3 BP Global Overview BP is divided into three main business segments: Exploration and Production - exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas Refining and Marketing - refining, marketing, supply and transportation; and the manufacture and marketing of petrochemicals Gas, Power and Renewables growing presence in gas and power and in solar power generation

4 Group-wide Incident Reporting System Assessment of current state began in November, 1999 Over 20 major heritage HSE systems across two major corporations 4 systems most widely used Legacy systems reviewed against objective criteria: Web interface Robust database platform, e.g. Oracle

5 Group wide Incident Reporting System The charge rework an existing application to a fit for purpose system that was capable of managing all HSSE incidents and resultant action item tracking in BP Group Arrive at a single application to replace existing legacy systems and provide data accessibility across the globe Build on a platform which would provide for future growth

9 Flexibility & User Acceptance Each business unit could customize all data screens Define organizational structure and locations (+ 3 Levels) 394 data fields (33 mandatory globally) 5 custom checkboxes, 5 custom text, 5 radio button, 5 drop down lists Drop-down lists used to enforce data integrity (89:25) Multiple languages rules for incident notification

14 What went well We have standardized around a single application Common language and terminology Allows for benchmarking and line of sight across businesses Creates less work can go to a single application at the organizational level you require (Group down to gas station) Eliminates organizations cascading reports

15 What went well Validity of data can have users and auditors from different parts of the company using the data Reports Power users share development Used to produce externally facing reports Automated reports Supporting a single application from digital business Developing competency in the organization with use of single application

17 Opportunities for improvement Do these first: If re-working an existing application, complete a technical review of the existing application against vision to determine Is the technology the latest? And most efficient? Test application across existing network and IT architecture

18 Testing the application Develop test script to simulate simultaneous usage task scenarios to simulate realistic field activity, e.g. data entry and reports heaviest hour of heaviest day, e.g. month end reports across globe while others are entering data Or invest in software to simulate multiple users Purpose - make realistic estimates of the desired performance and scalability Applications that work well in a single server environment with a hundred users do not always scale up to an enterprise-wide application
