Further, the classes chosen are well-established courses with in the Muskingum curriculum. The minor is not embedded in any major currently offered by Muskingum. Appendix A has the responses from the different departments. g. proposed catalog description: Prc-Social Work Advisors, Associate Professor MEYER, STEVENSON, Assistant Professor BAK.HR Social work has been defined as a profession whose focus is "to promote human and community well-being." Further social workers will be "guided by a person and environment 1

2 construct, a global perspective, respect for human diversity, and knowledge based on scientific inquiry." Often social workers seek to actualize social and economic justice and to prevent "conditions that limit human rights, the elimination of poverty, and the enhancement of the quality of life for all persons." (The Council on Social Work Education, 2013) The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) acts as the accrediting body for degrees in social work at the baccalaureate, master, and doctoral level with a focus of shaping the profession's future through educating competent professionals, the generation of knowledge, and the exercise of leadership within the professional community. The accrediting body for social work programs requires certain skills of students entering at the master level. By reviewing the accreditation body's materials and the admissions requirements of the universities in Ohio who offer an accredited Master of Social Work degree, this course of study was created. The chosen courses provide the skills needed by students prior to applying to graduate programs in social work and allow for a strong foundation of skills and knowledge which can then be built upon by students as they enter graduate programs in social work. Statistics: BUSI 325 MATH 140 PSYCH 232 At least one of the following: CRMJ POLS 321,322 PSYC 363, 390 SOCI 320, 345 h. justification for change: Several graduates of both psychology, sociology, and child and family studies have successfully completed a Master of Social Work over the past years. An increasing number of students have been asking Dr. Hallie Baker about the option as well. Finally, with Dr. Steete's call to develop new programs, the timing seemed right to put forth this minor which would prepare students for graduate school after Muskingum. A master level in social work provides students greater choices and careers in their future as a terminal degree. Therefore this offers our students more choices once they have finished a bachelor's degree at Muskingum. Not only could this minor

We did discuss adding other courses but decided not to do so at this time. We are open to adding courses in the future. This decision was made in the context of a minor and based on the information provided by graduate programs and their preferences. So, I as chair for the fall semester and our members of the department are aware of the inclusion of Biology 106 into this minor. While the Political Science Department feels that the content of POLS 121 (Intro to Public Policy and Administration) might be more helpful to students wanting to pursue careers in social work, we understand your reasons for wanting to include POLS 111 (American Political System) instead and are not opposed to that decision.
