5 ABSTRACT Isna Maratus Sholikhah The Improvement of Listening Skill through CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) Method at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Babadan in the Academic year of 2009/2010. Program Study of English. Department of Education. State Islamic High School Ponorogo. Advisor (I) Dra. Aries Fitriani, M.Pd., (II) Mukhlison Effendi, M.Ag. Key words: Improvement, CALL method, Listening Skill The listening skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Babadan was still unsatisfactory and still needs improvement. Most of the students were not actively involved during the teaching and learning process; the students were not interested to listen because they rarely taught listening in the class and they needed interesting methods. These make their listening are bad. To overcome this problem, the researcher proposed one of the appropriate methods in teaching of English listening by using CALL method. The research, which aimed at increasing the students skill in listening skill by using CALL method for the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Babadan In The Schooling Year of 2009/2010, employed Collaborative Classroom Action Research. Both the research and her collaborator involved together in planning, implementing, observing the action, and reflecting the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students listening product. The subject of the study was one class of the class X.4 in the first semester of the schooling year 2009/2010. The research was conducted in two cycles, and each cycle was carried out in the one meeting. The finding proved that using CALL method had made the students listening skill much better. The steps were: (1) Describing the material related to the text would listen, (2) Students were listened the narrative text carefully on the OHP and the CD playing in twice, (3) The teacher distributed copies of analytic test form to the class, (4) The teacher instructed the students to sit in a pair, (5) Teacher assigned the students to retell the phases of that story in front of the class, and (6) The teacher provided a feedback toward each student s performance.
6 Based on the above findings, the suggestion are made: (1) it is suggested that the English teachers apply the CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) in the teaching listening, and (2) is suggested to future researcher to conduct a similar study by using CALL method with different setting and subjects for the increasing of teaching English listening.
