1 Future Plans of the Class of 2013 Results from the MSMC Graduation Survey Background At the MSMC spring graduation ceremonies, students completed a short survey about their future education and employment plans. A total of 126 graduate students and 415 undergraduate students completed the survey. This report focuses on the responses from undergraduate students. Information about the graduate students has been compiled in a separate report, available from Institutional Planning & Research (IPR) upon request. Undergraduate Participants A total of 623 undergraduates were eligible for graduation; the response rate for undergraduates was 67%. The largest number were majors, followed by students in Psychology, Business, Sociology and Liberal Arts. 2 Key Findings Post-Graduation Plans When asked about their plans for the next six months, 60% of respondents indicated that they intend to work fulltime, and 30% plan to pursue further studies at the graduate level. Specific plans for students in each program are reported below. The vast majority of those in the nursing programs plan to work full-time within six months of graduating (81% of the recipients and 91% of BSN recipients). Among non-nursing graduates from the traditional baccalaureate program, over 46% plan to attend graduate school. Table 3: What is your main plan for the next six months? The question allowed for multiple responses ( check all that apply ), so percentages do not sum to 100%. Most baccalaureate degree recipients plan to pursue a master s degree next (77% of students, 58% of traditional baccalaureate non-nursing students, and 72% of Weekend College students). In addition, 17% of Traditional students plan to go straight on to pursue a doctoral or other professional degree (including Medical or Juris Doctoral degrees). 3 While many students plan to pursue higher degrees, they vary considerably in terms of when they intend to do so. Most of those from the traditional,, and Weekend College programs plan to pursue higher degrees immediately (in Fall 2013). Students who earned a non-nursing baccalaureate degree are split; roughly a quarter plan to pursue a higher degree in Fall 2013 and a third plan to purse a higher degree in Fall Further, almost 55% of students plan to pursue a higher degree later than Fall Table 5: What is your planned start date? 4 Employment Current Employment Almost 60% of all the undergraduate participants were working at the time of their graduation. However, patterns of employment vary greatly by academic program. The Weekend College and programs are designed for working adults, so it is not surprising that most graduates from these programs were already employed. Table 8: Are you currently employed? 5 The following table identifies the industries in which respondents were employed at the time of the survey. The majority were employed in healthcare, business, and administrative support positions. Over 36% of the traditional and weekend college baccalaureate respondents indicated that they had secured employment. Among the participants, approximately 38% had secured future employment. 6 Of 124 respondents who had secured future employment, 82% indicated that their future employment is related to their major at MSMC. Even higher proportions of students in some programs had found employment related to their major 100% of and 85% of Weekend College students.
