2 Tourism in the Province of Milan tourist flows 2008 compared TOURIST FLOWS IN THE LOMBARDY PROVINCES PER TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION This analysis was devised in order to provide an overview of Tourism in our area. The data looked at refers to 2008 and should be considered temporary because ISTAT, holder of the survey, has yet to make it official. The survey looked at is twofold: the guest movement in accommodation, hotels and non-hotel accommodation, and the annual capacity of accommodation structures. The survey of flows is carried out using a particular module that complies with ISTAT parameters that value a subdivision of Italian guests (per region) and foreign ones (per country of residence). The Province of Milan plays an intermediary role in the data collection, between the accommodation structures and the Lombardy Region Statistics Office; with this and other provinces in Lombardy, a new programme for the insertion of NEWTOURISM data has been developed. Even in Milan Hotels it holds first place, followed by Brescia and Varese; the situation changes, however, in the non-hotel accommodation sector where Brescia has a clear lead over the other provinces with 51% of Arrivals and 59% of Presences, followed by Como and Sondrio (Milan has only 6% arrivals and 7% presences). 14 In the provincial area, the hotels that record an increased flow of tourists, both Italian and foreign, are top grade ones 5 and 4 star, followed by 3 star. This trend is also confirmed in the city of Milan. Foreign tourists visiting the province also seem to appreciate residences, as opposed to other non-hotel structures, which come 5 th in the range of choice, after 2 star hotels. In the city, on the other hand, foreigners in particular create the opposite trend, favouring nonhotel accommodation, compared to residences. The PM shows high levels especially for residences (because of the nature of the accommodation itself) and for non-hotel accommodation (PM tot., overall 8.5 days in the province and 6 in the city). 17 MAIN POINT OF ORIGIN FOREIGN AND ITALIAN TO MILAN AND PROVINCE The 2008 data regarding where tourists arriving in Milan and its province come from, shows how the main arrival basins of Italians are Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto. As regards foreigners, it is interesting to note how France, that is one of the main (in second place after Germany) basins for those coming to the Province, is in sixth place for the city of Milan. In the same way Japan and the USA, respectively in first and third place in the city, are in fifth and eight place in the provincial area. Lastly, Romania proves an interesting data for the province of Milan although it is of no significance in the city. Most of what is on offer is represented by the hotel category 68% (Hotels and Residences) while the rest, made up of non-hotel accommodation, is 32% (room rental, B&B, Campsites, Houses and holiday apartments, holiday homes, hostels). Strutture Ricettive Provincia di Milano 2008 Extraalberghiero 32% Alberghiero 68% Accommodation in the province of Milan Non-hotel accommodation 32% Hotels 68% 21
21 Comparing the composition of hotel accommodation in Milan and its Province, in the distribution of accommodation structures we can see that the 4 and 3 star categories are the most numerous with 53% in the capital and 69% in the Province Composizione Strutture Alberghiere Milano Provincia Alberghi 5 stelle e 5 stelle lusso Alberghi 4 stelle Alberghi 3 stelle Alberghi 2 stelle Alberghi 1 stella Residenze turistico alberghiere 2008 Composition of Hotels Milan Province 5 star and 5 star deluxe 4 star.. 3star 2 star.. 1star Tourist hotel residences 22
22 A different picture is portrayed as far as non-hotel accommodation is concerned: Milan has the highest number of room rentals, while the number of B&Bs in the Province is significant Composizione Strutture Extra -alberghiere Campeggi 1 1 Milano Ostelli della gioventù Bed & Breakfast 2008 Composition of Non-hotel accommodation Milan Province Camping Rentals managed as a business Youth hostels. 24 If we compare the hotel composition both in the capital and Province in 2008 with the two previous years, there are no significant changes, in fact the data shows how the other categories are predominant elements. 25 The non-hotel accommodation sector in 2007 and 2006 showed no significant changes, although we did notice how the B&B phenomenon starts to increase slightly both in Milan and its Province and then takes off in Composizione Strutture Extra-albeghiere 2007/ MILANO 2007 MILANO 2006 PROVINCIA 2007 PROVINCIA 2006 Campeggi Ostelli Bed and Breakfast Alloggi in affitto gestiti in forma imprenditoriale Case_ferie Composition of non- hotel accommodation in 2007/2006 Milan Camping Rentals managed as a business Hostels.
