3 Congratulations KIPPsters! You are taking an even further step in continuing your education. As you know, financial planning and preparedness is one of the biggest and most important steps in the college-going process. With over $3 billion in scholarship money available to students each year, it is critical to begin the scholarship search early and this guidebook can help you get started. Quick Tips and Important Definitions Grants: Similar to a scholarship, this is money that does not have to be repaid and is most often given out based on a student s financial need Loans: Money that is borrowed and must be repaid to the lender, usually with interest Work-study: Provides funds for part-time employment to help students to finance the costs of tuition Scholarships: A form of financial aid intended to bridge the gap between what a family can contribute and the actual cost of tuition. Scholarships can be won for a number of different talents, skills, accomplishments, or experiences. It is imperative that students begin to make a list of scholarships they would be eligible for as early as possible. Remember This is not a completely comprehensive list. Be sure to take the time to expand your search. Organize all the applications by deadline and make sure that you collect all of the necessary materials. Have at least 2 other people read any essays you write for your applications. Treat each application with care. Do not wait until the last minute to apply! 4 SEPTEMBER MESBEC PROGRAM Eligibility: Applicants must be 1/4 or more degree American Indian, enrolled in a tribe, and attend or plan to attend college full-time and study math, science, engineering, or technology. Award: $500-$5,000 Deadline: March 15, 2014 (summer school) Deadline: April 15, 2014 (fall semester/quarter) Deadline: September 15, 2014 (spring semester/quarter) Contact: OCTOBER ASIAN & PACIFIC ISLANDER AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND Eligibility: Various scholarships awarded to students of Asian and Pacific Islander heritages. Recipients must have a minimum 2.7 GPA. Awards are made on the basis of academic record, future plans, community service, financial need, and leadership. The APIASF Community College Scholarship Program is available for students at City College of San Francisco, Coastline Community College, De Anza College, and South Seattle Community College. Award: $2,500-$5,000 Deadline: January 10, 2014 Contact: DIVERSITY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP Eligibility: Minority students currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program. Applicants need to have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and must be accepted to the study abroad program with a DiversityAbroad.com Partner Organization. Students need to submit a video essay answering the following question: How do you feel your experience abroad will prepare you for your future career? Additional documents required are a resume and references. See website for more details. Award: 10 awards for $500 each Deadline: Spring 2014 Semester October 18 Summer 2014 Semester- March 7 Fall 2014 Semester- May 2 Contact: NOVEMBER EDUCATION FUND: EMPOWERING EDITING S FUTURE Eligibility: College juniors or seniors, graduate students and college graduates with high academic standing who are interested in pursuing a career in copy editing. You must have been in school for at least one full term or enrolled for such during the period summer 2013 through spring Applicants need to submit a 500 word essay on the aspects of copy editing that are and will be most important in a multimedia world, the headlines of up to 6 pieces they have written, and 3 references. Award: one award for $2,500, and four awards for $1,000 Deadline: November 15, 2013 Contact: 4
5 DECEMBER HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND (HSF) GENERAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eligibility: Students may find scholarships for all interests and fields of study. General requirements include: students must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, of Hispanic descent, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, be a full-time student, and apply for financial aid using the FAFSA. Some scholarships have other specific criteria, check website for details. Award: $1,000-$5,000 Deadline: December 15 th 2013 Contact: STEPHEN J. BRADY STOP HUNGER SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility: The Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarships recognize students who are driving awareness and mobilizing youth to be catalysts for innovative models and solutions to eliminate hunger in America. Students enrolled in any grade through graduate programs are eligible to apply. Award: $5000 scholarship for tuition and $5000 to a charitable organization Deadline: December 5, 2013 Contact: JANUARY BLACK COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility: For students attending a Historically Black College or University. Students must sign-up on website to search scholarships. Award: $1,000 Deadline: January 1st of each year Contact: MICROSOFT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eligibility: Student populations currently underrepresented in the field of computer science to pursue technical degrees: African-American, Hispanic, or Native American. 6 FEBRUARY ADHA INSTITUTE FOR ORAL HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eligibility: Students who are already enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students who are currently pursuing or who are interested in pursuing a career in dental hygiene. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA Deadline: February 1 st Contact: ALLIANCE/MERCK CIENCIA (Science) HISPANIC SCHOLARS PROGRAM Eligibility: Open to high school and college students of Hispanic heritage who plan to pursue a career/majoring in science, technology, engineering or math. Students must have a minimum 2.75 GPA and attend high school in Los Angeles, CA. Award: $2,000 (College Students) $42,500 (High School) Deadline: February 15 th See website for exact dates Contact: AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Minority Scholarship Eligibility: Open to African American, Hispanic, and Native American high school seniors, freshman, and sophomore undergraduate students who plan or are majoring in physics. Award: $2,000-$3,000 Deadline: February 7 th 2014 Contact: BOREN AWARDS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate students planning to major in foreign languages and cultures. Awards are to be used for study abroad terms (both summer programs and semester programs). Students must also agree to seek employment with the federal government upon graduation. Award: $8,000 to $20,000 Deadline: February 5 th 2014 Contact: COLGATE BRIGHT SMILES, BRIGHT FUTURES, MINORITY SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility: Full-time, minority (African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and Males) undergraduate/graduate students currently under represented in the Dental Hygiene profession may apply. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA Deadline: February 1, 2014 Contact: IOTA SIGMA PI UNDERGRADUATE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN CHEMISTRY Eligibility: The Iota Sigma Pi Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Chemistry recognizes excellence in chemistry by a woman undergraduate student. The candidate shall be a senior woman chemistry student in an accredited college or university that grants a four year degree. The candidate may be, but need not be, a member of Iota Sigma Pi. Nominations for the award must be made by faculty members of the candidate s current institution. Only one nomination may be submitted by a single department. Deadline: February 15 th Contact: 6
