13 Are any of your employees NWTC graduates of this program? Yes 6 No Not Sure What specific factors led to your decision to either hire or not hire a graduate from NWTC in the past? This tech did some clinicals in our organization so we were able to see the potential based on the above attributes. We have hired and not hired based on their clinical rotation through our facility. We watch the students carefully during their clinical rotation. We look for team players who aren't afraid to step into a new procedure, work well with the other members of the team, and display a solid work ethic (on time, every time). I do not do the hiring for these employees...only clinical placement. They seemed prepared and knowledgeable. Surgical Technologist Program Employer Survey Results

21 How could the Surgical Technologist program be modified to better prepare students for a career in this field? My experience with the program has been excellent - we are always looking for candidates whose interpersonal and technology skills stand out. Unsure No suggestions Increase knowledge of the sterilization process. No comment Employees would like more specific "hands-on training. Provide more education on background of procedures. Surgical Technologist Program Employer Survey Results

22 What are challenges impacting this field? The number of surgeries is declining - due both to better and more available preventative care, and people's inability to afford surgery with a high deductible. More and more types of technology to learn and stay up-to-date on changes. Many of the new graduates are only getting part time jobs which makes it more difficult for them to keep up all their skills. Some hospitals are requiring certifications and CE credits which can be difficult and expensive to obtain. Hospitals frequently do not reimburse for this. Turnover Surgical Technologist Program Employer Survey Results

23 Looking toward the future where do you see this field heading? More involvement with first assisting surgeons, more involvement with equipment/inventory control, sterile processing. It will always be a necessary role, but the number of staff required will probably continue to decline. I see an increasing need for technologists--they probably will have to become more specialized. All hospitals requiring certified STs. Surgical Technologist Program Employer Survey Results

I loved my teachers. Terry and Bunny did an amazing job! Online: Better learning in person, Medical Terminology class should not be offered as an online course... Infection control online was the most difficult to follow, text book was not the best. Should have been in the classroom for this course. I like hands-on. 40 Looking toward the future where do you see this field heading? This field is continuing to grow and in the future I see many colleges just having a Certified First assist program. I think it will be flooded for this area. More and more responsibilities being added. Laparoscopic and robots... Not sure, might go to a different field. Two year program. 41 What did you take away from your program that you use on the job? Everything (2 Responses) I'm not currently working as a CST. Everything! Every single thing, even things I thought were 'silly' or unnecessary... I use everything, everyday. I am currently finishing my RN degree at NWTC, I took away from this program sterile technique and surgical back ground to apply in my current schooling. 52 In Person Online How satisfied were you with the different instructional modes? (Comments from Respondents) Questions are answered immediately and any assistance is readily available. In Person class is really good. After tests are taken, they cannot be reviewed for studying. Plus it takes longer for question to be answered since the instructor needs to be online to answer them. Constant technical issues and instructors with limited computer skills make online courses frustrating and counteract the convenience an online learning setting typically provides. I can't learn from online classes. I can t do online classes. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

53 Blended How satisfied were you with the different instructional modes? (Comments from Respondents) I haven't experienced a blended course yet. It was a little dragging to go over PowerPoints in class once a week when we were supposed to do it on our own. Accelerated Material is given accurately and efficiently, but it is questionable if I am retaining the information. Video Conference It is nice, because you are able to talk to the instructor, but it is also difficult if they have to leave and are not available after class. 54 7 How well did the Program Orientation/Welcome Week prepare you for your classes? % % 3 1 Very Prepared Somewhat Prepared 3.23% 3.23% Not at All Prepared Did Not Attend Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

55 Why or why not? Please explain: We were told that it would be accelerated, but when classes started, it became much more accelerated than anticipated. The program-specific portion of welcome week was very informative and useful in preparing to enter my program. The initial portion that emphasized basic skills like time management, prioritizing, study methods was redundant from the now required College 101 course and a frustrating expenditure of valuable time for students who are not new to college life. The welcome week prepared me for my first day of my program, because I got all my paperwork that showed my requirements and due dates. I knew what to expect when I came in for class. Welcome week was a good thing to have, but it was really long. I could tell that some people were zoning out due to it being 8 hours of syllabus. There was a lot of information to process in one day. Talked to us about what and how we would learn in the program, but not daily course load. Over all I had a general idea what it was going to be like, but there are still a few things I wasn't expecting. It was a lot of information for one day. The welcome week didn't benefit me as I already had a degree. Explained exactly how the flow of the program was going to be. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

