3 Statement of AOD Program s Goals Assess campus attitudes toward use of alcohol and other drugs Promote campus resources regarding alcohol education, assessment, and assistance o o Educate faculty on how to identify alcohol-/drug- influenced behaviors Communicate alcohol and drug information through learning communities, orientation, and leadership training Identify and assess resources available to entire campus community Maintain standing committee to periodically review policies, procedures, and programming to address the needs of the campus community Establish periodic review of policies and actions needed to serve the campus as well as comply with institutional and federal regulations Maintain good records and procedures Develop program initiatives for responsible, healthy alternatives to alcohol and drug use Promote campus events as an alternative to alcohol choices and advocate responsible use Co-sponsor and/or promote alternative spring break Description of Accomplishments Developed a substance free living environment in the residence hall which promote healthy lifestyle choices and ensures accountability. Continued with the development of BACCHUS (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) Chapter on campus. Administered the Student CORE Survey. Provided programming for Alcohol Awareness Week in October and Alcohol Awareness Month in April. Renewed the Governor s Office of Highway Safety grant Developed Alcohol policy for students 21 and older living in on campus housing Page 3 of 6

4 Description of AOD Program s Elements in the Five Areas of Environmental Interventions 1. Alcohol-Free Options All of Clayton State University s student sponsored social programs are alcohol-free. Such programs include concerts, comedy shows, a range of intramural and other recreational activities, and annual seasonal and special events. A variety of community service and volunteer opportunities are publicized and coordinated for students and student organizations through the Department of Campus Life,. 2. Normative Environment The Office of Counseling and Psychological Services provides confidential screening, individual counseling, and group therapy for students who have questions or concerns about their use of alcohol or other substances. Individual on-line screenings are available year-round. The Office of Counseling and Psychological Services meets with clients that identify alcohol or substance abuse as their primary problem and will make appropriate referrals if necessary. Counseling and psychological services are available to employees through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in the Office of Human Resources. Health promotion and substance abuse programs and services are delivered through a number of departments including Campus Life, Counseling and Psychological Services, Recreation and Wellness, University Health Services, Housing and Residence Life, and the Office of Student Conduct. 3. Alcohol Availability Alcohol is restricted on campus. However, use is limited to special events approved by the president. Clayton State University prohibits the possession or consumption of Alcoholic beverages on the Clayton State University Campus or any area affiliated with Clayton State University is prohibited. Exceptions to the policy of no alcohol on campus may from time to time be permitted at the discretion of the president, and there are other limited exceptions to this policy within the Clayton Station Apartments by those over the age of 21. The number and concentration of alcohol outlets near campus is limited by the City of Morrow and Lake City. 4. Alcohol Marketing and Promotion Pro-health messages are made through the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services, University Health Services, and BACCHUS. Various alcohol education/awareness brochures and pamphlets are available. Annual activities like the Health and Wellness Fair, the National Alcohol Screening Day and National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week provide pertinent information about alcohol use and abuse. Alcohol advertising and industry-sponsored-events are banned on campus. Student organization announcement content related to party events promotion is monitored/restricted. 5. 5 University student organization sponsored (on- and off- campus) functions must be registered through the Office of Campus Life. University police patrol and observe on-campus parties and patrol the on-campus residence hall complex. State and local laws are enforced for fake IDs, underage drinking, purchases for/sale to minors, and DUI. University police collaborate with local law enforcement agencies including the City of Morrow and Lake City Police Departments was created to enhance alcohol education programming, review policy, provide assessments and evaluations. Dissemination of campus-wide brochure will more consistently communicate policies and resources for student, staff, and faculty. Summary of AOD Program s Strengths and Weaknesses Strengths of our program include:. General drug-alcohol assessments and referrals to the Counseling and Psychological Services office can be made through the Student Affairs Division offices and University Health Services. BACCHUS peer education group programming and dissemination of educational materials. A variety of the education materials are available through the Counseling and Psychological Services office and University Health Services. Substance abuse services for Faculty and Staff available through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) administered by Families First. Weaknesses include: Outreach to Faculty and Staff via programming. Lack of student participation in programming efforts o To overcome this weakness, BACCHUS will: Give students and student organizations more ownership of alcohol and other drug programs Connect with Campus Life in sponsoring alcohol and other drug programs AOD Policy Content and Distribution Students: Office of Community Standards Student Code of Conduct Disciplinary Procedures and Sanctions Page 5 of 6
