Master of Science In INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM PROGRAM STATEMENT GUIDELINES PROGRAM STATEMENT All IST students are required to meet with their appointed faculty advisor and fill out a program statement before the end of their first semester after formal admission as a degree candidate. This becomes an approved program of study between the student and the University that defines their requirements for graduation. Once the program statement is complete, changes can be accommodated. However, these changes should be approved by the faculty advisor and the program director in advance and must be noted on a revised program statement. It is the students responsibility to insure that an accurate, current program statement is on file in the MS-IST office. Students who deviate from their current program statements on file in the MS-IST office may encounter hold registrations and delay or prevent their graduation from the program. ACADEMIC ADVISORS You have been assigned a Faculty Advisor upon admission to the program. Please follow that assignment unless otherwise instructed. Although all faculty are glad to provide advice, arbitrary advisor switching places an unfair load on some faculty. If you are having trouble contacting your advisor, please contact the Information Systems Technology Program Office at (Foggy Bottom) or (Ashburn). Advisors Phone Program Prof. Mary Granger [email protected] (202) Foggy Bottom Prof. Wendy Duan [email protected] (202) Foggy Bottom Mr. Sami Nagy [email protected] (202) Foggy Bottom PROGRAM PLANNING OVERVIEW Filling out your program statement is fairly straightforward, if you follow these steps: 1) Get a Blank Program Statement form from the website or from the MSIST Office (202) ) Fill out the student information section. 3) Determine the status of your foundation course requirements. 4) Select a track. 5) Choose electives within your track. 6) Plan your schedule for completing your classes. 7) Sign your Program Statement 8) Reread the Key Points to Remember at the end of this document.
If you vary from your Program Statement by taking different electives, you must fill out a new Program Statement and have it signed by your advisor. STEP ONE: FILL OUT THE STUDENT INFORMATION SECTION The George Washington University SCHOOL OF BUSINESS MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY Original Revised Student Name (Please Print) Student ID Number (GWID) Date Phone Numbers: (Day) (Evening) Mailing Address: Street City State Zip Full Part Advisor Major Field Semester Admitted Campus Time Time NOTE: This form must be completed and approved by your designated faculty advisor. Programming FC2. Database Foundation courses insure that all students are sufficiently prepared for graduate level courses. Students are admitted to the degree program with diverse academic backgrounds and a variety of work and professional experience. The foundation courses level the knowledge base for entering students and afford a richer classroom experience. It is valuable, but not a requirement, that foundation courses be satisfied prior to the beginning of formal graduate studies, however you will not be able to enroll in some courses without completion of the foundation courses. If you require foundation courses, it is mandatory that you complete them during your first year. Once it has
been determined that foundation courses are required, they become part of your program of study and MUST be completed in your first year in the program. You will not be able to enroll in some core courses until you complete the foundation courses. Your faculty advisor will provide guidance on scheduling these foundation courses. Waiving Foundation Courses Foundation Courses may be waived based on prior academic coursework provided a grade of B or better was obtained. The course must be from an appropriately accredited academic institution. Professional seminars and other nonacademic courses are not adequate. However, students who have prior experience in these areas may choose to waive foundation courses by taking waiver examinations. See Master of Science in Information Systems Technology Foundation courses Waiver Examinations for more information. Waiver examinations must be taken during the student s first semester. STEP THREE: FOUNDATION COURSES CHART Foundation Courses Waiver Semester Grade [Y] [N] [Y] [N] Programming The programming foundation course can be waived with a one semester academic course in a programming language such as Visual Basic, C, C++, Java or Pascal. The course grade must be a B or better. Students who have programming experience but no academic training may take the programming waiver examination during their first semester. Students who cannot satisfy this Foundation Course through previous course work or by taking the waiver examination must take an appropriate programming course such as ISTM 3119 at GWU, or any other course equivalent in another Institution. Prior registration in another Institution, you faculty advisor will have to approve course desired. Please note that after completion of course you must request official transcripts to your program office. This portion will be monitored by the ISTM administrator advisor and will be updated upon receive official transcripts. Database the database Foundation Course may be waived with a one semester academic course in database in which the student received a grade of B or better. Students who have prior experience in database may take the database waiver examination during their first semester. Students who cannot satisfy this Foundation Course through previous course work or a waiver examination must take an appropriate database course such as ISTM4121, at GWU, or any other course equivalent in another Institution. Prior registration in another Institution, you faculty advisor will have to approve course desired. Please note that after completion of course you must request official transcripts to your program office. This portion will be monitored by the ISTM administrator advisor and will be updated upon receive official transcripts. STEP FOUR: WAIVER PROCEDURES UNDERSTANDING AGREEMENT
Please read and initial the following: Waiver exams are available only in the first semester of the program Initialing this portion of the program statement will reflect the understanding of the terms and regulations for the waivers of foundation courses in the MSIST program. Once again, please note that waiver exams are available only in your first semester in the program. If you fail the waiver, you will have to take a course to meet the foundation requirement. STEP FIVE: OFFICE USE ONLY Office use only: This portion will be used for special notification by your Faculty or administrator advisor. STEP SIX: CORE COURSES Core Courses Course Semester Grade ISTM 6201 ISTM 6202*4 ISTM6 203 ISTM 6204 ISTM 6205*4 ISTM 6206 ISTM 6207 ISTM The MSIST program consist of 8 core (or required) courses and 3 elective courses. In this section, identify the semester and year you plan to take each of the core courses by writing it in the Semester column. If you are submitting a revised program statement, you may have grades for courses. Please enter them in the Grade column. Please note that the following core courses require completion of foundation courses before you can register for them: ISTM 6202 requires FC2 (Database), and ISTM 6205 requires FC1 (Programming). ISTM6210 is a capstone course, which must be scheduled in your final semester and after all core courses are completed. In order to get familiar not only with the number corresponding to your classes, as follows the title for each course. ISTM 6201: Information Systems Development ISTM 6202*: Relational Databases
ISTM 6203: Telecommunication and Enterprise Network ISTM 6204: Information Technology Project Management ISTM 6205*: Internet Computing ISTM 6206: Information Systems Security ISTM 6207: Information Resource Management ISTM : Design of Online Systems (capstone course must be taken at your last semester) STEP SEVEN: SELECT TRACK Track (Check One) Management 1 Technical 2 Combination 3 Each student must choose a major field from the three fields shown above. These fields are available at Foggy Bottom and Ashburn. The Management track combines management theory with information systems technology and is appropriate for students who are concerned equally with management and technology. The Technical track is the most technical track and is appropriate for students who are interested in developing strong technical skills with a focus on developing information systems. STEP EIGTH: ELECTIVE COURSES Elective Courses Course Semester Grade Internship 5 Student must indicate course, when will be taken. If is a revise program statement, semester and grade should be posted. Intership 5 : This portion applies to the Five Year Program Students BBA/MSIST, not for traditional program. STEP NINE: CHOSSING ELECTIVE Management 1: Choose from Management Electives such us: ISTM 6221:Electronic Business
ISTM 6222: IS/IT Strategy (new) ISTM 6223: Technology Entrepreneurship ISTM 6224: Management of Technology and Innovation ISTM 6225: Enterprise Architecture (new) Technical 2: Choose from Technical Electives ISTM 6211*: Data Warehousing/OLAP ISTM 6213: Enterprise Web and Database Applications ISTM 6214: Higher Level Languages ISTM 6215: Human Computer Interaction Combination 3: Choose any electives from Management or Technical options. STEP TEN: SIGNATURES Student s Signature Date Advisor s Signature Date Program Director s Signature Date Once the student and advisor agree on the Program Statement, the student should sign it and give it to his or her faculty advisor. The faculty advisor will sign the statement and pass it on to the program director for final review. After the program director signs the program statement, a copy will be mailed back to the student at the address on the statement. POINTS TO REMEMBER Here are a few key points to keep in mind as you develop and carry out your program plan: 1) Waiver examinations must be taken by the end of the student s first semester in the program. After that, they are no longer an option. 2) Foundation Courses MUST be taken during the first year of the student s program. If Foundation Courses are not completed during the first year, students will not be able to enroll in some graduate courses (see above). Once it has been determined that foundation courses are required, they become part of your program of study and enrolling into some graduate courses will be prohibited. 3) Your program statement must be filled out and approved by the end of your first semester in the program. Any changes in your elective courses require a new program statement to be filled out and approved by your advisor
