2 Texas School Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use for Clarendon CISD Elementary Report- - - Grades 4-6 Statewide norms are indicated parenthetically. Demographic Overview 87 students participated: 23% 4 th. Graders, 41% 5 th. Graders, 37% 6 th. Graders. 59% male & 41% female students. Ethnic breakdown of 64% White, 11% African- American, 14% Mexican- American, 1% Asian- American, 4% Native- American, 6% other. 55% live in a two family home and 85% report to living in the district for three years or more. 59% report parents to be college graduates, and 26% indicate they qualify for free/reduced lunches at school. Tobacco General tobacco use includes both cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products.. 16% of district elementary students said some or most of their close friends smoke cigarettes (11%). 11% of district elementary students have been offered cigarettes (9%). 17% of district elementary students reported some or most of their close friends use snuff or chewing tobacco (5%) and 14% have been offered a smokeless tobacco product (4%). The influence of drug education programs reflects the attitude of 76% of Clarendon Elementary student s belief that tobacco use is very dangerous (76%). Alcohol Alcohol is the most widely used substance among Texas elementary students. 32% of Clarendon CISD elementary students said some or most of their close friends drink beer, wine coolers, wine or liquor (21%), and 30% reported they had been offered alcohol (20%). Clarendon CISD elementary students who said they drink alcohol were asked where they obtained these beverages. 5% of district elementary students said they get alcohol from home (7%), 5% reported obtaining alcohol from friends (2%), and 8% said they got alcohol from somewhere else (6%). When asked how their parents feel about kids their age drinking beer, 83% of Clarendon CISD elementary students said their parents don t like it (83%), 17% said don t know (13%), and 0% said parents don t care (3%).
3 15% of Clarendon CISD elementary students said they had two or more drinks of beer in a row at least once during the past year, (10%), 6% said they had two or more drinks of wine coolers in a row at least once during the past year (4%), 8% said they had two or more drinks of wine in a row (7%) and 7% said that had two or more drinks of liquor in a row at least once in the past year (4%). Marijuana 6% of Clarendon CISD elementary students said some or most of their close friends use marijuana (7%), and 4% reported they had been offered marijuana (5%). When asked about parental attitudes toward marijuana use, 88% said their parents don t like it when kids their age smoke marijuana. (84%), while 12% said that they don t know how their parents feel (14%) and 0% reported their parent s don t care if kids their age smoke marijuana (1%). Inhalants In general, inhalants are common, licit substances (paints and thinners, correction fluid, glue and gasoline) which, when sniffed, huffed, or inhaled produce an intoxicating effect. 15% of Clarendon CISD elementary students said some or most of their close friends use inhalants (9%), and 5% said they had been offered inhalants (6%). 63% of Clarendon ISD elementary students believe inhalant use is very dangerous (64%). 8% of elementary students reported using inhalants at least once during their lifetime (10%). 5% said they had used inhalants during the past school year (7%). 5% of elementary students reported using two or more inhalant substances at least once during their lifetimes (5%). 3% of the district elementary students reported inhaling whiteout/correction fluid/magic markers (6%), 1% reported inhaling glue (4%), 2% reported inhaling spray paint (3%), 6% reported inhaling gasoline (3%), 1% reported inhaling paint thinner (2%) and 5% reported inhaling substances in the other inhalants category (3%) at least once during their lifetimes. Drug and Alcohol Information 87% of Clarendon CISD elementary students said they had received information about drugs and alcohol from a school source since classes began in the fall (81%). 64% of the students said their teacher was a source of information about drugs and alcohol (51%). 57% reported getting information about drugs and alcohol from a school assembly program (55%).