7 THE LAGRANT FOUNDATION Eligibility: Available to ethnic minority students majoring in advertising, marketing or public relations (as well as art, anthropology, English, communications, graphic design and sociology while demonstrating a career path in advertising, marketing or public relations) with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Students in their freshman-junior years at a 4 year college can apply. Award: $5,000, multiple awards Deadline: February 28 th 2014 Contact: Scholarships LAMBA THETA ALPHA SORORITY Inc. Eligibility: California undocumented students who are seniors in high school who plan on enrolling in college or current college students may apply. Award: $500 Deadline: Mid January (See website for exact details) Contact: NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK JOURNALISTS SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility: Students interested in pursuing a career in journalism with strong academic standing should apply. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born students, currently attending an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school. To be considered and to receive a scholarship, all applicants must be a member of NABJ. Award: Up to $2,500. Deadline: March 21, 2014 Contact: ONCOLOGY NURSING SOCIETY FOUNDATION: BACHELOR S IN NURSING DEGREE SCHOLARSHIP Eligibility: Scholarships are available to individuals who are pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing, enrolled in their senior year, do not currently hold an RN license and do not have a college degree. There is a $5 application fee. Award: $2,000 Deadline: February 1, 2014 Contact: SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility: For women who are majoring in engineering or computer science, must have had at least one semester at a college or university to apply. The minimum GPA is 3.5/4.0 for freshman applicants and 3.0/4.0 for sophomore, junior, senior and graduate applicants. Award: $200 to $5,000. At least 90 are granted. 8 MARCH NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eligibility: Students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, or social science health research. Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA Award: Up to $20,000 Deadline: March 3 rd 2014 Contact: ACS/BAYER SCHOLAR PROGRAM Eligibility: African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in chemistry or chemistry related field. Must be a U.S. Citizen and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. High School seniors and freshman-junior undergraduates may apply. Award: $2,500-$5,000 Deadline: March 1 st Contact: HALLIE Q. BROWN SCHOLARSHIP FUND Eligibility: For minority students who demonstrate financial need and are recommended by a member of the National Association of Colored Women s Clubs. Must have a 2.0 minimum GPA. Deadline: March 31 st Contact: LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS (LULAC) NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Eligibility: LULAC Councils will award scholarships to qualified Hispanic students who are enrolled or are planning to enroll in accredited colleges or universities in the United States. Students must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and must have applied to or be enrolled as a full-time student in a college, university, or graduate school, including 2-year colleges, or vocational schools that lead to an associate s degree. 9 APRIL AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS (AIA) FOUNDATION Eligibility: High school seniors and undergraduate minority and/or disadvantaged students who are pursuing a career in architectural studies. Student must be accepted to a NAAB accredited architecture school. Students must submit an essay, statement of disadvantaged circumstances, letters of recommendations, transcripts and a drawing. Students must be U.S. citizens Award: $3,000-$4,000 Deadline: (See website for exact date) Contact: AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility: Undergraduates studying accounting, finance, or information systems at a U.S. college. Must have at least 30 credits completed at the time of application. Award: up to $5,000, about 300 winners annually. Students must plan to attend a community college or university that is within the United States or Puerto Rico full-time for the entire academic year. 12 SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility: For women who are majoring in engineering or computer science, must have had at least one semester at a college or university to apply. The minimum GPA is 3.5/4.0 for freshman applicants and 3.0/4.0 for sophomore, junior, senior and graduate applicants. Award: $200 to $5,000. At least 90 are granted. Deadline: The deadline for upperclassmen and graduate students will be February 15 th. Freshmen will have a May 15 deadline. Contact: JUNE ACCENTURE AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIP Eligibility: Must be enrolled in a federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native tribe. Must display academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, commitment to preserving American Indian culture and communities. Must be majoring in one of the following: Various Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Management, Finance, Marketing and Other Business Oriented Fields. Must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher. 13 SCHOLARSHIPS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE PROOF OF U.S. CITIZENSHIP OR LEGAL PERMANENT RESIDENCY DECEMBER SCHOLARSHIP AMERICA Eligibility: Sophomore year or higher during the academic year. Be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), or individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA). Have received a high school diploma or the equivalent from a U.S. school, by September, 2013, have completed or expect to successfully complete a minimum of one full year of postsecondary education by June 2014, plan to enroll in full time undergraduate study at the sophomore year level or higher at an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational-technical school in the United States for the entire academic year, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent), and demonstrate financial need.
