3 About our Program The development toward clean energy and sustainability affects most, if not all areas of the current and future global economy. GACC Midwest, through the framework of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy s renewablesmade in Germany Initiative, strives to offer ever more relevant programs in this area to benefit the companies and organizations we work with. Today s conference aims to explore synergies between two leaders in organic waste conversion. With over 76,000 farms and 1,000 food processing facilities across the state, Wisconsin has enormous potential to turn organic waste into home-grown, clean energy. In Germany, the industry has seen record growth over the past decade, allowing German companies to develop extensive experience in converting organic waste into energy. We are proud to present eight select German leaders in biogas technology, from component manufacturers to providers of turn-key biogas solutions that cover the entire value chain. 6 Speaker Biographies Rebecca Bertram, Program Director, Environment and Global Dialogue, Heinrich Böll Foundation North America Rebecca Bertram is a Program Director at the Heinrich Böll Foundation North America. She is responsible for the foundation s Environment and Global Dialogue Program, which fosters transatlantic and global dialogue in support of a low carbon economy agenda, with a particular focus on renewable energies. Prior to joining the foundation, Rebecca spent three years in the German government. She spent a year working on global energy security and governance issues with the Policy Planning Unit of the Foreign Ministry, and two years with the Ministry of Environment where she worked on European and transatlantic renewable energy issues. Rebecca holds a Masters degree in International Affairs and Economics from the Johns Hopkins University s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a joint Bachelor s degree in Political Science from the University of Kent and the Institut d Etudes Politiques de Paris (SciencesPo). more than 40 countries. Allison Costa, Program Manager, U.S. EPA AgSTAR and Co-Chair, Agriculture Subcommittee, Global Methane Initiative Midwest Allison currently works across the U.S. and internationally on collaborative efforts related to anaerobic digestion of livestock and agro-industrial wastes as manager of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s AgSTAR program and as a co-chair of the Global Methane Initiative Agricultural Subcommittee, an international partnership involving Prior to EPA, she worked with state and local governments in North Carolina on both environmental outreach and environmental health programs. Allison holds a BS in Biology and Politics from Wake Forest University and an MS in Geography and Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. 6

7 Michael Köttner, Managing Director, International Biogas & Bioenergy Centre of Competence (IBBK) With a master s degree in agricultural biology and a farmer by training, Michael Köttner has been involved in biogas and bio energy technology for more than 25 years. His career portfolio ranges from being a scientist and farmer in Germany, the U.S., and South Africa, to being a founding member and CEO ( ) of Europe s largest biogas association, the German Biogas Association, with almost 5,000 members today. Since 2000, he is the Managing Director of the International Biogas and Bioenergy Center of Competence (IBBK) and Chairman of the German Biogas and Bioenergy Society (GERBIO/FnBB). The main focus of his work is consulting and work training in the field of small scale decentralized biogas technology, plant oil for energy production, wood gas (gasification, pyrolysis), and ecological sanitation in a regional, national and international context. Patrick Serfass, Executive Director, American Biogas Council Patrick has led the American Biogas Council since early 2010 when he helped 22 companies come together to form the first and still only national biogas trade association in the U.S. The ABC now represents over 200 organizations and has a network of more than 8,000 stakeholders in the biogas industry. Before biogas, Patrick has over 12 years experience growing other clean energy industries, like solar and hydrogen energy, through the company that manages the American Biogas Council, Technology Transition Corporation. In Patrick s early career he has been a physical oceanographer, architectural engineer and designed unmanned deep ocean vehicles. 7

8 Marco Nicolai, Consultant on behalf of the "renewables made in Germany" Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, enviacon international Marco Nicolai works as a Consultant at enviacon international, an international consultancy headquartered in Berlin, Germany. At enviacon international, he is responsible for projects in the field of renewable energy with a focus on Latin American countries. Marco is a graduate of Latin America Regional Studies at the University of Cologne. During his interdisciplinary degree program, he specialized in energy economics. He gained practical experience in this field while working for the German-Chilean Chamber of Commerce in Santiago de Chile. Marco also spent a couple of months in Argentina and Central America. He is fluent in Spanish and English and has working knowledge of Portuguese. Clay Norrbom, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Global Infrastructure Asset Management LLC Clay Norrbom is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of Global Infrastructure Asset Management, an investment management firm focused on investments in infrastructure and renewable energy projects. Prior to founding GIAM, he was a Director in Citigroup s Global Banking group, where he provided financing and corporate finance advice to large asset managers, investment funds, and insurance companies. He served as a senior banker and credit officer in both the New York and London offices. A native of rural Wisconsin, Clay first worked as a financial planner for individuals and small businesses in Northern Wisconsin. At the time, he also served as one of the youngest elected mayors in Wisconsin history. Clay has an MALD (International Business) from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a BS in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service. He also sits on the International Advisory Committee of the Mergence Renewable Energy Debt Fund (a South African fund) and the Board of Directors of GreenWhey Energy, Inc. 8

9 Joe Zakovec, Wastewater Superintendent, City of Janesville, Wastewater Utility For the past 24 years Joseph Zakovec has been employed by the City of Janesville Wastewater Utility. Joe was hired as an Operator Trainee and worked his way up to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Grade IV Certified Operator. In 1997, he was promoted to Chief Operator and in 2009 was promoted to his current title of Superintendent. He holds a BS in Water Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with an emphasis in Wastewater Treatment. 9
