1 Glossary of Kansas and Related Library Terms ACCESSKANSAS An information service of INK. Includes information about living in Kansas, including online services, operating a business, recreation and travel, Kansas government, and Kansas facts and history. ALA American Library Association, founded in 1876 by Melvil Dewey. The world s oldest and largest library association. ALEX An online database linked to the Job Service Centers nationally. Thirty-three Kansas libraries received computers and software to access ALEX, through a grant from Kansas Department of Human Resources (KDHR). In addition to job listings, ALEX libraries offer simulated interviews and resume maker. BPH See Talking Books Service. BCR Bibliographic Center for Research, Colorado. Our regional service provider of OCLC services, including training and billing. Also discounts on computer equipment, CD- ROMS, etc. Blue Skyways The Kansas State Library web server. Housed at the KU Med Center, and funded by the Kansas Library Network Board, Blue Skyways provides resources for the Kansas library community, including an directory, a merged community information database, and continuing education opportunities. Also links to the Kansas Library Catalog (KLC) Online from Auto-Graphics. CKLS Central Kansas Library System. One of the seven regional library systems in Kansas. Based in Great Bend. CODDL Council of Deans and Directors of Libraries; a group of the library directors of State colleges and universities (Kansas Board of Regents schools). CULS College and University Library Section. One of the sections of KLA.
2 DISC Division of Information Services and Communications. The state agency which provides telecommunications and Internet services for other state agencies. The provider of 800 service to INK. E-RATE A fund set aside by the government to provide discounts on telecommunication services to eligible libraries, schools, and rural health care providers. Electronic Mailing List E.g. Kanlib-l and Nekls-l. An list process that sends library related messages between the list subscribers. Formerly known as Listserv a copyrighted term. ILDP Interlibrary Loan Development Program. Provided competitive and non-competitive resource grants for materials purchase. ILL Interlibrary Loan. INK The Information Network of Kansas (INK) was created by an act of the Kansas State Legislature in 1990 for the purpose of providing equal electronic access to state, county, local and other public information to the people of Kansas. INK provides Kansans equal access to governmental data via the Internet. ISP Internet Service Provider. KAECT Kansas Association for Educational Communications and Technology. One of three professional statewide associations which cosponsors an annual conference. KAN-ED A project assigned to the Kansas Board of Regents in 2001 to create the Kansas information highway for schools, libraries, and hospitals. The project is guided by a twelve person User Advisory Council. KANFAX Established telefacsimile network which facilitates interlibrary loan within the state of time-sensitive materials. Membership agreement required to join KANFAX, but not required to be included in directory.
3 KANFIND Online Database Service sponsored by the Kansas State Library, Kansas Regents Libraries, the Johnson County Library, the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, and Olathe Public Library. KANREN Kansas Research and Education Network. Provides dedicated Internet access training for members at monthly rates. Based at KU. Includes universities, colleges, and school districts. KASL Kansas Association of School Librarians. One of three professional state groups which cosponsors an annual conference. KCMLIN Kansas City Metropolitan Library & Information Network. A multi-type library consortium serving 48 library systems on both sides of the Missouri/Kansas state line with the main office located in Independence, Missouri. KICIN The Kansas Integrated Commercialization Information Network. KICIN provides interactive, user-friendly, one-stop shopping and information exchange for economic development resources. KICIN is designed by the KTEC Partnership to distribute information on the available economic development opportunities to Kansas businesses and residents. KICNET Kansas Interlibrary Circuit Network. Facilitates the Interlibrary Loan service in Kansas. KIC Council Body responsible for establishing statewide ILL policies and protocols. Membership consists of representatives from libraries signing membership agreement. Elects governing board representative of different types of libraries. KILBD Kansas Interlibrary Loan Board of Directors. Governing board of KIC Council; consists of representatives of different types of libraries. Examines issues related to ILL policies and procedures; brings matters requiring a statewide decision before KIC Council. KILD Kansas Interlibrary Loan Directory. An electronic compilation of interlibrary loan policies detailing contact persons, addresses, lending periods, material types and fees. Available on Blue Skyways.
4 KILR Kansas Interlibrary Loan Roundtable. A roundtable group of KLA dealing with interlibrary loan issues. KLA Kansas Library Association. The state professional organization that hosts an annual spring conference in conjunction with KASL and KAECT. KLC Kansas Library Catalog. Available online through Blue Skyways. Approximately 9 million holdings records of 750 libraries. KLNB Kansas Library Network Board. The research and development arm of the state library. Promotes and encourages interlibrary cooperation and resource sharing among all types of libraries. KLOA Kansas Library Operations Associates. A roundtable of KLA. Membership organization for library support staff within Kansas. KLS Kansas List of Serials. Included in the KLC, provides holdings for journals in Kansas; 132 libraries. KPLACE Formerly, a training institute for librarians who do not have an MLS degree. Completion of the program includes participation in three consecutive annual institutes (KPLACE I, II and III). A separate program for KPLACE graduates (KPLACE IV) is also provided. KSL Kansas State Library. Composed of six divisions: Talking Books Service (TBS), Administration, KLNB, Library Development (LD), Library Information Technology (LIT), and Reference. KSLC Any Kansas resident can register for a new Kansas Library Card (KSLC) in person at any participating library or school media center. The card is issued to each patron with a unique personal identification number (PIN). With this PIN and date of birth, the patron can log in to selected databases from any Web-enabled computer at any time of the day or night. LC or LOC Library of Congress. Refers to both the institution and to the cataloging method.
5 LEEP Library Employee Education Plan, formerly the statewide continuing education program for librarians, library staff and library trustees. LSTA Library Services and Technology Act. Provides matching funds from the federal government for local and statewide library projects. LSTA Advisory Council Group that advises and approves the LSTA Long Range Plan and the LSTA Annual Program; also participates in awarding LSTA grants. MARC Machine Readable Cataloging; bibliographic description encoded for computer processing used by library automation systems. MLS Master of Library Science, the graduate degree from a library school. MPLA Mountain Plains Library Association, a regional professional organization. NCKLS North Central Kansas Library System. One of seven regional library systems in the state. Based in Manhattan. NEKLS Northeast Kansas Library System. One of seven regional library systems in the state. Based in Lawrence. NWKLS North West Kansas Library System. One of seven regional library systems in the state. Based in Norton. SCKLS South Central Kansas Library System. One of seven regional library systems in the state. Based in Hutchinson. SEKLS South East Kansas Library System. One of seven regional library systems in the state. Based in Iola. SLAC Kansas State Library Advisory Commission. The governing group of the state library. Meets quarterly; members appointed by governor. Responsible for appropriating LSCA and other grant moneys.
6 SLIM School of Library Science and Information Management, Emporia State University. SWKLS South West Kansas Library System. One of seven regional library systems in the state. Based in Dodge City. Talking Books Service (TBS) One of the divisions of the state library, supplemented by six sub regional offices and two consultants. (Formerly known as Blind and Physically Handicapped.) The state library is a regional library for the National Library for the Blind (Library of Congress). Provides services to those with visual or physical handicaps, especially the Talking Books Service, Braille materials and large print. Urban Public Libraries Includes Topeka and Shawnee County, Wichita, Kansas City, Kansas, Johnson County.
