2 Methodology The Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association (OOHNA) commissioned Matrix Research Limited, Toronto, Ontario, to conduct an online survey of their members, February The 2012 OOHNA Salary Survey was completed April In total, 392 members completed the survey, including 283 full-time employees and 109 part-time employees. Salary By Level - Full-Time Salaries have increased across the board for full-time OHNs, with Level 5 OHNs seeing the largest increase from a median income of $80,000 in 2009 to a median income of $89,996 in Level 4 full-time OHNs have seen the smallest increase, from $80,000 to $84,500. Salary By Level - Part-Time Level 3 part-time OHNs saw the largest decrease in median income, dropping from $54,813 in 2009 to $45,856 in Level 5 part-time salaries also decreased significantly. Meanwhile, Level 4 part-time OHNs saw the largest salary increase, from $44,304 in 2009 to $52,397 in Level 1's and 2's saw small salary increases. 5 Q1. Salary By Size of Organization Full-time OHNs saw their median incomes increase between 2009 and 2012 in all organizations except for the smallest category (1 to 250 employees). Those working in organizations with between 251 and 500 employees saw the largest increase in median income, going from $75,000 in 2009 to $82,819 in Part-time OHNs only saw increased median incomes at organizations of 251 to 500 employees and 1001 to 2000 employees. Parttime salaries decreased significantly at large organizations (2001 to 500 employees, and employees), and decreased slightly at organizations between 501 to 1000 employees. At small organizations of 1 to 250 employees, part-time salaries remained about the same. Salary By Industry Full-time OHNs working in the Food/Beverage and Utilities industries saw the highest salary increase of all industries for which there is data from Construction and Registry/Agency industries saw the greatest decrease in median full-time income. For part-time OHNs, median incomes increased in the Construction, Education, and Utility industries. For all other industries median incomes decreased, except Manufacturing which did not change. Food/Beverage and Transportation salaries decreased most significantly. 10 Q2. Hours worked per week Full-Time The standard work week for full-time OHNs (41%) is 37.5 hours. About a quarter of full-time OHN's work 35 hours per week (23%) another quarter work 40 hours per week (24%). A small percentage (12%) of full-time OHN's work more than 40 hours per week. Employer Type Most full-time OHN's in 2012 work in Hospitals and Health Care (31%), while part-time OHN's are split evenly between Hospitals/Health Care (34%) and Manufacturing (35%), all of which represent slight increases from The number of full-time OHN's working in Hospitals/Health Care increased by 3% from 2009, while the number working in Manufacturing decreased by 3%. 12 Q4. How many employees does your company(s) have? The majority of full-time OHN's work for companies with employees (28%) or companies over 5000 employees (24%). Part-time OHN's tend to work for smaller companies, with over a third (35%) working for companies with employees. Small companies employ fewer full-time OHN's -- only 8% of full-timers work at companies with employees and work at companies between employees. 13 Q5. How many OHNs are responsible for Occupational Health in your company? Most part-time OHN's (55%) are the only person responsible for Occupational Health at the company where they work, and the largest percentage of full-time OHN's (34%) are solely responsible for Occupational Health at their companies. The next largest group of full-time OHNs () and part-time OHN's (15%) work for companies with 6 or more OHNs responsible for Occupational Health (). 14 Q6. Education/Certification The majority of OHN's surveyed have a Diploma Reg.N. (76%) and/or a COHN(C) (58%), and over a third of them (37%) have a Baccalaureate. A small percentage of respondents have a COHN-S (9%), CRSP (6%), Masters (5%) or Post-graduate degree (e.g. PhD) (1%). 17 Q9. Your Age Group The percentage of full-time OHN's in the age group increased slightly (+5%) from 2009 to 2012, while the age group decreased slightly (-8%). Part-time OHN survey participants were generally older than part-timers in 2009, with increased representation in the (+5%) and 61+ (+6%) age groups and reduced representation in the (-5%) and (-6%) age groups. 18 Q10. Please indicate which region you work in The largest percentage of full-time OHN participants work in the Greater Toronto Area (39%), followed by West Ontario (26%). The remainder were spread fairly evenly between East Ontario (14%), South Ontario (11%) and North Ontario (). Experience Levels The percentage of full-time OHN survey participants increased slightly for Level 1 (+3%) and Level 4 (+3%) categories, meanwhile decreasing slightly in the Level 2 (-2%) and Level 3 (-4%) categories. Part-time survey participation increased slightly in the Level 3 (+4%) and Level 4 (+6%) categories, meanwhile decreasing in the Level 1 (-3%) and Level 2 (-6%) categories. 20 Ontario O Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association Salary Su APPENDIX: EXPERIENCE LEVELS for Occupational Health Nurses Level 1 (Registered Nurse with up to 5 years Occupational Health experience. To provide an Occupational Health Service to all employees, which includes education, promotion of positive health models, and treatment of illness and injury. Has participated in courses and/or workshops relating to the specialty). Level 2 (Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5 years Occupational Health experience. As this position may have Supervisory and/or Administrative responsibility, recent positions with increasing levels of responsibility and would be advisable. Has obtained, or is actively working toward, completion of a Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing and is eligible to pursue the CNA certification process in Occupational Health Nursing). Level 3 (Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5-7 years Occupational Health experience. Supervises and is responsible for multi-nurse unit in the development, administration, co-ordination and implementation of activities within an Occupational Health service. Recent positions with increasing levels of supervisory/managerial responsibility. Holds a Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing and a CNA certification in Occupational Health Nursing, COHN(C). An additional safety professional designation, e.g. CRSP is desirable. Management, business and program planning skills would augment nursing qualifications). Level 4 (Registered Nurse with a minimum of 7 years Occupational Health experience. Recent positions with advanced levels of Supervisory/Managerial responsibility. Holds a Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing and a CNA Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing, COHN(C). An additional safety professional designation, e.g. CRSP is desirable. Management, business and program skills would augment nursing qualifications). Level 5 Consultant (Registered Nurse with a minimum of 7-10 years Occupational Health experience. Recent positions with supervisory or managerial responsibility. Holds a Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing and CNA certification, COHN(C). Strongly recommend graduate school preparation as Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Advisor or Nurse Practitioner in progress or considered. The Masters degree may also be in education, business administration, health sciences or occupational and environmental health (Dyck, D Career Streaming: A model of career development. AAOHN Journal, 44 (4), ). Can be either an employee in a senior capacity or act as an advisor (consultant) for evaluating and developing employee health services. The OHN Level 5/Consultant can provide services in administration or education as well as co-ordinate and implement pertinent and relevant Health and Safety programs.
