8 Indian Standard IS : SPECIFICATION FOR DISPOSABLE PLASTIC ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION PIPETTES FOR CATTLE o. FORE WORD 0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted hy the Indian Standards Institution on 4 December 1973, after the draft finalized by the Animal Housing and Equipment Sectional Committee had been approved hy the Agricultural and Food Products Division Council. 0.2 For national livestock development programme, artificial insemination ( AI ) technique is being increasingly used. A series of Indian Standards nil AI equipment is being' issued for guidance of manufacturers and for safety of cattle, 0.3 The 1110st important AI equipment is the inseminating pipette. These pipettes are made of different materials, such as glass and plastics. As glass pipettes require frequent sterilization and as imperfect sterilization may result in the dissemination of diseases, disposable plastic AI pipettes have been considered suitable. This standard, therefore, prescribes dimensions of plastic pipettes and specifies the quality of plastic, The standard also includes sterilization procedure (see Appendix A ) The curved anterior end of the plastic pipettes is not considered necessary as these pipettes arc pliable and liable to bend during operation. The curved pipettes, therefore, have not been prescribed in this standard. 0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS: *. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard prescribes the dimensions, material of construction and test for pia-die AI pipettes. If Rules for rounding off numerical values ( "vis,d). 3

9 IS: ' TERMINOLOGY 2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall apply. 2.1 Anterio.. End - The pipette end which goes inside the genital organ, 2.2 Chamfering - The surface produced hy bevelling an edge or corner. 2.3 Lumen - Hollow tubular hole of the pipette. 2.4 Posterior End - The pipette end which remains out and attached with a syringe. 3. TYPES 3.1 Depending on the size, the plastic AI pipette shall be of the following two types Long - The pipettes for cows and buffaloes shall be 420 ± 3 rom long Short - The pipette for inseminating heifers shall be 400 ± 3 rom long. 4. REQ,UIREMENTS 4.1 Material- The pipette shaii be constructed Iiom food grade polystyrene or any plastic material of suitable chemical properties, 4.1 Dimensions - The pipette shall con1ply with the dimensions given in l:i~ CODstructioD Anterior End - The anterior end shall be rounded with a radius of approximately l's rom externally and the bore shall be slightly chamfered a~ illustrated in l~ig. I Posterior End - The posterior end of the plastic pipette shall be finished at right angles to the access of the pipettes and the internal and external sharp edges shall be removed by slight chamfering. 4.4 Finish - - The pipette shall he free from cracks, blisters and chippings. The entire body of the tube shall be well polished to give the pipette smooth finish. The lumen shall he uniform throughout this length and shall he open at both ends. 5. PACKING AND MARKING 5.t PackiDI-The plastic pipettes shall be packed individually in polyethylene. They may also be packed individually in multicornpartment packs in such a way that each pipette is separable from the other without exposing the rest of t hem, S.I.I One millilitre gradation mark should be clearly indicated on the pipettes. 4

NOTE - The use of the lsi Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The lsi mark 011 products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing ancl quality control which is devised and supervised by lsi and operated by the producer. lsi marked products are also continuously checked by lsi for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the lsi Certification l\iark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may he obtained from the Indian Standards Institution. 6. SAMPLING 6.1 The representative samples of the material shall he drawn according to procedure prescribed in Appendix B. 7. TESTS 7.1 Visual Examination and Inspection--Each pipette shall be examined and inspected for general construction and marking requirements specified in this standard. 7.2 Test for Uniformity - Calculate the theoretical mass of pure mercury which could be filled in the pipette by the following formula: mass in g = 'IT r 2 1z X 13 6 where 22 'IT = 7' r = radius in em, h == height in em, and 13-6 == density of mercury in gjcm'', Then fill in distilled mercury in a clean pipette and weigh the pipette. calculated and weighed value should not vary hy more than :l percent. APPENDIX ( Clause 0.3 ) A STERILIZATION METHOD The A.l. PROCEDlJRE A-I.l The pipettes manufactured should be washed thoroughly and air dried before packing them ill. polyethylene bags. The pipettes so packed should he subjected to 2 5 ml{ dosage of gamma radiation which has penetrating p()w~r through the parking. The above dosage of gamma radiation is considered standard dosage for complete sterilization. 6

SCALE OF SAMPLING B-1..1 Lot- In any consignment, the pipettes of the same size, type and preferably belonging to the sau1c hatch of manufacture shall be grouped together to constitute a lot. B-l.2 For ascertaining the conformity to the requirements of this specification, test shall be carried out separately for cach lot.