4 Texas School Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use for Clarendon CISD Secondary Report- - - Grades 7-12 Statewide norms are indicated parenthetically. In the spring of 2012 the Texas School Survey was administered to students in grades 7-12 in the Clarendon CISD. A total of 188 students completed the questionnaire. Of that number, 8 surveys were excluded from analysis because they did not indicate their grade or age, or because they were identified as exaggerators (i.e., claimed to have used a non- existent drug or reported overly excessive drug use). The final number of surveys in the overall district analysis was 180, consisting of: 15% 7 th. graders, 17% 8 th. graders, 11% 9 th. graders, 18% 10 th. graders, 20% 11 th. graders and 19% 12 th. graders. 46% male and 54% female students. Ethnic breakdown is 67% White, 11% African- American, 13% Mexican- America, 1 % Asian- American, 3% Native American and 6% other. 44% indicated that they live in a two- parent home, and 84% report living in the district for three or more years. 58% say their parent(s) are college graduates, and 37% indicate that they qualify for free/reduced lunches at school. Tobacco General tobacco use includes both cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products. 60% of Clarendon students reported cigarettes are somewhat or very easy to get (47%). 54% indicated that smokeless tobacco products are somewhat or very easy to get (32%), and 15% indicated most of their close friends use smokeless tobacco (4%). When asked about parental attitudes toward the use of cigarettes by kids your age, 78% said their parents strongly or mildly disapprove of kids smoke (85%) while 13% said parents neither approve nor disapprove (6%), and 6% of district students said they don t know how their parents feel about kids their age smoking cigarettes (7%). 40% of Clarendon secondary students reported general tobacco use at least once during their lifetime (28%). 28% said they had used a tobacco product during the past month (11%). 35% reported smoking cigarettes at least once during their lifetimes (26%), while 22% had smoked cigarettes during the past month (10%) and 9% reported smoking cigarettes on a daily basis (2%).
5 Experimental use of smokeless tobacco products was reported by 25% of Clarendon CISD secondary students (9%). 14% said they had used a smokeless tobacco product during the past month (4%), and 6% reported using a smokeless tobacco product on a daily basis (1%). Alcohol Alcohol is the most widely used substance among students statewide and in Clarendon CISD. 29% of district students reported most or all of their close friends drink alcohol (25%), and 60% said alcohol (beer, wine coolers, wine, and liquor) was somewhat easy or very easy to obtain (58%). When asked where students obtained it all or most of the time, 33% responded at parties (26%), while 28% responded from friends (19%), and 5% reported they get alcohol from the store (6%). When asked how their parents feel about kids their age drinking beer, 79% said their parents strongly or mildly disapprove (79%), while 12% said their parents neither approve nor disapprove of such behavior (10%), and 4% said the don t know how their parents feel about kids their age drinking beer (6%). 64% of Clarendon CISD secondary students had reported consuming alcohol at least once during their lifetime (58%), and 30% said they had consumed alcohol during the past month (25%). The alcoholic beverages most often consumed by Clarendon CISD secondary students are beer at 58% (42%) and wine coolers at 45% (36%). 32% said they drink beer (22%) and 21% reported drinking wine coolers on a weekly or monthly basis (18%). 21% said they usually drink five or more beers at a tine on average when they drink(12%), while 13% said they usually drink five or more wine coolers at a time on an average when they drink (8%). 6% reported attending at least one class at Clarendon CISD during the past school year while drunk (6%). 18% of Clarendon HS students in grades 9-12 said they had driven a car after having a good bit to drink at least once during the past year (8%). Driving while intoxicated four or more times during the past year was reported by 3% of district 9-12 grades (2%) 36% report Clarendon CISD secondary students said alcohol was used at most or all of the parties they attended in the past school year (25%). 1% of Clarendon CISD secondary students said they had gotten into trouble with their teacher because of alcohol use at least once during the past school year (1%), while 1% reported they had gotten in trouble with the police because of their alcohol use during the past year (2%), and 9% said they had difficulties of any kind with friends because of one s own drinking (5%).