62 Financial Aid (Comments from Respondents) I've experienced repeated problems with student loan deferment paperwork. There is only one person in charge of processing these requests and she has blatantly stated to me in the past that she's not really sure how it all works. The last time I had a deferment form that needed to be completed, she signed a blank form and told me to fill the rest of the information out myself because she didn't know what needed to be recorded. I only had to pay $200 out of about $3,000, but when I went into myfinacials.com it was listing the original price without the financial aid and then the one with the financial aid. When I went to pay for my tuition it still had the original payment of $3,000 as what I had to pay and I couldn't get an answer of why from my advisor and when I called Financial Aid Services nobody picked up so I just paid the $200. It has to many steps to get the financial aid and I don't know everything that I need to do to get my financial aid. Then in my NWTC it tells me I don't need to do anything for my financial aid yet I did not receive the aid. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

63 Financial Aid (Comments from Respondents) Even though I met them with them several times, they failed to help correctly budget for the course. They did not tell me that I will receive very little financial aid for the summer/fall courses. Summer financial aid was not clarified that we would get a considerable amount less than normal. I had to take out a bank loan to finish school because of this. Very hard to figure out where you need to pay back to and also return of extra financial aid was confusing. Summer aid was a joke. I hope to get more for fall to make up for my summer finances. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

Personal study groups Accommodations Career services, library Being able to call/ our teachers really help. 73 What do you like about your selected program? The accelerated courses to complete the program. Program instructors have been given flexibility to restructure the courses outside the normal template to accelerate and improve the learning process for students. It is very interesting. The teachers and hands-on work. Good program The lab, how hands-on it is every day. I like the teachers, and how the program is set up. Its right to the point. Very interesting. Not boring, interesting. Team oriented environment, fun instructors, instructors are always there to help. I like how hands-on and interactive it is. 74 What do you like about your selected program? Fun stuff. That it is a highly accredited program. I like how it challenges me and that I love going to school everyday. Hands-on It gives me an opportunity to grow in the advancing medical field. The material will help me prepare for a career in my field after school is finished. Hands-on, clinical is awesome. Pretty much everything. You are always learning and it is very challenging. That this is what I want to do for my career. You may be doing the same surgery's but every person is different. The opportunity to be in the O.R. The classroom. The hands-on. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

75 What changes would you recommend be made to your selected program? Nothing so far. We shouldn't start learning new materials when we still haven't been tested on the old material. More through explanation of things. None. So far I've been very happy. More time spent on instruments. I would not make any changes. Better review for tests. That classes are not so long or not every day of the week. I wouldn't change anything. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

76 What changes would you recommend be made to your selected program? Shadow first through the program to actually see what goes on, more practice on draping other body parts. I suggested to one/two of the teachers that they should have some of the senior students/alumni come in to the freshmen class and answer questions for the students so you have a better idea what the O.R. is really like. I think that would be really helpful. I think it should be a two year program so it doesn't feel so fast and overwhelming. Maybe student shadow. 2 year program to make it spread out more. Make the program a little longer so we re not as stressed. Having the correct due dates for assignments. Better orientation about what it is actually like in the O.R. The blended course was kind of rough. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

77 Why is NWTC the right choice for you? It has very good instructors and prepares you for your career. Location. Nearest similar program is in Fond Du Lac. The work is easily manageable and I can still go to school and have a job at the same time. Gets me out into the job field quicker. Very casual environment Because it had the surgical tech program which a lot of schools don't offer. My program is really put together well. It is the closest school to my home that offers this program. Inexpensive, offers the program I want, close to home. Small class room environment and the teachers want us to be successful. Because it works well with my work schedule. It s the only campus that offered the ST program within 50 miles of my home. Yes, it has helped me become the person I am today. Cheaper, closer to home. Between my EMT class and this program I have always enjoyed my association with any class/department within NWTC. Close to home and affordable. It is a tech school that was good for myself having a family. Good school. It is convenient and close to home. Surgical Technologist Program-Student Survey Results

The instructors are some of the most invested I've encountered in recent years- very attentive and willing to help their students. Sets up for great success. Great teachers Fun and interesting (2 Responses) Its fun If you like surgery and teamwork this is for you but need to be able to handle stress well. Unless it's something you really want, don't invest your time and money. The hands-on was very helpful and the material was easy to follow along with.
