GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Clinical Goal: Develop insight into how to provide health care for children from diverse cultural, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds and how families access the health care system 1. Provide health care to children in many clinical contexts by seeing patients in the community settings at Santa Clara Valley, the Mobile Health Van, and Ravenswood Family Health Center 2. Meet with experts in health insurance programs in order to define the safety net insurance programs for children, and to identify the enrollment process and requirements to qualify for Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids, and Family Pact 3. Summarize the process children go through with Child Protective Services when a case is opened for suspected abuse or neglect Community Goal: Learn about county and community organizations serving the needs of children from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds 4. List the agencies which provide nutritional for low income families and describe offered 5. Explain the health and social risks associated with homelessness in the Bay Area and talk to homeless families about their health concerns at a local homeless shelter. 6. Define the provided by the Family Advocacy Program, a partnership between the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County and LPCH. 7. Gain familiarity with the concept of cultural sensitivity, and identify strategies to improve cross cultural communication with patients from cultural backgrounds different from your own. 17. Analyze how social factors can influence health outcomes (Use Health Determinant Portfolio Reflection) Advocacy Goal: Learn how pediatricians can be advocates to improve health in their communities 18. Work with practicing community pediatricians in community sites who acts as children s advocates on the individual, community, and/or policy level 19. Conduct analytic reflection of Academic articles on physician role with Dr. Chamberlain 20. Apply the principles of community engagement while working with the Community Partner, the San Jose Unified School District 21. Prepare talks for community partners 2

ACGME COMPETENCY-BASED GOALS & RESIDENT EVALUATION During the Community Pediatrics and Child Advocacy Rotation residents will meet the following ACGME competency-based goals by fulfilling the following objectives. Each resident will be evaluated on the completion of rotation objectives, participation in advocacy and teaching opportunities, and through self and preceptor evaluations.
