2 Surgical education means more than providing ongoing technical support from the first cut to the last stitch. In today s resource-conscious healthcare environment, it means delivering a flexible and cost-effective curriculum that challenges and supports surgeons to realize their potential, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. This is made possible by the state of the art facilities housed in a single J&J location, from high-tech lecture rooms to wet or dry labs to highly sophisticated Virtual Reality (VR) training simulators, the overall surgical experience is as realistic as possible. Underpinning access to the latest teaching technology is a deep scientific understanding how surgeons learn most efficiently, which means combining different training methods, such as mental training in surgery, visualization techniques and practical hands-on training. Tell us what you need and we will create YOUR solution.

4 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Learning Pathway A Complete Learning Pathway One of the most valued resources that we can offer Health Care Professionals is access to internationally respected Professional that advances surgery and improves patient outcomes at every stage of their training. That is why Johnson & Johnson has developed a program of specialized professional training modalities that are designed to follow the surgical training continuum. This program is flexible across all surgical areas and can be adapted and tailored according to the physicians particular needs, depending on where they are on their training pathway. Training courses offered here relate to different steps of this pathway. CME Accreditation The Continuing Medical system (CME) aims to ensure a high level of theoretical and clinical competence throughout the working life of a medical specialist. Many of our training courses are accredited by local medical councils.

5 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Learning Pathway Discovering new surgical technology and techniques by accessing online educational learning modalities: procedure videos, e-learning modules, webinars and more.

10 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Training Approaches and Methods Training from doctors/surgeons for doctors/surgeons Whether in the lecture rooms, dry labs or wet labs, our training facilities at the ESI are dedicated to advancing the theoretical and practical application of innovative surgical skills and knowledge. Our internationally renowned and highly experienced faculty, skilled surgeons in their own right, lead the courses from start to finish and ensure learning success irrespective of a surgeon s career stage. The faculty is supported by our Medical Training Team, specialists with profound training expertise and experience. All our training courses follow what is termed the `ARC approach which stands for `Access-Repair-Closure, an approach closely matching the appropriate clinical treatment pathway for any particular procedure. Our concept is to offer the best training opportunities tailored to your individual needs: combine any of the different course components listed below to create your individual training solution: Theory session Dry lab training Wet lab training VR lab training Live broadcast Mental training Operation Primer

11 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Theory session The theory sessions are led by our faculty surgeons and can be done separately in a lecture room or can be integrated directly into the hands-on training sessions in our dry and wet labs. These interactive sessions provide the necessary theoretical background by actively involving the participants through questions and discussions ensuring optimal training efficiency. 12 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Dry lab training During our dry lab sessions participants train surgical skills on foam or organ models. The Pulsating Organ Perfusion Trainer (POP) simulates the circulation of blood flow through tissue creating an even more realistic training experience. Additional opportunities like the Herniabox and the Tuebing Trainer are also available and ready to use. Organ models, specifically prepared for each surgical specialty, offer the opportunity to learn and train: handling of surgical instruments and energy devices, camera positioning, vessel preparation, mobilization techniques, suturing and clipping, surgical procedures. The ESI Medical Training team supports the faculty during the Dry Lab session with profound product knowledge, teaching expertise and experience. Dry Labs are equipped with Karl Storz: cameras, optics, light sources, insufflators, HF-surgery, AIDA digital data archiving, Wide-View -HD-Monitors, SCB 3D-Tower. 13 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Wet lab training We have three fully equipped wet labs, where we are able to offer a realistic operating experience with live tissue training on animate models. Our OR-team includes veterinarians, medical trainers and vet technicians and ensures a flawless OR setting and training execution. Wet Labs are equipped with Karl Storz: cameras, optics, light sources, insufflators, HF-surgery, AIDA digital data archiving, Wide-View -HD-Monitors, SCB 3D-Tower as well as Dräger: Primus anesthesia system and Trilux: Aurinio OR-LED-lights. 14 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types VR lab training Our highly sophisticated Virtual Reality (VR) Training simulators offer the possibility to train minimally invasive basic skills, such as tissue management, camera positioning and instrument use, as well as training of complex surgical procedures. The virtual anatomical environment allows for individual training at various skills levels. The advantages of the virtual laparoscopic simulation concept include its user-centered nature, ability to repeat exercises and surgical procedures unlimited times and the direct, objective feedback provided in the form of metrics on operating time, efficiency of movements and errors. This technology can be used for training purposes by beginners, as well as surgeons at all levels of training who desire an efficient and reliable way to improve and consolidate their skills and knowledge in a particular area while ensuring patient safety. Existing training modules include basic skills training, procedural skills training, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, gastric bypass, incisional hernia repair, sigmoidectomy, GYN training. 15 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Live surgery broadcast An integral part of surgical training is to watch specialists perform complex procedures. Live or pre-recorded surgery broadcasts can be an effective educational tool, especially for new and highly advanced procedures, educating multiple trainees and offering the additional benefit of expert commentary. Our services enable high-quality surgery broadcasts as an optional course component. Theory session Dry lab training Wet lab training VR lab training Live broadcast Mental training Operation Primer

16 Basic Principles Learning Pathway Training Methods AND Approaches Course Types Mental training in surgery Mental training is well established in sports, music and pilot training with demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing performance and reducing stress. In Mental Training in Surgery the surgeon visualizes the operation from an inner perspective without performing any actual movements, i.e. he goes through the so called nodal points, of an operation step by step in his mind s eye. Scientific studies have proven that the combination of mental and practical training in surgery helps the surgeon to learn a new operation procedure more efficiently. Mental training benefits for laparoscopic training were first demonstrated by psychologist Marc Immneroth et al. reporting in 2007 a large randomised quantitative study on cholecystectomy training. Mental training is a powerful enhancement tool for laparoscopic skills acquisition and improves patient safety through automation of surgical procedures, creation of mental capacity and the reduction of stress potentials. Moreover they are a basis for a new training method which combines mental and practical training in surgery. The concept of the Operation Primer originated in a scientific study with the title»mental Training in Surgical «that formed part of a collaborative project between the surgical departments of the University of Cologne, the Institute of Sports and Sports Science of the University of Heidelberg, and the European Surgical Institute (ESI) in Norderstedt. In the Operation Primer, the steps of complicated and complex surgical techniques are described with the intuition to help the surgeon and his team perform an operation safely and economically.
