1 Faculty legislation granted up to 24 term credits + 6 credits physical education for military service during World War II. And all this legislation was subsequently repealed in 1957, At this time, the UO was on the quarter system and 183 credits were required for graduation. I append below a summary of the record; the actual records are appended to this report as it is a bit confusing and difficult to read. Peter B Gilkey Volume 4 Page 641. Wednesday 7 February A report is presented recommending 1. That military training be retained on a required basis and that machinery be worked out for liberalizing the administration of it. 2. That there shall be a standing committee of the faculty known as the Committee on Military Education. It shall consist of 7 members chosen as follows: five to be appointed from the faculty by its presiding officer, one from the student body appointed by the President of the ASUO, and the Professor of Military Science and Tactics at the time. The chairman shall be designated by the presiding officer of the faculty from the number of his appointees. This committee shall report to the faculty from time to time, advise with the military department on matters relating to coordination with the University as a whole, and have power to grant exemptions from required military courses taking into consideration the circumstances of each case particularly physical incapacity, conflicting outside employment, unavoidable conflicts in class hours and grounds of conscience. Wednesday January A committee is appointed to deal with the problem of granting credit and refunding fees of students entering military service. Reference is made to 4 mimeographed sheets that are not part of the record. However subsequent Assembly records of May 1957 show that the legislation in question authorizes academic credit for military service based on equivalent work generally accepted for college credit and prescribes the rights of students who are compelled to leave the University by reason of conscription or enlistment and which authorizes the granting of 24 term hours of credit for previous military work done by commissioned officers and 6 term hours of credits for non commissioned officers and which authorizes credit to be granted for academic work upon petition. Volume 4. Page Wednesday November The legislation of January is amended to read Also students who file with the registrar official documentary evidence of military service may petition the faculty for 6 term hours of credit in health and physical education.

Wednesday February The relevant faculty legislation is amended to read: academic credit for military service shall not exceed the following amounts for the pay grades listed below: 24 term hours for commissioned and warrant officers 21 term hours for first pay grade (e.g. M/Sgt.; C.P.O.) 18 term hours for second pay grade (e.g. T/Sgt.; P.O. 1/c) 15 term hours for third pay grade (e.g. S/Sgt.; P.O. 2/c) 12 term hours for fourth pay grade (e.g. Sgt.; P.O. 3/c) 9 term hours for fifth pay grade (e.g. Cpl.; S 1/c) 6 term hours for sixth and seventh pay grades (e. g. Pvt. Pfc. S 2/c) Volume 4. Page 849. Wednesday April In order to return the status of credits in military science and in physical education to the basis accepted prior to World War II, no credit shall be allowed for any military service entered upon after March Volume 4. Page Wednesday May Any person having one or more years of military service shall be exempt from the required work in the field of military science. Volume 4. Page 870. October the faculty legislation of April providing that no credit shall be allowed for any military service entered upon after March be repealed. Volume 4 Page 946. May The legislation of 1941 and of 1944 and of 1945 is repealed and replaced by credit for military service be limited to work of an academic character completed while in the Armed Forces in accordance with the recommendations of the Commission on Accreditation of Service experiences. The legislation of 1949 is modified to read a student be exempt from 3 term hours of required physical education activity courses and from the course requirements in military and air sciences upon filing with the registrar official documentary evidence showing that the student has completed six months active military duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. Finally the faculty legislation of 1934 cited above which creates a Committee on Military Education is repealed.
