3 Why JISC is interested New way of doing things not a new technology - opportunity Efficiencies costs energy Under the UK Climate Change Act 2008, the higher and further education sectors must meet carbon reduction targets of 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050, compared with 1990 levels. Innovation & more effective processes collaboration sharing data & applications; developing collaboratively; scalability. New processes buying services rather than buying hardware Implications legal, skills, procurement, funding models Hype from reality

( Reading, Eduserv) Product modularisation: Cumulus curriculum management in the cloud integrates with local database (Nottingham, Roehampton, Lincoln, DeMontfort, CC Canterbury) breaking down systems free up from monolithic vendor system Unit4 is the supplier of the Student Record System used Legal Toolkit - Security, privacy, data protection, SLAs - 5/JISC-Legal-Cloud-Computing-and-the-Law-Toolkit aspx

8 Janet Brokerage background Universities Modernisation Fund Aim: Promote uptake of hosted data centre and cloud services Why? To create efficiencies and cost savings To improve services and add value How? Create a focused competitive market Remove the hurdles to cloud adoption Advocate good practice

9 Infrastructure cloud framework Cloud infrastructure (IaaS) Predictable billing (monthly per instance) Technical flexibility private / public Expect hybrid to be a popular model Useful for researchers Combined package Co-location needed too, not a pure cloud service Suppliers are keen to pilot

10 Challenges There has been significant interest web visits on 1 st day of launch but Converting interest into adoption is difficult Technology is maturing The business case of cloud versus in house needs to be made clearer Preference for CAPEX ( capital ) over OPEX ( operational/recurrent )

12 JISC Advance Nexus A new service which joins up software applications using and enterprise service bus (ESB) To make processes better, faster and/or cheaper To automate information transfers to external agencies To link local administrative systems to remote services The platform is deployed as a Central ESB joining up the sector; OR It can be deployed as a local ESB to reduce the complexity of your IT configuration. The technology is industrial strength and is used by many household names not least ebay 12

14 Research Data Management Examples ViDaaS - Virtual Infrastructure for Database as a Service- (University of Oxford) an easy to use cloud hosted database management tool DataFlow (University of Oxford) an integrated set of tools to manage data within Life Sciences and other similar research projects to make it easier to submit data for longer-term storage in an appropriate standards compliant data repository Curation & re-use and citation of research data. Transferability, re-use, of the tools products that are sustained.
