1 Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences O Lord, Thou has searched me and known me! Thou knowest when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou discernest my thoughts from afar. Thou searchest out my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all man s ways.... For thou didst form my inward parts, thou didst knit me together in my mother s womb. I praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. --From Psalm 139 Majors: Psychology, Social Studies Education, Social Studies/History, and History/Political Science Minors: Behavioral Science, History, Political Science, Psychology (traditional & AGS*), and Sociology *(AGS version pending final approvals) Mission The mission of the Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences is to promote the development of intellectual and emotional coherence, to promote the effective interaction of individuals with society and with their environment, and to promote the development of an appreciation of the heritage of the Western world. Statement of Purpose In keeping with OWU s institutional purposes, the Division seeks to educate students to explore the interface between their academic discipline and the Christian faith, particularly in the historic Wesleyan tradition. This goal is pursued through the intentional integration of faith and learning in the divisional curricula (through discussions, writing assignments, devotions, and projects) as well as extra-curricular lectures (by Christian leaders in Psychology, History, and Political Science). Ultimately, the Division seeks to equip students to contribute meaningfully to society in the areas of history, political science, and psychology and to be agents of change in the culture in which they live. Divisional Distinctives The Division provides a curriculum for baccalaureate degrees in psychology, social studies/history, and history/political science and cooperates with the Division of Education to offer a degree in social studies education. The Division also provides courses in history, government, geography, sociology, and psychology to help meet the general education requirements for students majoring in other areas. The location of OWU in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, provides some unique opportunities for students interested in Native American history and the history of oil petroleum discovery and development. 1 of 10
