3 HONORS AND AWARDS ASCE Achievement Awards Colleagues who have contributed to civil engineering through their outstanding leadership, research or substantial career accomplishments merit the accolades of their peers. The Honors and Awards Program of the American Society of Civil Engineers has as its objective the advancement of the engineering profession through the recognition of exceptionally meritorious achievement. ASCE distinguishes these outstanding accomplishments with 80 Society Awards, Distinguished Membership and Outstanding Projects and Leaders. Do you know someone who deserves to be recognized? 4 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS 1852 DISTINGUISHED MEMBERSHIP The highest recognition the Society may confer, second only to the title ASCE President, is that of Distinguished Member (formerly Honorary Member). The Distinguished Membership grade is reserved for members of the Society who have attained the grade of Member or Fellow and who demonstrate acknowledged eminence in some branch of engineering or in its related arts and sciences. Past Presidents of the Society are not eligible for Distinguished Membership. The list of honorees is prestigious and includes engineers of world renown. How to Nominate: Each nomination package must include: 1. The official nominator s cover letter. 2. A Nomination for Distinguished Membership form, located online at Please note that the form requires the signature of a chair, President or other defined leader of a Society organizational entity (the nominator ). Organizational entities are defined in the ASCE Constitution as Committees, Institutes, Academies, Geographic Units, Foundations, Affiliated Societies and other Society units defined by the Board in the Bylaws. 3. A 200-word rationale statement and a brief single-sentence citation attesting to the eminence of the nominee. 4. A one-page summarized biography of the candidate. 5. A minimum of six (maximum of ten) letters of endorsement from individuals with personal knowledge of the nominee s superiority in position, character and achievement. One of these letters must be from the nominator. 6. The candidate s complete biography. Electronic nominations not accepted. 12 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS ASCE PRESENTS THE Outstanding Projects and Leaders Awards The Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) awards are presented at an annual blacktie gala in the spring and offer the profession the opportunity to recognize individual achievement as well as exemplary civil engineering projects. Under this broad umbrella, individuals (leaders) are recognized as lifetime winners in one of five categories: (1) Construction to recognize and honor a civil engineer for innovation and excellence in construction of civil engineering projects and/or programs. (2) Design to recognize and honor a civil engineer for innovation and excellence in civil engineering design. (3) Education to recognize and honor a civil engineer who has demonstrated excellence in advancing civil engineering education. (4) Government to recognize and honor a civil engineer for demonstrated administrative skills leading to the completion of significant public works projects and/or programs. (5) Management to recognize and honor a civil engineer who has demonstrated exceptional management skills in his/her professional career. Send the complete nomination package to the Honors and Awards Program, ASCE Headquarters, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, VA The Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement The Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) is chosen from a field of merit finalists selected by the OCEA jury. The award recognizes the project that best illustrates superior civil engineering skills and represents a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and society. Honoring an overall project, the award recognizes the contributions of many engineers. Civil engineering projects from bridges to tunnels, waterways to railways, and dams to fuel power plants are eligible. A project may be national or international. 13 HONORS AND AWARDS The Charles Pankow Award for Innovation The Charles Pankow Award for Innovation and the Henry L. Michel Award are also awarded at the OPAL gala. The Pankow Award honors innovation and collaboration in the design and construction industry. Nominees must demonstrate innovative design, materials, or construction-related research transferred into practice. All entries must be market-ready and/or commercially viable. Nominations are invited, but not limited to, the following categories: construction and equipment; energy efficiency; environment; information technology systems for design and project management; materials and systems; public works; security engineering; sustainability; and transportation. The Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research Award The Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research honors leaders of the design and construction industry whose vision for the industry has improved the quality of people s lives through research in the design and construction industry. Past contributions can be considered along with the nominee s potential for advancing the industry s future. The nominee may be from the private, academic or government sector.
