These two courses are paramount in the students overall program; therefore, they are encouraged to start the process of securing the agency early in their program. Identifying an agency and getting approval from the University can sometimes take several months, so it is never too early to start this process. Students may be uncertain of the human services area they wish to work in, but that makes this a great opportunity for them to explore the many options available. Agencies range from local Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, food banks, child care facilities, domestic abuse shelters, youth emergency services and many local health and human service offices. The recommends identifying human service agencies within the student s local community. This will give students an opportunity to network and be aware of what happens in their community. A student may seek employment in similar agencies when they graduate, and it is in the student s best interest to begin their search, for an agency at the beginning of the program. This should start as early as BSHS/305, but no later than BSHS/345. Students will find a copy of the BSHS Field Experience handbook, embedded in the first 5 courses of the core program. We want to remind the students Apollo Learning & Professional Development University of Phoenix is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (ncahlc.org) University of Phoenix, Inc. 4 4 of the importance of field experience, and ensure it is paramount in their planning. To reiterate, these volunteer field experiences provide great opportunities for students to network with other agencies. This experience helps students not only meet graduation requirements, but also prepare them for job searching on graduation. Be sure to refer to the BSHS Field Experience Handbook for more information. Each field experience is 175 hours spread out over 15 weeks resulting in the student spending 12 hours per week doing volunteer work. In addition to the hours spent in volunteer service, students will have in class time (2 hours) and assignments. The rationale for the assignments is to ensure students are merging what they learn in the field, with concepts in the weekly objectives. It is a combination of real work expertise and academic responsibilities, associated with Field Experience. Types of agencies to conduct the field experience work in: Youth organizations Retirement homes and hospice care facilities Church supported outreach groups Disaster relief agencies Local food banks, shelters, and foster care agencies Public safety agencies Mental health, addictions, and family support organizations Hospitals and community health agencies Legal and victim assistance groups Local, state, or government social services organizations, agencies, or groups.

5 B S H S Q U I C K F A C T S A N D I N F O R M A T I O N 5 O F 7 BSHS Program Enhancements Mental Health Facilitator training from the National Board for Certified Counselors-International (NBCC-I) NBCC-I s Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) program is an important tool for expanding mental health support in areas with underserved populations. This training is woven into the BSHS program throughout many of the courses. This program is designed to train community members to be first-responders to individuals with mental health needs within their own communities.this training does not license anyone to be a counselor, but it does train individuals to know how to handle natural or man-made situations that affects their community. Upon graduation from the BSHS program the student is awarded a certificate of completion from NBCC-I. Our students will be placed on a registry, maintained by NBCC-I. Students are able to look up their names and verify they are on the registry. We encourage students to be involved in delivering MHF trainings to agencies, churches, schools to saturate our communities with people who understand what is meant to be a Mental Health Facilitator. Human Services Board Certified Practitioner Exam With the current need of skilled professionals in this growing field, human services practitioners may find that being board certification in human services shows their attainment of high standards and a commitment to maintaining their profession position in their field. The independent HS-BCP credential allows human services practitioners to stand out as a part of a distinguished group known for their commitment to the field. Similar types of vignettes used in the actual exam are integrated throughout the BSHS program. Both the course work and vignettes are designed to work together to reinforce the professional knowledge and skills to help prepare the student to take the exam at the end of their program. The exam is not a graduation requirement; it is an option for the student. The cost of the exam is $ and is the responsibility of the student to pay for the exam. The exam must be passed at 75%. Once passed, student will be in an elite society of other professionals who have sat and passed a national board exam. Having HS-BCP on your resume can open additional doors. BSHS Concentrations and Stackable Certificates The learning outcome from each concentration is the same as the stackable certificates. The Stackable Bachelor s programs are designed to be an option for students to earn a certificate en-route to earning a bachelor s degree in the same area of focus as their selected concentration/emphasis. A certificate program may be taken on its own or may be earned en-route to earning a bachelor s degree. Students wishing to earn the certificate en-route must be enrolled in the corresponding "Certificate Track" bachelors program. Check the P&P for specific information. It is important to note, for each certificate, the first four courses are the same, and the last 4 courses are more in depth, in a selected concentration. Also remember Certs work two ways, as an en-route to a BSHS degree and also as a straight certificate, with no degree attached. This option would be for people already working in the field, who want to transition from Addictions to more work in Management (as an example). P&P: Apollo Learning & Professional Development University of Phoenix is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (ncahlc.org) University of Phoenix, Inc.
