1 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS regarding the KAMRA inlay procedure WHAT IS PRESBYOPIA? The lens in your eye is stretchy and flexible. With time the lens stiffens. As a result it can no longer bend into the right shape to bring close objects into focus. To compensate, you end up moving objects further away at just the right distance to focus. This is why you start holding reading materials at arm s length. The clinical term is presbyopia (prez- bee- O- pee- uh) and it happens to everyone eventually. WHAT OTHER PRESBYOPIC TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE? The most common presbyopic treatments in the U.S. are corrective eyewear, such as reading glasses or contact lenses, and monovision with laser vision correction. These options all come with compromise. Reading glasses and contact lenses are inconvenient and need to updated if your prescription changes. Monovision is a laser vision correction procedure that treats one eye for distance and one eye for near. The compromise with monovision is that it does sacrifice your distance vision for clear near vision as well as depth perception. You can have both eyes treated for distance. WHAT IS THE KAMRA INLAY TREATMENT? The KAMRA inlay treatment is an eye procedure that restores near vision and significantly reduces your dependence on reading glasses. HOW DOES THE KAMRA INLAY RESTORE NEAR VISION? The KAMRA inlay sits in the first few layers of the eye known as the cornea. Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, in the inlay is a mini- ring with an opening in the center. By using this pinhole effect, the inlay focuses light coming into the eye. This restores near vision while maintaining your distance vision. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THE KAMRA INLAY? The KAMRA inlay is ideal for active individuals who want to reduce their dependence on reading glasses and meet all medical criteria. It is important to understand there may be times when additional magnification is needed for small print, to see in dim light, or to perform a near task for an extended period of time. Unlike monovision LASIK, contact lenses or multifocal lens implants that can significantly compromise far vision and depth perception, the KAMRA inlay restores near vision while maintaining far vision. IF IT DOESN T AFFECT MY FAR VISION, THE WHY IS IT PUT INTO ONLY ONE EYE? The KAMRA inlay is placed in only one eye allowing you to see up close, while maintaining your distance vision in both eyes. Your non- KAMRA eye is left untouched. Working together, the eyes allow you to see near and far. HOW LONG WILL THE KAMRA INLAY LAST? DO I NEED TO REPLACE THE INLAY IF MY PRESBYOPIA WORSENS? The KAMRA inlay is a long- lasting solution to presbyopia. The KAMRA inlay will continue to be effective if you do not develop a cataract or any other eye disease unrelated to the surgery. WHAT MATERIAL IS USED TO MAKE THE KAMRA INLAY? The KAMRA inlay is comprised of a proven biocompatible material frequently used in a wide variety of eye and other medical implants, called polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). HOW BIG IS THE KAMRA INLAY? Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the inlay is a mini- ring with an opening in the center. The inlay is 1/3 the size of a contact lens and ¼ the thickness of a human hair. It measures 3.8mm in diameter with a 1.6mm opening in the center. WILL I FEEL THE INLAY IN MY EYE? Unlike a contact lens, the inlay is placed within the first few layers of the clear part of the eye, also known as the cornea, so it is not felt. 2

3 WILL PEOPLE BE ABLE TO SEE THE INLAY IN MY EYE? Most patients report the inlay is not visible. You ll see that it is nearly impossible to tell which eye has the inlay. However, in bright lighting conditions the inlay may be visible from the side in patients with light colored eyes. Even for these patients, the inlay is preferred to reading glasses as it is more convenient. WILL THE KAMRA INLAY DARKEN MY VISION? The inlay is designed to help your eye focus the light so images and text look clear again. Right after the inlay is implanted, you may notice some dimness in the implant eye. However, using both eyes there will be little to no dimness noticed. WILL THE INLAY DECREASE MY PERIPHERAL VISION? The inlay does not affect your side or peripheral vision. DOES THE INLAY MOVE IN MY EYE? Because the inlay sits under the first few layers of the eye, it is secured into place and does not move after it is implanted. HOW NEW IS THE KAMRA INLAY? The KAMRA inlay has been around for more than 10 years. It is the number one prescribed corneal inlay in the world. It provides an excellent, long- lasting, natural range of vision from near to far for those who have become dependent on glasses to read. CAN THE KAMRA INLAY BE REMOVED? Yes, the inlay can be surgically removed if necessary. WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE? From start to finish, the procedure takes less than 30 minutes. Numbing drops are used to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. You may feel slight pressure while Dr. Kornmehl uses a laser to create a small opening in the first few layers of your eye, known as the cornea. However, this only takes a few seconds. The inlay is then placed within the opening. Once the numbing drops wear off, your eyes may feel irritated or scratchy and you may also experience excessive tearing and light 3

4 sensitivity. We will provide medications to help you manage these symptoms and we encourage you to go home and sleep for a few hours to rest your eyes. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS AFTER THE KAMRA INLAY PROCEDURE? The most common side effects include dry eye, glare, halos and night vision disturbances. These are the same conditions you would experience with LASIK or PRK. Over time, these conditions are expected to resolve or lessen. WILL I NOTICE AN IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENT? As with any eye surgery, healing is a process so remember to follow the recovery instructions provided by Dr. Kornmehl. Your recovery will depend on your personal healing patterns. While some patients see an improvement within the first week to a month, other may require additional time. DO I REALLY NEED TO COME BACK FOR EYE CHECK- UPS? As with any surgery, follow- up appointments are very important. Dr. Kornmehl will want to follow your progress. While we do not anticipate any post- operative problems, some post- operative issues are only detected during a direct evaluation by Dr. Kornmehl and may go unnoticed by the patient. IS IT NORMAL TO EXPERIENCE BLURRY VISION OR FLUCTUATION? Yes, it is common to experience these symptoms on and off during the first 3 to 6 months. This is often a sign of dry eye or your brain adapting to the new vision. Use your eye drops as prescribed and give your eyes frequent breaks. If the condition persists, contact Dr. Kornmehl. HOW SOON AFTER THE SURGERY CAN I RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITIES? Most patients resume normal activities and return to work within hours. No swimming, pools or hot tubs for 2 weeks. Wear a headband to absorb sweat when performing vigorous exercise during the first post- operative week. WILL I STILL NEED TO WEAR READING GLASSES? The goal of the KAMRA inlay is to reduce your dependency on reading glasses. You may still need magnification if you are working in dim light, performing a near task for prolonged periods of time or reading tiny print. HOW CAN I ACHIEVE THE BEST RESULTS? You can aid your healing process by using post- operative medications and artificial tears as prescribed. Furthermore, you can accelerate your visual recovery by not using reading glasses when performing near tasks. 4

5 WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I DEVELOP CATARACTS? Should you develop a cataract, your cataract surgeon can easily remove and replace it with an artificial lens without having to remove your KAMRA inlay. The inlay will continue to provide excellent near vision. WILL THERE BE BETTER AND NEWER TREATMENTS AVAILABLE IN THE FUTURE? There are always possibilities of advancement in the medical field. One benefit of the KAMRA inlay is that it leaves future enhancements and treatment options available to you because it can be surgically removed. AM I A SUITABLE CANDIDATE FOR THE KAMRA INLAY IF I HAVE ALLERGIES OR DRY EYE? To determine if you re eligible, your eyes will need to be assessed by Dr. Kornmehl.
