2 A History of Health Care Excellence More than 130 years ago, Julia Johns had a vision. She was concerned about the health of the Alexandria community and brought together a group of experienced, caring and dedicated health care professionals to open Alexandria s first hospital. In these times of change, it is nice to know that some things remain the same. Today, as our community s need for health care continues to grow, Inova remains dedicated to preserving the tradition of providing quality health care to our community.
3 I nova s history of providing health care to Northern Virginians began more than 130 years ago with the vision of Julia Johns, a local citizen concerned about Alexandria s need for a hospital. Here are just a few of our memorable events over the years Fearing a typhoid epidemic among the crew on board a ship in Old Town Alexandria s harbor, Julia Johns calls upon a group of friends at St. Paul s Church and forms the Alexandria Infirmary Association on December 12. This group later becomes the Board of Lady Managers. They govern the hospital until the 1940s and continue to support the hospital today The Alexandria Infirmary opens its doors to patients on January 23. It is housed at the Dr. Francis Murphy House on the southwest corner of Duke and Fairfax Streets The Alexandria Infirmary moves to 1315 Duke Street, between Henry and Fayette Streets The first surgery, an amputation, is performed by Dr. George T. Klipstein The Board of Lady Managers buys the Orphans Asylum at Pitt and Wolfe Streets. It becomes the hospital s fourth location A school of nursing is opened at the Alexandria Infirmary.
4 1900 The Alexandria Infirmary outpatient dispensary opens, marking the beginning of outpatient care Spurred by lack of space and the growing demand for health care, the hospital moves to a new, larger building at the corner of Duke and Washington streets on land donated by Edward Daingerfield The Alexandria Infirmary changes its name to The Auxiliary Board organizes and operates a gift store. Clinical laboratories and X-ray units open at is fully approved for residency training in medicine, surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, pathology and radiology is the first hospital on the East Coast to institute the use of epidural anesthesia in obstetrics Ground is broken for the new Seminary Road location The hospital s 50,000th baby is born is the first facility in the nation to staff an emergency department around the clock with full-time dedicated ER physicians. It becomes known nationally as the Alexandria Plan.
5 Celebrating more than 130 Years of Health Care Excellence Today 1977 is the first hospital in Northern Virginia to provide a full body computerized tomography (CT) scan unit The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Center opens, the first in Northern Virginia merges with Inova Health System to become Inova moves to its new building on Seminary Road. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson speaks at the opening ceremony. The hospital s chaplaincy program is established opens the first birthing rooms where labor, delivery and recovery occur in the same room. The Foundation is established to provide philanthropic support for the hospital becomes the first in the area and second in the country to have an excimer laser which is used primarily for the treatment of patients with vascular disease. The Northern Virginia Cancer Center, now known as the Inova Cancer Center, opens. Today Inova remains dedicated to meeting the health care needs of the communities we serve today and in the future.
6 The Inova Foundation adds to the strength and excellence of the hospital's services by sponsoring health programs and raising funds for equipment and facility improvements.
