, East Tennessee Representatives. Dr. Gwen Bean, Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville, received the 2010 TBEA Postsecondary Business Teacher of the Year Award.
