1 BULLETIN BLESSING INSTITUTE REACHES OUT 2011 Barclay College and The Blessing Institute presented The Choice For Healthy Relationships in Greensburg, KS on Saturday, January 15. The event was hosted by the Kiowa County Ministerial Alliance. Nearly 50 individuals attended the three-hour seminar. The Choice For Healthy Relationships is one of three seminars facilitated across the country by Tony Wheeler, PhD, President of The Dr. John Trent Institute for the Blessing at Barclay College. The Choice For Marriage and The Choice For Parenting are two additional seminar options that churches and related organizations are invited to host within their church or community. The Choice is taken from Deut. 30:19, Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. (NLT). The model of instruction presented in The Choice seminars, as well as local church leadership training, is known as Family Ministry Systems. Besides the three relationship seminars, Dr. Wheeler also presents training classes to key leadership within the congregation that includes Family Ministry Champions and Coffee Cup Conversations. The purpose of Family Ministry Systems is to come alongside your church to help you equip the body to develop the potential that already exists within your congregation, Dr. Wheeler explains. The goal is to train lay leadership to assist the pastor in reaching the needs of marriages and families. People are hurting and need someone who can lend a listening and supportive ear. There are many individuals within a congregation who are gifted with counseling and communication skills that are not being utilized. This leadership training will empower them to overcome the fears of one-on-one relationship building. You will be amazed to see what can happen when your people are set free to do the work of God, Dr. Wheeler adds. HOMECOMING The Homecoming ceremony took place on January 22nd in front of a packed house at the halftime of the men s basketball game. The candidates were; freshman Pilo Miranda-Troup (Arvada, CO) and Heather Thornburg (Potwin, KS), sophomores Matthew Newton (Friendswood, TX) and Leah Hill (Louisville, CO), juniors Eliot Hinshaw (Haviland, KS) and Elisha Weisner (Limon, CO) and seniors Jacob Newton (Friendswood, TX) and Amber Brown (Haviland, KS). The athlete candidates were Patric Garrison (Eldora, IA) and Ashley Colliatie (Bel Aire, KS). Leighton Hinshaw was the crown bearer and Audrey Bunce the flower girl. Pilo Miranda-Troup and Ashley Colliatie were crowned the 2011 Homecoming King and Queen. Fans were treated to two great Bear s basketball games. Both the men s and women s teams were winners in vital conference games. The Lady Bears defeated Central Christian College of the Bible 65-55, while the men s team won To end the day, the alumni laced them up. The athleticism may not have been what it once was, but players and fans had a great time reliving the old days. There were 19 alumni that participated in the game. In a close match, the white team came out on top.

3 BULLETIN FACULTY FOCUS: KEVIN MORTIMER 2011 Kevin Mortimer returns to Barclay College, this time on the other side of the classroom. It has been several years since he was a student at FBC, but now Kevin is thrilled to be back. Kevin states his reasons for returning as a sense of God s guiding and the thirst and hunger for knowledge. Ever the student, Kevin is continuing his own educational journey by applying for admission to a doctorate of philosophy program at the University of Birmingham, England. Kevin also attributes his return to the relationship he has fostered with president, Dr. Royce Frazier. Kevin said, Royce has been part of every ministry transitions in my life. Kevin brings a wealth of ministry experience to his classes. He has served as a youth pastor, senior pastor, church planter and Iowa yearly meeting superintendent. Right now he is thrilled to be where God wants him. In the classroom Kevin points to the merging of two of his passions, one, the content of scripture and church history and two, the people, students becoming versed in scripture. He referred to the creative dynamic of Barclay s learning environment. Currently, an adjunct professor, Kevin teaches three classes, Pentateuch, Introduction to Pastoral Ministry and Church Planting and Evangelism. Kevin s love for Barclay and students is evident in his devotion to spend part of his week in Haviland in class preparation and doctoral study, while his family remains in Iowa. Kevin feels that God is teaching him about growing in the rhythm of Sabbath rest, being attentive to God at all times, what God is doing in my life, and what He is doing in other lives that I encounter. Kevin feels this awareness is important to the whole of spiritual life, a growing awareness of God and sin which is the absence of God. We praise God for the resource of Godly teachers like Kevin. Pray for him as he instructs students and studies as a student himself, as well as his family. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: CASSI PHILLIPS Senior Cassi Phillips didn t have to come to far to Barclay. Originally from Wichita, Kansas, Cassi followed her older sister, although that was not her plan. Cassi said, I was going to pursue film school at another college, God didn t let me. Instead she came to Barclay and is majoring in missions. As she puts it, I feel called to serve God wherever I am at; whether that be overseas or not. Cassi has learned a lot in her time at Barclay College, not just in the classroom. I think I have learned more from being friends with my professors and living life with them, she said. Her experience at Barclay has helped transform her life in other ways, Barclay has had a huge impact on my life. I came here when I needed spiritual stability and I learned how to cultivate my own spiritual stability through classes, professors, friends and just living in this environment. Her plans after graduation are to follow the Lord s leading. Right now I feel God is leading me to pursue nursing as a career. She intends to return to Wichita to attend nursing school and after that she says, I know that God will show me the right way! Pray for Cassi as she finishes her studies at Barclay and continues to follow God s direction for her life.

4 2010 HOME COURT HOLDS TRUE FOR MEN The Barclay Bears will put the finishing touches on the month of January when they face NCTA on the 28th. Hockett Auditorium was the sight of six of the first seven games for the Bears to start the spring semester and featured 6 consecutive victories. They had won 10 games in a row stretching back to the fall semester, including victories over Hillsdale Free Will Baptist, Calvary Bible, Ozark Christian, St. Louis Christian, and Central Christian College of the Bible before losing at the hands of Hillsdale Free Will Baptist on January 25th. The Bears improved to 12-4 overall and 9-0 in MCCC play with three conference games remaining. The key to moving forward is Senior Joshua Sanchez being able to play on the road, like we do at home. January was a good month as far as wins and losses, but we still need to get better and improve. We re not finished yet, said Assistant Coach Ray Anderson. Senior Jeremiah Williams LADY BEARS TACKLE TOUGH 2nd SEMESTER SCHEDULE With a 6-5 record the Lady Bears are hoping to continue their winning ways in the second semester. After a first semester that saw the Lady Bears go 2-2, they started this semester 4-3. The Lady Bears had a great win over the 9th ranked Hillsdale College Lady Saints. Coach Lingafelter offered, "That game was incredible! The crowd was great, the ladies played great. We never trailed against this talented opponent, and every time they got close we would pull away from them." The next game was against conference rival Calvary Bible College and some valuable lessons were learned in a loss. Reflecting on that game Coach Lingafelter said; "I told the girls in the locker room that Calvary would come out and really go at us. The Hillsdale College win was great, but that game was over. I warned them against coming out thinking we would just walk all over them. When Calvary started out with a lead, I think they finally believed me. We out played them for 28 of the 40 minutes. Unfortunately, the first 12 were so bad, we could not dig out of the hole." But Coach Lingafelter did see a silver lining, "They fought back when teams in the past would have just accepted getting blown out. That was very encouraging, and I told them that. Plus, as with most people, you usually learn more by doing than having someone tell you. I told them not to take Calvary lightly, then they experienced what happens when you do. I think that is something they can draw from down the line. Was I disappointed that we lost to Calvary? Sure. Could it make us better down the line? I think so." The schedule this semester is a tough one but the Lady Bears have the talent to do very well. "With young talent you have to accept, to some degree, young mistakes. The encouraging thing is that the ladies do not seem to like losing. They work hard and they are open to the coaching that is needed to improve. At the end of the day these are 11 great women of God. They have really tried to balance that competitive fire with a humble spirit. I think Barclay College should be proud of these ladies."
