3 SCHOOL OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING & ROAD TRANSPORT 1.0 INTRODUCTION CERTIFICATE IV IN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING (MAJOR IN BODY WORKS) 1.1 Title CERTIFICATE IV IN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING (MAJOR IN BODY WORKS) 1.2 Rationale 1. Consultation with stakeholder through the Industry Advisory Committee [IAC] revealed that the wide range of / Certificate IV in Automotive Engineering (Majoring in Body Works) available in Fiji and the region requires higher level of competencies and specialization in this industry of Automotive. 2. A review of Certificate IV in (Body Works) programme has revealed the need to strengthen the existing curriculum with respect to modern vehicles with new dimensions and new technological changes to reflect the demand from stakeholders. 3. The Industrial Advisory Committee [IAC] looked into the content of the existing Certificate IV programme ascertained the need to include a high level of competency skill. 1.3 Graduate Profile 1. They should be able to repair any type of accident vehicles or do body work on any vehicle and bring to its original shape. 2. Demonstrate good interactive skills and high level of independence. 1.4 Philosophy The Program is based on the Educational Philosophy of developing the total person and mastering the required cognitive, psychomotor and effective skills. For the students should apply such skills and capabilities in these areas effectively and efficiently. To meet the requirements of the industry the student needs development to: Acquire skills Effective communications. The implications of this philosophy on the program have influenced the choice of content (e.g. units and topics) and methodology to be used and choice of assessment for this program. 1.5 Aims & Objectives 1. To acquire extensive knowledge, practical, reasoning and solving skills applied to problems in the real world of work related to the Certificate IV in Automobile Engineering [Body Works] 2. 4 2.0 PROGRAMME REGULATIONS 2.1 Admission Requirements: Pass in Fiji Year 12 (From 6) with 200 out of 400 marks with pass (50% or more) in English and any 3 best subjects. OR holder of Cert III.Applicants may also be admitted to Certificate IV programmes who may not meet the 12 years of continuous progression requirement, but who are able to demonstrate their ability to succeed in programmes at these levels on the basis of maturity, work experience, or prior learning. The Dean may require such an applicant to sit for any specific or general examination as a prerequisite for any such enrolment, or may restrict enrolment only to certain prescribed courses, which must be passed to progress further. 2.2 Credit Value The program contains 17 units. The total program credit points are Programme Duration The full time program shall be completed within a minimum period of 2 years and maximum period of 4 years. The part-time program shall be complete within a period of 5 years. 2.4 Cross Credit Cross crediting of units shall be done as per the mention by University Academic and Student Regulations (UASR). 2.5 Assessment The Board of Studies shall determine the standards required for the grades of performance in a unit and for the basis on which academic credits shall be granted. Any work presented by a student for assessment must be the work of the student and not be submitted elsewhere in any other unit or programme unless or otherwise permitted by Programme Leader. 6 3.2 Compulsory As stated in 3.1 Unit Table Automotive Body Works Components 3.3 Optional Units None 3.4 Special Requirements A student has to undergo Industrial attachment after successful completion of each trimester of study at F.N.U. Each period of attachment is1 trimester or 640 hours where the student required undergoing training as trainee technician at a registered motor vehicle workshop under supervision with constant monitoring process. OHS is another important course and industrial requirement that a student has to undertake that will allow successfully graduating and being absorbed into the industry. 3.5 Delivery Mode Full time program of study. Part time [EA] study, evenings only is available for adult learners where a minimum of 2 units are offered. 3.6 Order of Delivery Order of delivery commences from Trimester 1 units and proceeds towards Trimester ASSESSMENT 4.1 Assessment Philosophy 4.2 Methods of Assessment 4.3 Criteria for Assessment 4.4 Fairness, Validity & Reliability In line with the programme philosophy, assessment focuses on measuring practical knowledge and skills that are used to analyse and solve problems associated with Certificate IV in Automobile Engineering. [Majoring in Body Works] 1. Wide ranges of assessment methods are used. Although the programme is skills based, all the three domains are assessed. The assessment methods are shown under the individual Unit Descriptors of the 18 units have no final examination components and are totally progressively assessed by course work. The breakdown is shown on the Unit Descriptors units have final examination component of 50% Coursework and 50% Final Examination as shown in the Unit Descriptors. 4. The Breakdown of Coursework component is shown on the Unit Descriptors. The criteria for the award of grades will be in accordance with USAR. 1. Responsibility is vested upon the teaching staff to design a systematic approach on the mode of deliverance of the programme and the assessment criteria for this programme. 2. The staff involved shall meet every Monthly chaired by the Program Leader to evaluate on the: a. Progress of staff role, b. Student performance & progress report and c. Make recommended changes to facilitate better skill and understanding and improve quality of student outcomes. 3. Moderation and assessment of coursework and final exam papers shall be conducted by staff [internally & externally] through the recommendation of the Exam Board and the blessing from the Academic Board for fairness, validity and reliability. The final Examination Papers for the Certificate IV in Automobile Engineering Majoring in Vehicle Body Repairs trimester 3 shall be moderated and assessed by the appointed member from the Industry Advisory Committee through the recommendation of the School Examination Board and approval from the CollegeAcademic Board. 7 5.0 TEACHING & LEARNING STRATEGIES 5.1 Introduction The Teaching and Learning process shall be designed to meet the Learning Outcomes with an emphasis on student oriented and self-directed learning activities. The main theme shall be anchored on applied Technology directly related to working practice. 5.2 Student centred Learning Encourage the development of the independent learner and the teaching strategies will accommodate the following: i. The amount of classroom time, reference books and written resources. ii. The amount of workshop time, where classroom learning is applied in real life situation. iii. Graded projects will be used to facilitate the development of independent learning skills. 5.3 Methods The teaching methods used are: a) Student centred learning b) Tutorials c) Problem based learning d) Self-discovered learning Laboratory experimental and testing Industrial Tour to experience new technologies in Automotive Vehicle Body Works that is not available in house. 6.0 MONITORING, EVALUATION & REVIEW OF PROGRAM 6.1 Board of studies HOS Chairman, Program Leader/s, Teaching Staff and Student Representative. This Board shall be responsible to the College Academic Board on the following: 1. Ensure that the curriculum is continuously developed, maintained as relevant to the objectives of the programme and be in par with advancing technology. 2. Ensure the maintenance of quality standards of teaching and student performance. 3. Advise on the procedures and criteria for recruitment, selection and admission of students. 4. Identify additional requirements 6.2 Examination Boards 6.3 On-going Monitoring 6.4 External Moderation 6.5 Industry Advisory Committee In special circumstances the College Academic Board may vary the membership of a Board of Studies where the University and an external body jointly oversee programmes concerned, and the qualification is jointly awarded. When a review of a programme is due, the Board of Studies may require the services of the Industry to review the programme and make recommendations and give advice. Meet 3 times a year for each Trimester programme. Program review committee does this role and it is an ongoing process Final Exam papers are externally moderated by experts in appropriate fields.
