Executive Summary Unified communications can significantly streamline business communications by expediting business processes and boosting corporate responsiveness. However, to deliver this value, unified communications applications and services must be deployed on top of a converged IP network that provides carrier-class reliability, performance and security. Juniper Networks understands the unique demands unified communications places on the entire network infrastructure, especially the LAN. Consequently, Juniper designed the EX-series Ethernet switches with the High Availability (HA), quality of service (QoS) and security characteristics required to build a carrier-class converged IP network, within a framework of open and standards-based technologies. Juniper s commitment to standards means enterprises can deploy EX-series switches with the confidence they will interoperate with existing network and unified communications-based products, as well as planned purchases, providing investment protection while giving IT the flexibility to choose best-in-class solutions. Introduction Increasing numbers of enterprises are deploying unified communications applications and services, since they are impressed by the productivity gains and business efficiencies that unified communications can deliver. According to Forrester Research Inc., half of all enterprises in North America and Europe currently have a unified communications initiative underway * and 76 percent of European firms have either implemented or initiated IP telephony deployments. Unified communications represents a new class of applications and network services that take advantage of the rich multimedia and communications capabilities of a converged IP network. Many enterprises initially deployed a converged IP infrastructure to reduce the capital and operational expenses involved in maintaining separate data, voice and video networks. Yet, with the emergence of unified communications, enterprises are finding their converged infrastructure can provide considerable additional value as well. By integrating conferencing, instant messaging, contact center and other collaboration applications with communication services and technologies including IP telephony, , voice mail, video and presence, unified communications makes it easier for employees, customers and business partners to interact in real-time. Timely communications is especially critical for today s extended enterprise, which includes a geographically dispersed and mobile workforce encompassing contractors, partners and suppliers. By reducing delays in business communication, unified communications boosts corporate efficiency and responsiveness. Unified communications services and applications can expedite business processes ranging from customer support and sales to product development and financial planning. However, to deliver this value, unified communications requires a high-performance, highly available, and secure converged network infrastructure to support a diverse user community and traffic types, many of which are latency-sensitive and require more rigorous handling compared to data. * Source: Top Unified Communications Predictions for 2008 by Henry Dewing, Forrester Research, February 20, 2008 Source: The State of Enterprise VoIP and Unified Communications Adoption in Europe: 2007 by Phil Sayer, Forrester Research, December 6, 2007 Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc. 3

Unified Communications Overview Juniper Networks understands that unified communications environments place unique demands on the entire network infrastructure, from the LAN edge to the core and beyond to the wide area network (WAN). Consequently, Juniper has optimized its portfolio of high-performance switches, routers, security and WAN optimization platforms to support unified communications applications and services. For example, Juniper s full set of security products, which includes firewalls, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), Security Threat Response Manager (STRM), SSL VPN platforms, 802.1X network access security products and the Unified Access Control (UAC) solution, all include voice over IP (VoIP)- specific feature sets. As a result, enterprises can more easily deploy VoIP on a single IP infrastructure. In addition, Juniper has certified its products to work with VoIP and unified communications solutions from vendors such as Avaya, Cisco, Polycom, Microsoft and others, and has integrated Avaya Gateway capabilities in its J-series routers. In addition, the Juniper WX/WXC WAN application and acceleration platforms ensure consistent LAN-like performance for unified communications applications across the WAN by prioritizing and creating bandwidth for VoIP and other unified communications traffic. This document focuses on the requirements for the LAN portion of a carrier-class unified communications network and how the Juniper Networks EX-series Ethernet switches address those requirements. With the EX 3200, EX 4200 and EX 8200 series switch product lines, enterprises can build the converged LAN infrastructure needed to support carrier-class unified communications. 4 Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc.
