2 An innovative validator for enhanced passenger experience Real-time rearview mirror system RailEye Based on its long experience and know-how, AMCO S.A. introduces SV-360, its new generation of contactless validator for easy and secure fare collection management on bus, tramways and light rail services. This multi-functional tool combines aesthetic design, robustness and high performance in processing a variety of electronic fare media options including smart cards, printed or mobile QR codes, NFC, and also supports bank cards. Tailored to modern passenger needs, SV-360 features a 7 touch colour display, attractive user interface, bright indication LED light bars and a 3W audio system to ensure instant transactions as well as enhance a rider s experience. Apart from secure and unhindered validation transactions, this device is the ultimate marketing tool through promotional videos and animations played on the display. Its uniqueness lies in its ability to combine fare collection with mobile marketing by communicating with passengers the retail offers and discounts from companies cooperating with the transport operator for each route. The real-time rearview mirror system RailEye can be used as a traditional rearview mirror application as well as for door-monitoring purposes. In the basic version the electronic rearview mirror system consists of a monitor, two outdoor cameras and an intelligent video link. Thus, the rearview mirror system RailEye meets the requirements for security relevant applications, which specify the maximum latency period for CCTV systems for controlling and monitoring rail vehicles. The video link allows for intelligent vehicle-signal processing (e.g. door release, driving direction, speed) to automatically change the displayed image on the monitor in a desired manner (e.g. as full screen or multi-channel display such as split or quad screen). Only the intelligent video link is supplied with voltage by the vehicle and powers monitors and cameras. By the use of video-two-wire only one four-wire cable for video and power supply is needed. Due to the low installation and wiring effort the real-time rearview mirror system RailEye is suitable for new vehicles as well as refitting. 3 Innovative Display Systems ARIANE: Central Data Hub for Real-Time Passenger Information Real-time information to all stop points BBR Verkehrstechnik, founded in 1990 in Brunswick, Germany, develops electronic systems and components for the rail industry and for real-time passenger information systems. Axentia is showcasing their innovative ibus Display System for public transport. Addressing the two key issues of simple installation and secure 2-way communication, the ibus Display System uses battery powered displays using GSM/3G communication. The major advantages of having a display system for public transport that runs on batteries is low procurement cost, low installation cost, and a very simple and fast installation procedure. With a battery operation time exceeding 3 years, the service cost is very low. Further, using a wireless communication based on GSM/3G removes any cabling cost and enables any public transport network to start using the ibus Display System. With the ibus Display System, you can get started immediately, and increase the deployment as needs arise. Real-time information services can now be afforded over larger areas, bringing up to date information to all the places where it was previously not economically feasible to implement before. Any size of public transport network and any geographical spread of the network can use the ibus Display System. The ARIANE DPI server comprises an integrated data server as well as all interfaces widely used by public transport services. It covers the common VDV interfaces 452, 453, 454 and 461 and various proprietary interfaces e.g. to interlock units or Excel import formats for the nominal data import. The VDV interfaces are in use not only for data import, but also for exporting data to adjacent public transport carriers or associations. Thanks to this system layout, a display of dynamic data in the internet or on mobile devices can be achieved easily. Therefore, the ARIANE server can also operate as a central data hub. In this role, ARIANE can take advantage of its vehicle- and tour-based perspective. The purchase of a separate central data hub is thus not necessary. Interactive 46 full HD touchscreen terminals (MOFIS MEDIA. MIP), suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments, provide, in addition to access to scheduled itineraries and real-time passenger information, a fixed map of the rail network and an interactive map of the train stations, as well as display access points to other forms of public transport. All BBR displays are housed in vandal-proof casings and include an optional Text-to-Speech function for DPI, ensuring barrier-free access for visually impaired and blind persons. Since our start, DAT has focused on data collection (based on exciting different types of technology like, GSM, Bluetooth, WIFI, beacons, apps and Video Content Analysis), data-fusion, interpretation and visualisation as enablers for the next generation of trafficmodelling and simulation as well as crowd management. DAT has recently launched Sense.DAT, our own app for individual mobility monitoring, sampling and change motivation. With Sense. DAT all sorts of organisations will be able to get a deep insight into mobility behaviour and mobility choices people make, interview them on the reasons why and propose incentives to change. Sense. DAT is one of the technologies used in our monitoring projects, such as SAIL Amsterdam for example. DAT.Mobility