Network Functions as-a-service over Virtualised Infrastructures T-NOVA Presenter: Dr. Mamadu Sidibe
Presentation Outline Brief introduction to NFV T-NOVA Facts T-NOVA Consortium T-NOVA Vision T-NOVA objectives T-NOVA Overall Architecture Business Roles and Stakeholders Application Scenario: vhg Areas of Innovation Demonstration and Evaluation 2
Network Function Virtualisation Concept NFV refers to the virtualization of network functions carried out by specialized hardware devices and their migration as software-based appliances, which are deployed on top of commodity IT (including Cloud) infrastructures 3
NFV key benefits Consolidation of hardware resources, leading to reduced equipment investment and maintenance costs (reduction of both CAPEX and OPEX) and power consumption Virtualisation onto COTS platforms also brings OPEX benefits in manageability and integration with the general physical infrastructure. For example proliferating OS and other patch upgrades, managing for energy (power capping), and integration with policies generally Sharing of resources among different network functions and users Up- and down-scaling of resources assigned to each function Rapid introduction of novel network functions (including upgrading of existing ones) at much lower cost and lower risk, leading to significant decrease of Time-To-Market (TTM) for new solutions. New experimental services can coexist in the same infrastructure with production ones. Promotion of innovation, by opening a part of the networking market and transforming it to a novel virtual appliance market, facilitating the involvement of software entrants, including SMEs and even academia 4
Identified NFV Challenges Automated and large-scale deployment of virtualized appliances within an operational infrastructure -implies joint management of IT and networking resources Fault resilience and availability are also critical issues, since the malfunction of a virtual network function may affect the entire network service Compatibility with existing network management infrastructures (including OSS/BSS platforms) enabling a smooth migration path towards a fully virtualised infrastructure Generic and universal as possible, supporting both virtual appliances and underlying hardware assets from different vendors Scalability and performance of NFs is also crucial, since software appliances should achieve performance comparable to their hardware counterparts 5
T-NOVA Facts ICT Call 11 (FP7-ICT ) Objective ICT : Future Networks Project Coordinator: Dr. Anastasios Kourtis (NCSRD) Duration: 36 Months Starting Date: Budget: 10,027,115 EU contribution : 6,743,000 Total PM : 1,035.5 Consortium comprises of 18 partners 6
T-NOVA Consortium 7
T-NOVA Vision Building on top of the emerging concept of Network Function Virtualization (NFV), T-NOVA promotes the NFV concept and introduces a novel enabling framework allowing operators not only to deploy virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) for their own needs but also to offer them to their customers, as valueadded services 8
T-NOVA aims to Design and implement an integrated management architecture, including an Orchestrator platform, for the automated provision, management, monitoring and optimization of Virtualised Network Functions over Network/IT infrastructures Leverage and enhance state-of-the art cloud computing management frameworks for the elastic provision and (re-) allocation of IT resources assigned to the hosting of network functions Exploit and extend Software Defined Networking aspects, focusing on the Openflow technology, for efficient management of network resources, including network slicing, traffic redirection and QoS provision 17/03/2014 9
T-NOVA Overall Architecture Implement all the functionalities of a complete NFVI, as envisaged by ETSI Introduces an innovative Network Function Store, following the paradigm of already successful OS-specific App Stores Establishes a Novel Brokerage Platform, allowing customers to transact with the T-NOVA Service Provider and multiple third-party Function Developers Introduces and promotes a novel Marketplace for VNF s, introducing new business cases and considerably expanding market opportunities by attracting new entrants to the networking market 10
T-NOVA Business Roles 11
Example scenario: virtual Home Gateway Virtualized functions: Media service discovery, delivery, DPI, Transcoding for context-aware service provisioning 12
T-NOVA main areas of innovation (1) T-NOVA Orchestrator Implementation of a federated management of Network and Cloud resources for VNF accommodation. Resource Mapping for VNF deployment VNF Lifecycle management configuration, deployment, operation VNF Monitoring and Optimization Service Chaining Infrastructure Virtualization and Management Resource virtualization, focusing on the workload characterization, the investigation of enhancements and optimizations required for supporting the VNF operation in a performing manner 13
T-NOVA main areas of innovation (2) SDN Control Plane Implementation of a novel OpenFlow based SDN Control Plane, for network management, slicing and QoS provisioning, accompanied by an SDK for SDN control applications development. Resources Abstraction Control Plane Virtualization T-NOVA Function Store Establishment of a common, multi-actor Repository for VNF publication and exchange ( Function Store ) Realization of a Marketplace for NFV Implementation of a set of open tools for the realization of an NFV Marketplace within the T-NOVA architecture offering discovery, trading, configuration, monitoring and billing 14
Demonstration and Evaluation For demonstration and evaluation purposes as well as NF behavior assessment the following VNFs are considered A virtual Session Border Controller (mostly tailored to corporate VPNs and telephony providers) A virtual Security Appliance (mostly tailored to enterprise services/corporate VPNs) A virtual Application Classifier (for enterprise services and also for operator internal use) A virtual media-oriented Home Gateway ( Home-Box, multimedia home gateway) 15
