Grids, e-business and e-utilities Tony Hey Director of the UK e-science Core Programme EPSRC and DTI

The Grid as an Enabler for Virtual Organisations Ian Foster, Carl Kesselman and Steve Tueke The Grid is a software infrastructure that enables flexible, secure, coordinated resource sharing among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions and resources - includes computational systems and data storage resources and specialized facilities Enabling infrastructure for transient Virtual Organisations

UK e-science Grid Edinburgh Glasgow DL Newcastle Belfast Manchester Oxford Cambridge Cardiff RAL London Hinxton Southampton

IBM : Interview with Irving Wladawsky-Berger (August 2001) Grid computing is a set of research management services that sit on top of the OS to link different systems together We will work with the Globus community to build this layer of software to help share resources All of our systems will be enabled to work with the grid, and all of our middleware will integrate with the software

Timescales for Exploitation? IBM see early adopters of Grid technology coming from pharmaceutical, engineering and petrochemical sectors UK program confirms this picture (AstraZeneca, GSK, Merck, Pfizer, Rolls Royce, BAESystems, Schlumberger) IBM see Grid middleware being adopted by mainstream commerce and industry in 2003/2004 timeframe

HP and Grids The Grid fabric will be soft, dynamic, federated and heterogeneous: Soft share everything, failure tolerant Dynamic resources will constantly come and go, no steady state, ever Federated global structure not owned by any single authority Heterogeneous from supercomputer clusters to P2P PCs John Manley, HP Labs

Grid Computing is one of the three next big things for Sun and our customers Ed Zander, COO Sun The alignment of OGSA with XML Web services is important because it will make Internet-scale, distributed Grid Computing possible Robert Wahbe, General Manager of Web Services, Microsoft

Open Grid Services Architecture Development of web services OGSA will provide Naming /Authorization / Security / Privacy Higher level services: Workflow, Transactions, DataMining,Knowledge Discovery, Exploit Synergy: Commercial Internet with Grid Services

Collaborative Industrial Projects Grid Application Projects have more than 10M industrial input - mostly major pharmaceutical and engineering companies Around 16M allocated for collaborative industrial projects for Grid middleware/tools - at present 14M allocated with matching industrial funding - more than 50 companies involved

Comb-e-Chem Project Video Simulation Properties Diffractometer Analysis Structures Database X-Ray e-lab Properties e-lab Grid

mygrid Project Imminent deluge of genomics data Highly heterogeneous Highly complex and inter-related Convergence of data and literature archives

mygrid Generic Technologies 1. Database access from the Grid 2. Process enactment on the Grid 3. Personalisation services 4. Metadata services 5. Development of Agent Services Grid Services + Ontologies Towards the Semantic Grid

DAME Project In flight data Airline Ground Station Global Network eg: SITA DS&S Engine Health Center Maintenance Centre Internet, , pager Data centre

Geodise Project Engineer GEODISE PORTAL Reliability Security QoS Visualization Ontology for Engineering, Computation, & Optimisation and Design Search Knowledge repository Session database Traceability OPTIMISATION Intelligent Application Manager CAD System CADDS IDEAS ProE CATIA, ICAD APPLICATION SERVICE PROVIDER Analysis CFD FEM CEM Design archive OPTIONS System Licenses and code Optimisation archive Globus, Condor, SRB COMPUTATION Parallel machines Clusters Internet Resource Providers Pay-per-use Intelligent Resource Provider Geodise will provide grid-based seamless access to an intelligent knowledge repository, a state-of-the-art collection of optimisation and search tools, industrial strength analysis codes, and distributed computing & data resources

E-Science Centre Projects Example Industrial Projects: E-Science Portal (with Sun) OSCAR-G (with Intel and Compusys) Tele-Medicine (with Siemens, Cancer Trust and Regional Hospitals) Molecular Informatics (with Unilever) GRIDmist (with HP) Grid Data Services (with IBM,Oracle)

Databases in the Grid Data Complexity Computational Complexity

OGSA Data Access and Integration Project - Key middleware area for UK Program - Develop high-quality data-centric middleware capability - Total Budget $5M (CP $2M) - Three Centres: Edinburgh, Manchester and Newcastle - Industrial partners: IBM US, IBM Hursley and Oracle UK.