has recently won and executed the monitoring of SAIL Amsterdam. Based on several technologies we have built the firstreal time crowd management dashboard ever. In cooperation with Delft University and the city of Amsterdam, DAT used a combination of various methods of real-time data collection and built the algorithms to model and simulate slow-mode mobility. For the very first time this has enabled Amsterdam to see in real time the movement of crowds at SAIL and predict potentially unsafe situations before they happen thanks to the measurements. DAT has also offered a Smart City Mobility Platform, based on our OmniTRANS traffic model, providing information about people, cars, bikes, buses and trains entering and leaving the city and event area. In response to market demand we have created a new software application: citylinedesigner. Its novelty lies in two aspects an advanced IT engine, as well as in the ideology behind the schedule design. A new system has been designed as an integrator of all the municipal IT systems in the field of transportation. It can combine and compute data from the schedule software, passenger information in vehicles and at stops / stations, Internet and mobile applications, traffic control systems, ticketing systems, depot management systems, web applications for carrier settlements and so forth. The biggest innovation are the optimisation modules that operate upon advanced mathematical tools and allow users to optimise transportation networks, fleet operations and to construct optimal schedules for driving personnel. Efficient, reliable and synchronised communication is the backbone of passenger satisfaction. Carriage optimisation makes it possible and simultaneously helps reduce operating costs an ideal situation for transportation authorities. By using most modern IT, mobile solutions and web services, the citylinedesigner is an efficient, quick and reliable tool that supports municipal transportation and allows for operations by involving multiple carriers and means of transportation. It supports the decision-making process while creating and editing timetables using automated validations against legal and internal regulations and requirements as well as physical constraints. The integration of various on-board systems into the vehicles and other IT systems used by carriers helps to distribute current timetable data. It can be transferred to the driving personnel, as well as to the passenger information screens in vehicles and at stops. 6 E-paper display dezign sets new benchmarks dezign stands for an electronic display system with zero energy consumption as it is based on e-paper technology. There is no need for costly paper exchanges to accommodate timetable or route changes. From a central office timetables can easily be adjusted with minimal environmental impact at the push of a button. The e-paper technology does not require any energy to display fixed content. Public transportation companies no longer need to drive around to each stop. As a result, operation maintenance and service costs can be drastically reduced. Additional functions, which will be presented at the IT-TRANS 2016 in Karlsruhe, make the e-paper display dezign from dresden elektronik even more appealing for the operator. An extended function is an integrated LCD panel to display real-time data e.g. at stops. This modification of a simplified dynamic passenger information system is characterised by its cost efficiency. With the integration of a vandalism proof push button the user has the possibility to switch the content itself on site. Several images can be held which the user can choose from. An additional feature is text-to-speech. Here again, there is an integrated push button which reads the content out loud while operating. In doing so, it is also possible to announce special information operated from a central station. As yet, there has been the classical variant Urban Station in a stainless steel or plastic case. Thereby, the display system gets integrated into an existing infrastructure and the data can be transmitted in three ways: serial interface, cellular radio or DAB+. The energy self-sufficient variant Green Station is currently in a test period. Using solar power updates can be performed and transmitted either via cellular radio or via DAB+. dezign features high-resolution (1.920 x 1.280) content on a 217 x 326 mm screen. The widespread use of smartphones and wearables, such as the Apple Watch, creates a host of new opportunities for transport companies to actively communicate with their customers and provide them with tailored information on their journeys. In this context, wearables are primarily not so much an additional mobile device to display information and tickets, but rather a great new way for passengers to easily and quickly interact with information and ticketing systems without having to pull out their smartphones. Getting timetable information and buying tickets using voice recognition, automatic display of nearby stops there are many ways for passengers to interact with the system. What is vital, though, is that it is simple to use and that the information is easy to understand. And although it is certainly necessary to have complex systems that guarantee a wide range of possible applications, such complexity should be something that runs in the background. Customers should be able to buy a ticket directly from the information display, from the catalogue menu or simply from their favourites list. These functions can be accessed on a smartphone, but also on the screen of a smart watch, making the entire range of tickets also available to customers on such devices. Together