LAN Infrastructure Requirements for Unified Communications Having the right network infrastructure is a critical component of a successful unified communications deployment. To effectively support unified communications across the LAN, Ethernet switches must have the following characteristics. Open, Standards-based Technologies: Like other network-based applications and services, unified communications consists of a set of services and applications that operate across a network. By selecting unified communications-enabled infrastructure products such as LAN switches that support open standards, enterprises have the flexibility to choose best-of-breed voice, video, and other unified communications solutions. Support within the network operating system for standards such as the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), LLDP-Media Endpoint Discovery (LLDP-MED) and 802.1af ensures compatibility and boosts interoperability between a wide range of devices from various unified communications suppliers. Likewise, support for industry-standard Class 3 Power over Ethernet (PoE) ensures a full 15.4 watts per port for IP-enabled devices such as VoIP phones, security cameras and other devices. Support for PoE enables a device such as a switch to provide the necessary power for these IP-enabled devices without requiring additional external power sources. By selecting LAN switches with an open, standards-based network operating system, enterprises can build a best-in-class converged network infrastructure that interoperates with existing VoIP and unified communications systems as well as other network gear, avoiding vendor lock-in and proprietary protocols. Carrier-Class Reliability: Enterprises demand a higher level of availability for a converged infrastructure carrying the data, voice, video, messaging and other real-time communications components of unified communications than previously allowed in data-only networks. With multiple traffic types converged onto a single LAN infrastructure, network downtime affects numerous applications and services including telephony, which magnifies productivity losses. The LAN must be as highly reliable and available as the carrier s network in order to support unified communications. Effective End-to-End QoS: Users of unified communications applications expect excellent voice and video quality while simultaneously accessing applications and data, using instant messaging and other applications. To meet user expectations and deliver full value to the enterprise, unified communications-based services and applications must have consistent and predictable performance. Achieving this requires that a common set of robust QoS mechanisms be supported end-to-end across the LAN. Consequently, the QoS mechanisms on edge switches need to be as granular as those deployed in the aggregation layer and core, and across the WAN. Integrated Security Services: Given the diversity of users and devices accessing unified communications applications, LAN switches must provide integrated security services. To protect the converged infrastructure from unauthorized users and devices, LAN switches must support network access control based on open standards, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.1X and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). In addition, LAN switches must be capable of participating in policy architecture to ensure security is consistently applied. For example, edge switches must have the ability to identify and authenticate users and devices such as IP phones and enforce the appropriate security and access controls based on policies provisioned by a policy server. 6 The LAN infrastructure also needs to provide protection against malicious attacks. LAN switches in critical locations such as the data center must protect against denial of service (DoS) and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. All LAN switches should have a hardened modular network operating system where non-essential tools, utilities and other system administration options have been removed to prevent intrusion by hackers. The modularity of the operating system must allow functions to run in protected memory to ensure consistent operation during an attack, as well as enable the network administrator to shut down and restart functions without forcing a system-level restart of the entire networking device. Juniper EX-series Switches Underpin Carrier-Class Unified Communications Juniper Networks designed the EX-series Ethernet switches to support a highly available, high-performance and secure converged network infrastructure needed to deliver carrier-class unified communications services and applications. Juniper s EX-series switches include the EX 3200 series standalone platforms that are intended for access and branch deployments; the EX 4200 series switches with Virtual Chassis technology, which are ideal for access and aggregation-layer deployments as well as larger remote offices seeking a scalable solution; and the EX 8200 series switches, a modular family designed for the network core and large data centers. EX 8216 EX 8208 EX 3200 EX Series 3200 Series EX 4200 EX Series 4200 EX Series 4200 EX Series 4200 EX Series 4200 Series Figure 2. EX-series Ethernet Switches from Juniper Networks The Juniper EX-series switches have been optimized for their role in the network while sharing common software and management tools. All EX-series switches run JUNOS software, a modular operating system that delivers consistent control plane features across the entire Juniper Networks routing, switching and security product lines. As next-generation Ethernet switches designed for today s converged network environment, the Juniper EX-series switches easily meet the requirements for a unified communications-enabled LAN infrastructure. Standards-based Flexibility By delivering open, standards-based LAN switches and other network devices, Juniper Networks gives enterprises a safe investment choice. With a Juniper infrastructure, enterprises have the flexibility to buy best-of-breed VoIP and video systems, along with other unified communications services and applications, without concern for vendor lock-in or the need to run proprietary protocols. Juniper s commitment to standards also means enterprises can leverage their existing unified communications hardware and software as well as other existing infrastructure. 6 Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc.
Juniper has implemented a full range of Layer 2 and Layer 3 standards on the EX-series switches, from Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and Rapid STP to OSPF, RIP and BGP routing protocols. The EX-series switches also support standard technologies for High Availability (HA), QoS and security, each of which is detailed in the respective sections below. In addition, Juniper EX-series switches deliver key standards for unified communications environments, including PoE, LLDP and LLDP-MED. LLDP and LLDP-MED enable Ethernet endpoints and network devices to identify the attributes and capabilities of each, which allows for plug-and-play provisioning of IP phones. Robust and flexible PoE support is essential for access switches. Traditional stackable switches typically take an all-or-nothing approach to PoE, delivering power on all ports or none at all. When PoE is offered, traditional switches also require a separate power source and separate management software to deliver the necessary power and control the current flow. In contrast, the Juniper EX 3200 and EX 4200 series switches, with unshielded twisted pair (UTP) ports, offer both full and partial IEEE 802.3af standards-based Class 3 PoE options, delivering a full 15.4 watts on each PoE port. For example, on the EX 4200 series switches customers can select switches offering eight, 24, or 48 PoE ports per platform, enabling them to pay only for the PoE support they need. The Juniper EX-series PoE implementation is more efficient than other vendors implementations. The power supply on an EX-series switch is sufficient to power the switch and all PoE ports, eliminating the need for an additional power supply. The EX-series switches flexible PoE options make it easy for enterprises to connect and power a variety of IP-enabled devices and unified communications systems over a converged network including VoIP phones, videoconferencing systems, closed circuit television systems, badge readers, telemetry centers and automation equipment. To ease the deployment of converged networks and unified communications technologies, the Juniper EX 3200 and EX 4200 series switches support LLDP also known as IEEE 802.1AB and its extension, LLDP-MED. Using LLDP and LLDP-MED, Juniper EX-series switches can automatically identify VoIP phones, security cameras and other endpoints, and determine their power requirements. LLDP-MED automatically discovers a device s location and, in the case of VoIP, provides enhanced 911 (E911) services and the power attributes of PoE endpoints. LLDP-MED also provisions LAN policies including virtual LAN (VLAN) assignment and QoS settings. Voice (VLAN 1) EX-series Data (VLAN 2) PC LLDP-MED VoIP Phone Figure 3. LLDP and LLDP-MED Enable the EX-series Switches to Identify VoIP and Other IP-enabled Devices and Determine Their Power Requirement Because the LLDP and LLDP-MED protocols are industry standards, Juniper EX-series switches can interoperate with end nodes from multiple vendors. This enables enterprises to freely choose best-of-breed VoIP and other endpoint solutions, rather than being locked into turnkey solutions provided by the switch vendor. Carrier-Class Reliability As enterprises build out a converged infrastructure to support unified communications applications and services such as VoIP, it s important to understand that the entire business operation depends on that infrastructure. Therefore, any network failure will affect all systems including data, voice, video, messaging and even building automation if this has been added to the converged infrastructure. Consequently, LAN switches must deliver a much higher level of availability and resiliency than ever before. Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc. 7
Juniper EX-series switches are carrier-class platforms designed with device-level, network-level and operational HA characteristics. For example, the EX 4200 series switches feature internal redundant load-sharing power supplies, as well as redundant fans and field-replaceable fan trays. Both the power supplies and fan trays are hot swappable. Each fan tray includes three fans, any two of which can provide sufficient cooling to ensure continuous switch operation. Juniper Virtual Chassis technology allows up to 10 individual EX 4200 series switches to be interconnected as a single logical system, providing chassis-level failover capabilities in a stackable form factor. With its pay-as-you-grow scalability, the Juniper EX 4200 series switches make it economically feasible to deploy HA switching in areas where it may have been cost-prohibitive or physically impossible before, such as the access layer. Each EX 4200 series switch in a Virtual Chassis configuration includes a Routing Engine, so when two or more EX 4200 series switches are deployed using the Virtual Chassis technology, they offer the same Routing Engine redundancy features as any chassis-based Juniper router, including graceful Routing Engine switchover (GRES) for hitless failover. The GRES feature ensures that Layer 2 forwarding and Layer 3 routing control passes seamlessly from the master to the backup Routing Engine in the event of a master Routing Engine failure. Master RE Backup RE EX 4200 Series EX 4200 Series Graceful Route Engine Switchover (GRES) for hitless failovers EX 4200 Series EX 4200 Series EX 4200 Series Figure 4. GRES Ensures a Smooth and Seamless Transfer of Control Plane Functions Following a Master Routing Engine Failure in a Virtual Chassis Configuration The Juniper EX 3200 series switches also have HA characteristics not typically found in standalone platforms. At the device hardware level, each EX 3200 series switch has a field-replaceable internal power supply and fan. For HA applications, the EX 3200 series switches can be configured with an external redundant power supply, making the internal power supply hot-swappable. All EX-series switches can be easily deployed in a fully redundant configuration using the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). VRRP allows switches on the same subnet to seamlessly hand off routing functions and, in the event of a fault, any back-up switch will automatically take over for the primary switch in its virtual router group. 8 Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc.
JUNOS Software Benefits Beyond this hardware component redundancy, all EX-series switches benefit from the JUNOS software s HA characteristics. One key feature is the modular design of the JUNOS software, which provides protected areas in memory for the independent operation of each software module. For example, each protocol process runs in its own protected memory space so that a failure of one module won t disrupt any others. The JUNOS software automatically restarts a failed module without having to reboot the entire switch. JUNOS software also features dedicated resources for routing, switching and packet forwarding that ensure predictable performance and stable device operation as new services are activated within a device. Daemon 1 Daemon 2 Daemon 3 Daemon n Kernel Packet Forwarding Physical Interfaces Figure 5. The JUNOS Software Modular Architecture Because all Juniper switches run the same version of JUNOS software, each platform benefits from the same high level of network and operational availability. At the network level, Juniper EX-series switches support path availability and resiliency through robust implementations of standard switching and routing protocols, including IEEE 802.3ad link aggregation, Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) (802.1w), OSPF, BGP, RIP, and IS-IS. At Layer 2, RSTP is faster than STP at establishing loop-free paths throughout the network when a backup link takes over. As an alternative to STP for access-layer switches that are dual-homed to two distribution switches, the Juniper EX-series switches also offer the redundant trunk group feature, which provides a fast and simple failover mechanism without the complexity of STP. Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc. 9
Standard Layer 3 protocols such as OSPF provide the fastest recovery from link failures and are more scalable than Layer 2 protocols. To improve further on Layer 3 protocol convergence times, Juniper supports the Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) protocol, which provides rapid detection of link, interface, tunnel and peer failures. Non-stop bridging and routing mechanisms such as BFD enhance the resiliency characteristics of network protocols by preventing service interruptions during the brief period when the backup Routing Engine takes over for a failed Routing Engine. Juniper EX-series switches support BFD for all its supported bridging and routing protocols. Juniper Networks boosts operational availability for the EX-series Ethernet switches and its entire infrastructure product line by supporting JUNOS software across all platforms. Having a single operating system implementation greatly simplifies new feature deployment, software upgrades and other network modifications. By delivering a consistent set of services and features in a single release train, as well as a consistent management interface and tool set, Juniper Networks reduces the learning curve for operators and minimizes user errors, which is a major source of network downtime. (For more information, see the Juniper Networks white paper Building a Highly-Available Enterprise Network with Juniper Networks EX-series Switches. ) Granular End-to-End QoS Juniper EX-series switches uniformly deliver the same set of QoS capabilities on all ports, ensuring predictable application performance across the entire LAN and onto the WAN. With a Juniper converged infrastructure, enterprises can deploy unified communications knowing that these applications, as well as business-critical applications, network management information, building automation and other traffic types, will get the resources they need for optimal operation. All EX-series switches provide eight hardware-based class of service (CoS) queues on every port, as well as a common set of queuing, traffic shaping and congestion management algorithms. With these mechanisms, enterprises can accommodate numerous classes of traffic and define very granular QoS policies. EX-series High-priority Voice Traffic Low-priority Voice Traffic PC VoIP Phone Figure 6. EX-series Switches Recognize and Enforce QoS Markings for Up to Eight Traffic Queues Per Port How an individual traffic flow is handled depends on its markings and associated QoS policies. EX-series switches can apply standard IEEE 802.1p markings at Layer 2 and IETF Differentiated Services code point (DSCP) or IP precedence markings at Layer 3. An EX-series switch will identify incoming traffic, match it against a QoS policy list, and mark it for appropriate handling by subsequent network devices. Beyond these standard marking techniques, Juniper gives enterprises the flexibility to classify and mark traffic based on its ingress port, IP or MAC address, VLAN tag, TCP/ UDP port number, or any combination of these attributes. At each hop on the LAN, EX-series switches queue and service traffic based on the priority setting and will constrain an endpoint to a maximum bandwidth if indicated. For example, as enterprises roll out unified communications, IT can provide medium priority handling for instant messaging (IM) and assign a low priority for voic . Or when an 802.1X-enabled IP phone authenticates to the network, an EX-series switch can give highest priority handling to traffic on that particular switch port, marking the traffic and putting it into a strict priority queue and guaranteeing it up to 1 Mbps of bandwidth. Whereas many vendors support only one priority queue per port, Juniper EX-series switches allow IT to define multiple priority queues per port to ensure voice and video-enabled applications are handled properly. 10 Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc.
Because each EX-series switch runs the same JUNOS software, QoS features supported in JUNOS software such as rate limiting, traffic marking and policing for congestion control, and tail drop for congestion avoidance are consistent across all switch platforms. Likewise, Juniper Networks provides the same set of tools for configuring and managing QoS capabilities on all EX-series switches. To further simplify QoS implementation, Juniper s J-Web management system provides templates that automatically configure QoS, security and other parameters based on the type of device connected to an EX-series switch port. QoS-specific templates are included in J-Web, an embedded device management tool provided with each EX-series switch, as well as through the command-line interface (CLI) using Juniper s EZQoS feature. Preconfigured profiles are available for a desktop port, desktop plus IP phone port, wireless access point port, routed uplink port and Layer 2 uplink port. For example, by using J-Web, IT can configure an EX-series switch port for VoIP simply by selecting the Desktop + IP phone template and applying it to the appropriate port(s). EZQoS similarly abstracts the details of QoS configuration, enabling IT to set up an IP phone with one or two commands, which eliminates the need for staff to learn the intricacies of QoS mechanisms. Customers also have the option to automate the QoS configuration using JUNOS software scripts. For example, IT can define a script that s activated when LLDP detects an IP phone on an EX-series switch port and the script would automatically configure the EZQoS CLI on the port where the IP phone was discovered, reducing operations overhead and the risk of configuration errors. Figure 7. J-Web Desktop + IP Phone Screen In addition, EX-series switches can operate as enforcement points for QoS policies defined in policy servers, such as the Juniper Infranet Controller (IC). Part of the Juniper UAC solution, the IC enables IT to define identity-based QoS policies and then pushes these policies to EX-series switches to activate QoS access control lists (ACLs). QoS policies are applied dynamically, per user or per device session, regardless of the user s or device s location or the type of endpoint a user might use to access the network (for instance, a desktop computer, laptop or PDA). Copyright 2008, Juniper Networks, Inc. 11
By delivering the same set of granular QoS mechanisms across its EX-series Ethernet switches, Juniper Networks enables enterprises to build a converged LAN infrastructure that provides consistent, end-to-end QoS treatment. As a result, all enterprise applications, including newly deployed unified communications applications, get the resources they need for optimal performance. (For more information, read the Juniper Networks white paper Juniper EX-series Ethernet Switches: QoS-Enabling the Enterprise. ) Integrated Security Services The EX-series Ethernet switches provide network access control services and operate in conjunction with the full line of Juniper firewalls, intrusion prevention products, Security Threat Response Manager (STRM), SSL VPN platforms and UAC solution to secure the unified communications-enabled infrastructure from end to end. All EX-series switches support the IEEE 802.1X standard for port-based network access control as well as the EAP standard. The 802.lX standard ensures interoperability between 802.1X-compliant clients running on endpoints, switches and network access control solutions, allowing enterprises to leverage their existing infrastructure, including RADIUS and back-end identity stores. In addition, by supporting 802.1X, Juniper EX-series switches can act as enforcement points for any standards-based policy server, such as the Juniper IC. EAP allows for more flexible, expandable network access and authorization controls beyond basic user/device authentication. Leveraging EAP, Juniper EX-series switches can apply access controls based on additional information from users and their devices, such as endpoint security and posture validation. The Juniper IC allows enterprises to centrally define and manage security policies, which are then enforced by specific Juniper platforms. Operating at the network edge, the EX 3200 and EX 4200 series switches permit or deny network access and control traffic based on predefined policies, with every switch port acting as an enforcement point. For example, the EX-series switches can limit access based on user authentication status, endpoint posture compliance and user/device role. When used with the Juniper IC, EX-series access switches can take the following enforcement actions: admission control, VLAN assignment, policy-based routing, traffic mirroring, bandwidth limiting, traffic marking, and traffic scheduling and prioritization. 13 The EX 8200 series switches include integrated security features to guard against intruders and other external threats, such as DDoS attacks. Using behavioral threat detection algorithms, the EX 8200 series switches are also capable of identifying and closing half-open sessions, which is key to defending against zero-day attacks for which no signature exists. These hardware-based security features reduce disruptions due to malicious activity. In addition, the EX-series switches benefit from running JUNOS software, which is a hardened operating system. Juniper EX-series switches play a critical role in overall network security, maximizing uptime for unified communications applications and services. Conclusion Unified communications can facilitate business processes and expedite decision making across the extended enterprise. However, unified communications applications and services place different demands on the LAN than traditional data applications. To perform to user expectations, realtime traffic such as voice, video conferencing, real-time collaboration and IM requires a converged infrastructure with consistent QoS end to end. As enterprises build-out converged infrastructures and adopt unified communications, the need for highly available network devices becomes critical to minimizing the ripple effect of any downtime. Likewise, as enterprises extend unified communications services and applications to employees, partners and other parties in the extended enterprise, they need to make sure all portions of their converged infrastructure, including the LAN, provide the security services needed to protect business operations and resources. Juniper Networks designed its next-generation EX-series Ethernet switches with the QoS, HA and security characteristics needed to build a converged LAN infrastructure capable of supporting carrier-class unified communications. Juniper s commitment to implementing open and standard technologies provides enterprises with flexibility and investment protection. Enterprises can deploy Juniper EX-series switches with confidence that they will interoperate with existing network and unified communications-based products and planned purchases, giving IT the flexibility to choose best-in-class solutions. With the EX-series switches, Juniper is simultaneously advancing the fundamentals and economics of networking by delivering high-performance Ethernet switches with the features needed to support carrier-class unified communications today and beyond.