6 Illicit and Licit Substances Illicit drugs are defined as controlled substances and include marijuana, cocaine (powdered form and crack), uppers (stimulants), downers (narcotics, Rohypnol, hallucinogens, ecstasy, and heroin. Licit substances are those legally purchased either over- the- counter (DMX or Coricidin) or via a physician s prescription (Codeine, Oxycontin, Vicodin or Valium). 31% of Clarendon CISD secondary students said marijuana was somewhat or very easy to obtain (38%). 7% indicated that powdered cocaine was easily accessible (14%), and 9% indicated that ecstasy was easily accessible (16%). 7% of district students said they believed heroin was somewhat or very easy to obtain (8%). In regard to question of the effects of peer influence on substance use, 9% of Clarendon ISD students reported most or all of the close friends smoke marijuana (19%). When asked of parental attitudes toward marijuana use, 88% of students reported parental disapproval (86%). 3% of district students said they don t know how parents feel (6%), while 5% said parents neither approve nor disapprove (5%). 65% of Clarendon CISD secondary students believe that marijuana use is very dangerous (58%). 78% of secondary students indicated ecstasy to be very dangerous (78%) and 83% believe powdered cocaine use is very dangerous (85%). 86% feel the use of crack is very dangerous (87%), and 85% believe that heroin is very dangerous (87%). In Clarendon CISD 16% of secondary students reported experimental use of an illicit drug (27%), and 10% of Clarendon CISD students reported smoking marijuana at least once in their lifetime (15%). Past- month marijuana use was reported by 5% of secondary students (5%). Other illicit substances are used by a smaller number of Clarendon CISD students. 2% of district students said they had used downers (5%), 0% reported the use of Rohypnol (2%), and 0% reported using heroin (1%), at least once during their lifetimes. 1% of secondary students said they had used powdered cocaine (4%), 2% reported using uppers (5%), 3% said they had used hallucinogens (4%), 3% reported using ecstasy (6%), 1% indicated the use of crack (1%), and 4% has used steroids (1%), at least once during their lives. 2% reported they had use methamphetamine at least one time during their lives (2%), 0% said they had done so during the previous month (1%). When asked whether they had used an otherwise legal product (i.e., prescription or over- the- counter drugs) for recreational purposes, 9% of
7 district students reported using a prescription cough syrup containing Codeine (Lean, Nods, AC/DC) at least once in their lives to get high (11%). 4% said they had done so with Oxycontin/Percodan/Percocet/Oxycodone (4%), 9% indicated they had used Vicodin/Lortab/Lorcet/Hydrocodone (7%), 3% reported the use of Valium or Dinzepam (2%), and 3 % reported using Xanax or Alprazolam (4%) at least once in their lives to get high. 5% of students indicated they had used over the counter products DXM or Coricidin ( Triple C s, Skittles ) at least one time to get high (5%). 6% of Clarendon ISD students report attending at least one class in the past year while stoned on marijuana (11%). Driving under the influence of drugs at least once during the past year was reported by 11% of 9-12 t grade students at Clarendon HS (9%). Driving while stoned ten or more times during the past year was reported by 1% of 9-12 graders (2%). 14% of Clarendon CISD secondary students said that marijuana and/or other drugs were used at most or all of the parties they attend during the school year (16%). 2% of Clarendon CISD students said they had gotten into trouble with their teacher because of illicit drug use at least once during the past school year (1%), while 3% reported they had gotten in trouble with the police because of their use of illegal drugs during the past year (2%), and 4% said they had gotten into difficulties of any kind with their friends during the past year because of their drug use (5%). Drug and Alcohol Information 61% of Clarendon CISD secondary students said they had received information about drugs and alcohol from any school source since classes began in the fall (58%). Of the eight available responses as to the source of information about drugs, a health class was reported by 34% of district students (47%), while 75% said the source for this information was an assembly program (48%). When asked where they would go for help with a drug or alcohol problem, 68% said they would seek help from friends (67%), 65% would seek help from an adult friend or relative (62%), and 65% would seek assistance from their parents (63%). 40% would seek help from a counselor or program in school (37%), and 45% would seek assistance from another adult in school, such as a teacher or nurse (41%).
8 Since school began in the fall, 7% of Clarendon CISD students reported seeking help for any problem connected with alcohol or drug use from someone other than family or friends (8%) Part 4.