with HaCon, eos.uptrade is showing how passenger information and ticketing can be integrated, even beyond the actual ticket buying process. In the case of timetable deviations, real-time information makes it possible to keep passengers informed using push notifications, which would include, for example, re-routing proposals or, if required, would automatically rebook tickets. We also aim at providing ticket security during the inspection process. Inspecting mobile and online tickets using a barcode or visual inspection can often take quite a long time. The ivanto solution from GeoMobile GmbH, Dortmund, Germany, makes public transport accessible in two ways. The system enables even blind passengers to use public transport without the help of others. And it enables the world s first Smartphone-based BeInBeOut system. ivanto turns vehicles and station buildings into smart objects that are accessible for human interaction. The communication and control unit as provided by the system is connected to the computers on board buses and trams. In a current customer project at Verkehrsgesellschaft Ruhr Lippe, RLG, in the District of Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, ivanto will enable the world s first Smartphone-based CheckInBeOut best-price system in public transport. The transport vehicle itself offers to confirm the actual line number and station in the ivanto app when the passenger boards the bus. No further interaction is necessary when the passenger leaves the vehicle. ivanto determines the stop. A background system calculates the rate. With the help of this train LAN modem, public transport companies can make secure and efficient use of their communication infrastructure. IPmobil uses Power Line Technology (PLC) guaranteeing a high-speed data transfer throughout the train sets. Furthermore, it replaces VDV train bus. It does not matter on which side the driver s cab is located in the case of single-ended vehicles coupled to a train set. An IPmobil device is installed at each coupler to guarantee the data transmission in both directions. Due to specific data modulation, the existing infrastructure of the couplers or joints can be used to achieve data transmission rates of up to 200 Mbit/s. In addition, the device can be easily fixed to the couplers thanks to its compact design. IPmobil is controlled and provided with necessary updates by the on-board computer COPILOTpc2. This is why cars have had success with navigation systems for some time, mainly because they are able to safely and accurately guide drivers with a friendly voice to their destinations. But as soon as passenger leave their own car, they have to fend for themselves. Within the scope of the DYNAMO research project, Mentz has now developed the first multimodal trip companion in app format which accompanies passengers from door-to-door. Named companion, this app plans trips from one s current location to a final destination while taking into account all means of transport, real-time information and incident messages. This information can then be used to select a particular trip strategy, whether it be riding a bike to the station (Bike&Ride), driving there by car (Park&Ride), renting the closest available vehicle (free floating car hire) for the entire trip or using several other viable options. After the trip has been planned, the companion is activated and guides passengers visually and verbally along the way: In 50m turn right. 13 Schedule optimization software reduces Nateev Express deadhead trips and fleet size by more than 10% On board infotainment for less than 50 EUR per vehicle The pilot performed by Optibus showed us how we can get the best of both worlds: Optimal use of our resources, while complying with state regulations. These are the pillars of a profitable and successful bus operator company. Moshe Laskar (CEO, Nateev Express) The Pilot Looking to reduce its operating costs, bus operator Nateev Express decided to evaluate OptibusOnSchedule. This real-time schedule optimization solution calculates driver and vehicle schedules within seconds and allows schedulers to evaluate multiple options and determine the one that optimally suits their operational requirements. For the pilot, a 250 vehicle cluster was selected with the objective to reduce deadhead trips to a minimum. Optimization had to consider logistic constraints such as route homogeneity as well as depot locations and capacity. Results Using OptibusOnSchedule, Nateev Express compared multiple schedule scenarios to determine the one that delivered maximum efficiency while matching its operational environment. 14 Being mobile in rural areas - managing and controlling on-demand services Setting new standards Especially in rural areas, the much-cited shift in demographics, constantly increasing cost pressure and new travel habits are causing problems for the implementation of break-even public transport that is attractive and at the same time meets the population s needs. Flexible service offerings in public transport whether scheduled or unscheduled are becoming increasingly important for the comprehensive delivery of public transport services. Package deliveries are assembled daily into organised tours, since new customers must be reached every day. For many years, PSI has been developing a solution with complex optimisations and can use them flexibly in PSItraffic, allowing PSI to offer a proven solution for free area transport. Since a vehicle can always be operated less expensively the more passengers it carries, when no schedule and no stops are used, it is certainly important to pick up and drop off all the passengers in an optimised order.
