1 References for DH HTM 01-05: Decontamination in primary care dental practices. Ver 1.0. Introduction. The list of references, provided below, is taken from the notes of the guidance drafting team and is a comprehensive representation of the evidence used in decision-making for both policy direction and detailed guidance content within HTM For references taken from the learned literature the approximate grading attributed to each paper by the drafting team is given. These gradings reflect the systematic method used by the Department of Health in evaluating evidence quality and also give an indication of importance in determining guidance content. The systematic scheme is as below: Level 4: Meta-analyses, systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials, or randomised controlled trials. Multiple laboratory studies reported by peer reviewed article. Level 3: Systematic reviews of case-control or cohort studies, or case-control or cohort studies. High quality laboratory studies or surveys subject to peer review and validation. Level 2: Non-analytic studies, e.g. case reports, case series, learned scientific papers (peer reviewed). Level 1: Expert opinion (in the absence of any of the above). This includes the views and experiences of patients and their carers. The grading system is not applicable to other reference categories such as Acts and Regulations or Codes of Practice. The grade given to individual references is indicated as (L 1 4).
