I wish to thank my supervisors, Dr. Heather Ballard and Dr. J-P Bourreau for their guidance and support during my years at the University of Hong Kong. I am grateful to Dr Ballard for providing invaluable insights, timely encouragement as well as guidance balanced by the freedom to express myself through this work. She has been of invaluable assistance during the writing of my thesis. I especially appreciate her thoroughness in critiquing ideas and writing of this thesis. The work described in this thesis depended upon the inspiration and continual support of Professor David Allen of the University of Sydney.
