Your organization s total budget, and a budget for the specific project, if applicable Any deficit incurred on your annual budget Please use the space provided below to provide a summary of organization s history and mission: Hazon, founded in 2000, is the largest environmental organization in the American Jewish community. Hazon, meaning vision in Hebrew, aims to create healthier and more sustainable communities in the Jewish world and beyond. Hazon is a leader in meaningful immersive experiences and in engaging individuals to be active in their communities. In aggregate, we are seeking to shift the nature of what it means to be Jewish in the 21 st century enabling and encouraging Jewish people to have an impact in the world. Hazon builds programs and events that give people a chance to explore their relation to the physical world and to their Judaism within the areas of transformative experiences, thought-leadership, and capacity-building programs. Transformative experiences: Programs that directly touch people s lives, including our annual Hazon Food Conferences, Hazon CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, and Hazon Jewish Environmental Bike Rides (held annually in New York, California, across the United States, and in Israel) Thought-leadership: Resources for others, including teaching, writing, and advocacy. Capacity-building: Supporting and networking partners in North America and Israel. Our overall goal is that individuals and institutions in the Jewish community are living measurably healthier and more sustainable lives. Over the next decade, Hazon plans to take Jewish food education, outdoor education, and environmental education and firmly establish each as important modalities across the American Jewish community.

Does your organization have any political or religious affiliations? If yes, it is essential that this information be included? Yes No If yes, please describe: Hazon is a non-partisan and non-denominational Jewish organization. Hazon serves a national and international population; members of every denomination and those who are unaffiliated; intergenerational from children to seniors, families to singles. Our programs and resources are designed as entry points for Jews of all backgrounds who are concerned about the environment and the world. Getting to know your projects Please describe the specific project or equipment for which you need funds, and the amount of money needed. Please feel free to include more than one option for our consideration. General requests not related to programs or equipment will probably not be considered by the committee. Please submit one succinct paragraph in response to each of the following questions. 1. Describe the goals and objectives of the project(s), and how it relates to the organization s mission. 18,000 Fruit Trees is a project being developed by Hazon, an organization that aims to create healthier and more sustainable communities in the Jewish world and beyond. 18,000 Fruit Trees is a web platform (18000fruittrees.org), designed to encourage institutions and individuals to plant fruit trees between now and September 2014 (when the next Shmita year begins). Hazon plans to pilot this project in the New York region and ultimately expand nationally. These trees will take several years to mature to fruition and by September 2021 the start of the following Shmita year participating institutions will be able to mirror the biblical injunction s values of local food security and fair distribution by proudly announcing, These are our Shmita fruit trees please simply come and help yourselves to the harvest as needed. The web platform, 18000fruittrees.org, is designed to: 1. Serve as an interactive and supportive educational branch of Hazon 2. Enable individuals and organizations to connect to and develop powerful relationships within their local communities 3. Explain the background and significance of Shmita, linking local communities to Hazon s Shmita Project 4. Explain the ecological and social importance of perennial food systems 5. Support local initiatives to strengthen food security for Jewish and non-jewish community members 6. Serve as a shared resource, education database, and hub for supporting community action Some methods we will use to reach these goals include: Outlining the ideal planting methods, growing conditions, and environments for various fruit and nut trees (outlined by region and climate)

Hosting a shared blog to encourage individuals and organizations to post photos from, and articles about, the fruit tree growing process, from planting to harvesting Inviting site visitors (individuals and community organizations) to pledge to plant a certain number of trees by 2014, as well as to contribute and receive financial donations to sponsor fruit tree plantings Creating an interactive map of all fruit trees planted across North America through 18,000 Fruit Trees, along with an online counter that reads XXX trees pledged and XXX trees planted Offering incentives to participants and communities with the most trees planted Providing online and in-person training in local community organizing, tree plantings, and more 2. Describe previous projects that your organization has successfully developed and describe the specific results achieved. Hazon is best known for our Jewish Environmental Bike Rides, in New York, California, and Israel, which have raised over $5.9 million and given grants of over $1.9 million to Jewish environmental projects over the past ten years. They bring together a remarkably diverse group of Jewish people, foster people s Jewish journeys, and inspire participants. This year, our 4th annual Golden Gate Ride took place over Memorial Day weekend and had 113 participants. Hazon raised over $110,000 with riders and crew members continuing to fundraise through the end of June Our outdoor adventure programs re-envision Jewish life as being not only about the people of the book, but about the people of the bike to be fit, healthy, and to better understand our environmental footprint. Since 2004, we have also worked with great success to engage the Jewish community in the sustainable food movement. This year, the Hazon Food Festival: Rocky Mountains was a great success. 220 participants enjoyed a day with 21 programs (including many Do-It- Yourself workshops), a keynote address, a shuk or market with 20 vendors and organizations, a challah contest, a silent auction (that raised $876), and beer tasting. From across the spectrum of Jewish affiliation and observance, our participants gather for food festivals and conferences throughout the country each year. The community of Jewish foodies, rabbis, educators, environmentalists, grassroots leaders, families, farmers, chefs, nutritionists and more come together for 1-4 days to teach and learn about the connections between Jewish tradition and contemporary food issues. Additionally, in 2013 Hazon hosted a California Food Festival in San Francisco, offering more than 30 dynamic sessions for area foodies. This fall, we plan to launch our first ever Philadelphia Food Festival, called Liberty, Food, & Justice for All, where people from the region will get a taste of the local Jewish Food Movement. 3. Describe who will benefit from this project, directly and (if applicable) indirectly. Provide any specific numbers if possible. The educational component of 18,000 Fruit Trees is designed to have participants who come from all corners of the diverse Jewish community (and beyond) pledge and plant trees in community gardens throughout the country. Hazon aims to make this program accessible to all, including low-income families and community members in need. Our participating and collaborating organizations span across all Jewish denominations (from unaffiliated to

