LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS MIDDLE SCHOOL Århus Kommune Børn og Unge
YOU ARE A CO-PLAYER IN YOUR CHILD S LANGUAGE- AND READING DEVELOPMENT
LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 3 Did you know that children develop their reading abilities throughout their schooling? children at this age typically learn ten new words a day? reading creates a larger vocabulary? the size of the vocabulary bears significance in terms of how well you understand what you are reading? children with a small vocabulary can learn to read, but they often have trouble understanding what they are reading? trouble with reading comprehension will often not be evident until middle school?
4 LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY SPEAK, READ AND WRITE WITH YOUR CHILD As a parent you play an ongoing important part in your child s language- and reading development. Set aside time and pay attention to conversations with your child. Support your child in learning about different things. Talk about what you see on TV, hear on the radio, read in books, in the paper or online Point out the different opportunities your child has to read and write. Show interest in your child s independent reading and writing. Pay attention to your child s schooling.
LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 5 READING The school bears the responsibility for teaching reading parents bear the responsibility for supporting the child s reading abilities. You can support your child s ongoing reading development by ensuring that there is time and room for reading every day. Read out loud also when your child grows older. Daily reading in the home increases your child s benefit from all subjects taught in school. Pay attention to what your child is interested in and show the child where reading material can be found.
6 LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY READING AND UNDERSTANDING It is important that your child understands the contents of the text when reading. You can for instance support your child s reading comprehension by asking about the contents of what the child is reading paying attention to if the child understand the texts it is reading encouraging your child to seek help when choosing reading material contacting your child s Danish teacher if you have doubts about how you support your child in the best way as the parent
LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 7 READING ACTIVITIES All children must be encouraged to read a lot. It is important that the child realizes that it can have positive experiences and obtain knowledge from books, magazines and digital media. It is important that your child continues to have the desire and feels joy- related to reading. Do not correct your child when it is reading out loud only if the reading is disturbing to the comprehension. Your child s reading will develop through a variety of texts: comics non-fiction digital texts text messages magazines and publications newspapers audio books
8 LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY WRITING ACTIVITIES Children develop both their writing by reading and their reading by writing. The child s written language will develop when the child writes in different contexts and in different ways. This is true when the child is writing: on the computer notes letters and postcards text messages in a journal
LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 9 CONTINUE TO REMEMBER The conversation between you and your child is important for the development of the child s language and reading. The child s reading and writing will supplement each other throughout the child s schooling. Reading, writing and using the language is important for the child s continued development and educational opportunities. A fruitful cooperation between the school and the parents is very important for your child s continued development of language and reading.
10 LANGUAGE AND READING A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY INFORMATION You can obtain further information from your child s teachers. You can also find information and inspiration at the library and at these internet sites:
