1 Midwest CUPA-HR Newsletter Spring/Summer, MWR Annual Conference Targets Innovation increase prestige and academic excellence in colleges and universities nation-wide. The 2010 Midwest CUPA-HR Conference, held in Minneapolis on April 11-14, was the perfect place for conference participants to set their sights on innovation and tackle the challenges of how to continue to reinvent the way we, as HR professionals, bring value to our institutions. Margaret Morford with MWR Chair Gary Johnson Tuesday s keynoter, Margaret Morford, president of The HR Edge, Inc., spoke about Creative Business Thinking for Success When Pigs Fly. Morford emphasized the importance of innovation for organizations that want to compete successfully in today s business environment. She encouraged participants to shift their mindset and learn to think in ways they never thought possible. Keynoter Gardner Campbell, with Toni Block, TIAA-CREF and Gary Johnson, Chair, MWR Kicking off the conference was a timely keynote address by Gardner Campbell, Director of the Academy for Teaching and Learning at Baylor University. Campbell s address was entitled From Memex to YouTube: How Information and Communication Technologies are Transforming 21 st -Century Higher Education. Campbell explored Web 2.0 in higher education, and suggested ways that new technologies could On Wednesday, participants heard a more sobering presentation from Nick and Carolyn Ryberg, founders of Ethos-One Consulting, entitled A Cautionary Tale Lessons Learned and Business Ethics. The presentation was based on the experiences of the Rybergs, with a focus on where things went wrong, the experience of facing federal prosecution and incarceration, renewal, redemption, and key lessons learned. The presentation provided a warning about crossing the line of unethical behavior, the likely consequences of doing so, 1 of 6
2 and key lessons learned by two individuals with real-life experience. In addition to the keynote addresses, participants were able to participate in thirty-two (32) concurrent session presentations as well as take advantage of several networking opportunities, including an evening at the Mill City Museum, built on the ruins of what was once the world s largest flour mill. With special activities, including a movie, elevator rides to re-live the workings of the mill, and baking brownies from scratch, the Mill City Museum was a sure hit. The MWR thanks its Mary Ann Wersch Premier Partners TIAA-CREF, Sibson Consulting, A Division of Segal, VALIC, and ING and its Distinguished Partners Aetna, Fidelity Investments, Standard Insurance, and Diversified Investment Advisors for providing such generous support for the conference.
