2 Development and Validation of a Work Text in Science, Technology, and Society Mary Corinne R. Selga The study focused on the development and validation of a work text in Science, Technology, and Society in terms of the availability, adequacy of instructional materials, needed topics in the course; and the level of validity of the tasks and activities. The descriptive method of research was used. The average ratings of all the validators implied that the work text contributes to the achievement of specific objectives of the subject, provides for the development of higher cognitive skills, is well-organized and well-designed, and was suitable to the vocabulary level and ability of the students. Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that (1) the development of a work text in Science, Technology, and Society that will enhance the performance of nursing students and suit their level of understanding is needed; and (2) that the developed work text is valid. Keywords: work text, science, technology, society, instructional materials
3 Project-Based Learning in College Chemistry Frederick G. Tadifa This study utilized Project-Based Learning as a methodological approach to learning. It determined the performance of the students on several measures and examined the significant difference between the scores of the two groups. The study used descriptive-experimental method of research. Pre-test, posttest, chapter test, rubric-assessed outputs, and expert opinion were used to assess the respondents performance. The findings of the study showed significant improvement on the performance of the two groups in their posttest, chapter test, and in their outputs. The experimental group, however, performed better than the control group in the different performance measure. This implies that Project-Based Learning is an effective approach in the teaching and learning of Chemistry. Keywords: project-based learning, chemistry, performance measure
4 Techno-Science Literacy Profile of Secondary School Science Teachers in the City of San Fernando (La Union) Maritess B. Enriquez The study determined the techno-science literacy profile of 14 private and five (5) public secondary school science teachers in San Fernando, La Union. The study used descriptive method. To quantify the data from the field, frequency counts, percentages, and percentile ranks were employed. The study found out that the teacher s personal and professional profile do not affect the performance of teachers on the scientific and technological literacy test (STLT). Likewise, while the public school teachers are left behind by their counterparts in the private schools in terms of their scientific and technological alignment, the school type does not affect the performance of teachers in the scientific and technological literacy test. Generally, the teachers performance on the STLT is moderately average; hence, the secondary school science teachers should attend training programs. Keywords: techno-science literacy, training programs, secondary schools, science teachers
5 Selected Laboratory Activities in Biology Using Community Resources and Indigenous Materials Eden Joy M. Obaldo This study employed the descriptive design to gather information concerning the profiles of the teacher-respondents and the school; the availability and extent of utilization of the identified community resources and indigenous materials or products in teaching selected topics in Biology as inputs in preparing selected activities/laboratory manual appropriate for second year high school students. The assessment showed that the availability of the indigenous materials and products in the community of the public high schools in the second congressional district in the Division of La Union are much available. However, the extent of utilization of community resources and indigenous materials in teaching selected topics in Biology is moderately utilized. Furthermore, the degree of needs of teachers on the use of community resources and indigenous materials in teaching Biology in all the given instructional materials are very much needed. Given this result, selected laboratory manual/activities were prepared to expose the learners to a more meaningful and experiential learning situations. Keywords: laboratory activities, biology, community resources, indigenous materials, experiential learning