Orthodox), ages, ethnicities, and native languages. Additionally, this program is open to non- Jews and other faith-based groups. Through our extensive programming experience, we have seen the impact of hands-on learning experiences that bring populations who otherwise would not be connected to one another to connect to social justice, community, and Jewish issues, in a fun, educational, transformative setting. We anticipate that 18,000 Fruit Trees will connect these segments of Jewish communities in New York, and beyond, to build a foundation to strengthen families, communities, volunteerism, and Jewish learning for years to come. 4. Provide the specific activities and timetable for the project. Volunteers, connected to the project individually or through organizations, will serve through the hands-on activity of planting trees in their communities throughout the country. This activity begins with volunteers gathering participants and materials. Each individual or organization will pledge a certain number of trees and then prepare the planting areas. Volunteers will engage in the hands-on experience of planting, tending to, and harvesting the trees throughout each year and document the growing process by taking pictures and writing blog entries, and posting these to the website. Planting perennial fruit and nuts trees nourishes the land and provides individuals with the fruits of their labor year after year, reinforcing the value of sustainability from generation to generation (l dor v dor). Hazon will facilitate connections between participants and community beneficiaries, including food pantries and shelters, to supply people living nearby with this healthy food. Through this volunteer work, participants will become directly connected to the source of their food and feel empowered to continue to take an active role in continuing to build sustainable systems that will benefit their local communities. The projected timetable for 18,000 Fruit Trees: a. Summer 2013: Project research, acquire funds, gather materials b. Fall 2013: Build website, project marketing c. Winter 2014: Launch website, begin planting program 5. Explain the need for this project. Are other organizations addressing this concern or similar concern? If so, do you plan to collaborate on projects? Explain. Hazon is setting the stage for the upcoming (and future) Shmita year by establishing 18,000 Fruit Trees, grounded in the biblical and modern teachings of Shmita. The content of 18000fruittrees.org will be formed in collaboration with educators from Hazon, the Jewish Greening Fellowship, and the Teva Learning Alliance. This collaboration will take place in Makom Hadash, the shared office space in lower Manhattan where all three organizations are currently housed andwhere member organizations can collaborate effectively together in a warm, friendly, communal space. The collaboration between Hazon and the community will be established through a marketing campaign designed to solicit the website and promote the concepts of Shmita and connecting people to their food. Initially, Hazon will target 20 religious institutions, community centers, schools, and work places that reflect the wide spectrum of Jewish life in the New York Area. Participating organizations will experience transformative volunteer service and learning that will span many years, connecting generations and ultimately, enhancing Jewish peoplehood. Hazon anticipates that the excitement generated from 18,000 Fruit Trees will expand beyond the New York community and inspire participation and volunteer work throughout the country.

6. What criteria will you use to measure this project s progress or success? Please explain how you will evaluate this project using those criteria, so that you can report back to the Tikun Olam Fund after one year. We will be recording how many fruit trees will be planted with the support of this specific initiative, as well as (in the coming years) how many pounds of fruit are harvested and donated. We will also be observing how well local community networks begin to form in collaborative efforts to plant and harvest on local synagogue, school, community center, and private lands. Finally, as much of this work will rely on volunteer efforts and local partnerships, we will also be closely observing how well people take ownership of the resources, ideas, and trainings we are offering, to begin implementing these designs in their own community. The evaluation of success will depend on these factors.
