1 Get the Android SDK The Android SDK provides you the API libraries and developer tools necessary to build, test, and debug apps for Android. The ADT bundle includes the essential Android SDK components and a version of the Eclipse IDE with built-in ADT (Android Developer Tools) to streamline your Android app development. 2 Development for Android using Processing Due to significant SDK changes by Google, Processing 2.0a7 (and later) requires Android SDK Tools revision 20 (or later). Later versions of Google's tools may break this release of Processing. Note that due to major changes by Google to the Android dev tools, Android mode in older versions of Processing do not work. For best results, use the latest version of Processing on the download page. Android Mode To build for Android, select Android from the dropdown box in the toolbar (by default it reads Standard ). This places the current editor window into Android mode. To show you that you have now entered a new world, the window will appear green. The Run and Export features change a bit in Android mode: Run in Emulator - preprocess the current sketch, create an Android project, and run (debug) it in the Android emulator. Run on Device - the same as Run, but run on a device (phone) that's attached by USB. Export Android Project - creates an 'android' folder that contains the files necessary to build an APK using Ant. Export Signed Package - same as export, but creates a signed version of the 'release' build for the market. (not yet implemented, as of Processing 2.0 Beta 8) Running on a Device Before testing your sketch on your device, you must:

3 Turn on "USB Debugging" on your device - this process varies by device and which version of the OS you have installed. Try one of the following: o Menu Applications Development, then enable USB debugging If you are running Windows or Linux, you need to read Google's documentation at and install a special USB driver. Bugs and Other Issues A list of known bugs, sorted by priority, can be found at Using Eclipse in Conjunction with Processing for Development Note: You should only use Eclipse for Android development if you've already spent time learning how to develop Android applications using Eclipse (separately from Processing), and want to make use of the Processing core library. Android development in Eclipse is significantly more difficult than desktop Processing/Java development with Eclipse. Some tips: The size() method operates differently on Android. If no size() method is used, then the sketch is opened and uses the entire display. Use the width and height variables to get the size of the display that's available to you. Then, make calculations in your sketch based on how those are set. I if the phone/device is rotated while the sketch is running, the sketch will reset, and the width and height updated. Instead of a 'data' folder, use the 'assets' folder. If you're converting a Processing project, rename your data folder to assets. Or if you have files you'd like to get at with loadstrings(), put them in the assets folder. Step 1. Download and install Eclipse The ADT bundle, provided by Google, includes the essential Android SDK components and a version of the Eclipse IDE with built-in ADT (Android Developer Tools) to streamline your Android app development. 4 Step 2. Create a new project. Open Eclipse. If you see a Welcome screen, go ahead and close it. Then go to FILE --> NEW PROJECT and select "Java Project." Click next. Enter your project name and select "Finish." Step 3. Import the Processing libraries Eclipse doesn't know anything about Processing so we'll have to go and get the Processing libraries ourselves. One way to do this is by pointing Eclipse to Processing's "core library" directory, however, it's sometimes a good idea to copy the necessary Processing files into the project folder itself so that everything stays together. Go to: FILE --> IMPORT --> GENERAL --> FILE SYSTEM. Click next. Click browse and find the Processing application. On Windows you will then want to look inside the directory called "lib". Click "finish." You should now see "core.jar" listed under your project in the package explorer. Right-click on the file and select: BUILD PATH --> ADD TO BUILD PATH. The "core.jar" file should now appear with a jar icon. (Note this right-click option will only show up in the "Package Explorer." If you are in the "Project Explorer" or some other view, switch by going to WINDOW --> SHOW VIEW --> PACKAGE EXPLORER.) Step 4. Create a class and write your code! Go to: FILE --> NEW --> CLASS Enter in a class name (ex. MyProcessingSketch) and click finish. After selecting finish, you'll see the following code: public class MyProcessingSketch {

5 Eclipse is being nice and filling in the class definition for us. Thank you Eclipse! Now, if we want this class to be a Processing sketch, we've got to add some code: Import the core Processing library: "import processing.core.*;" Extend PApplet. PApplet is the parent Processing class that allows us to have access to all the Processing goodies. Run! Go to: RUN --> RUN AS --> JAVA APPLET For most things, you are often going to want to run your code as a Java Application (rather than applet) and turn on Processing's present mode. You can do this by adding a main() function to your code. public static void main(string args[]) { PApplet.main(new String[] { "--present", "MyProcessingSketch" ); Note that the String "MyProcessingSketch" must match the name of your class (and if it is in a package, should include the package, i.e. packagename.myprocessingsketch). Once you've added the main() function, you can select: RUN --> RUN AS --> JAVA APPLICATION
