Foreword 2 As students at the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) benefit from another year of successful experiential learning programmes organized by the Student Affairs Office (SAO), the range of programmes has continued to broaden in the past years. They now cover internships, leadership enhancement, service learning, environmental protection study and other experiential learning activities, taking students to the four corners of the world. In an era of globalization and rapid change, society has placed strong emphasis on our graduates transferrable personal and interpersonal skills such as leadership, morality, creativity, communication and the ability to meet new challenges. At HKIEd, we believe that it is important to nurture a new generation of leaders for the teaching and nonteaching sectors of our community with the right qualities to embrace the changes and demands of the 21st Century. In the past two years, hundreds of students were able to take advantage of the popular experiential learning opportunities the SAO offered. Students travelled far and wide to various places such as Australia, Germany, Japan, Ireland, Poland, Sweden, UK, USA, Mainland China and Taiwan. Their participation has helped their professional development and prepared them to become competent, adaptable and dedicated professionals Student Affairs Office

As we look towards the future, I sincerely hope that more and more students are able to take the opportunities the Institute is able to provide them. The HKIEd is firmly on a path towards becoming a full-fledged university, and I believe that just like the Institute itself, its students are deemed for greatness and a promising future. 6 The Career Development Summer Internship Programme is one of SAO s flagship programmes offering students extensive and far-reaching experiential learning opportunities. Students are able to take 8-week placements in different parts of the world, such as Australia, Germany, Ireland, UK, USA, Beijing, Shanghai, Kaohsiung and Hong Kong. In recent years, the Internship programme has rapidly expanded in placement number and geographical locations, as more and more organizations partner with HKIEd and take on our student interns. While organizations are able to reap the benefits of the wealth of talent and enthusiasm our students offer, student participants, as demonstrated in their reflections in this section, themselves gained a lot. Experiencing life in a workplace, students are compelled to face many challenges of the working world: acclimatizing to unfamiliar cultures, living independently, building working relationships and often overcoming language barriers. All of these help our students become young adults who are ready to lead in tomorrow s society. Students are invited to take the challenge of this competitive and demanding programme, and gain the kind of experiences that prepare you for tomorrow s society demands. 7 Australia Overseas Internships 6 CHOW Ka Wing BSocSc (Hons) in Global and Environmental Studies Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney The two-month internship provided me the opportunity to work in an official bureau and also an independent learning environment. I learned that the two most important attitudes were self-motivation and self-management. Self-motivation was essential. Contributing your own ideas to facilitate solutions would be a bonus to you and the company, and after successfully solving a problem, you gained satisfaction. The internship experience also taught me the importance of selfmanagement: managing your time, tasks and life. If you cannot manage yourself well, how can you manage others or an entire firm? Besides, the internship provided me time and space to rethink my life and targets. Although we may have different eventualities in the future that nobody can predict, having a direction and realizing it will be my aim and target within my three-year university studies. I will pursue my dreams to learn Japanese and try to explore different career options before deciding on a career path. To conclude, I am grateful that I had this precious opportunity to participate in the overseas internship. I will definitely miss Sydney and my colleagues there. MAK Wing Yan Cheryl BA (Hons) in Language Studies CitiPower Powercor This 9-week internship not only gave me a fruitful work experience, it also gave me a comprehensive overview on how a company operates. One of our job duties was to conduct interviews with different people in the company, for example, the Customer Service Advisor and the Customer Service team leader in a call center. These interviews allowed me to understand their major duties and challenges. For instance, we understood that good customer service skills would require patience, good listening skills and sympathy. After these interviews, I gained hands on experience from various departments and had a more concrete idea of how the company works. I had a really good time working with the team, as their hard work really inspired me. They did not just treat us as interns but as friends. Their loving care and teaching have given me great support to work in a foreign country. Student Affairs Office

LEUNG Kai Cheong Danny BEd (Hons) Primary Mathematics Major SA Power Networks In this internship, I was assigned to work in SA Power Networks in South Australia for two months. I visited different departments and workshops, and sometimes I stayed in the office to attend training sessions and meetings. The first thing that I learned from the internship was teaching skills. The lecturers in the training sessions provided easy and interesting methods to attract and guide staff to think. I think this teaching approach was very good because it created more opportunities for the audiences to share and interact. When I visited the IT department, I asked lots of questions. As I am majoring in IT, I was pleased that I had the chance to speak with the experts. They provided lots of useful information for me to improve my IT skills, which was especially beneficial for preparing me to become a computer teacher. The colleagues were very kind and nice. One of the colleagues invited me to live in his place for a week to understand family life in Australia. It was totally different from Hong Kong! We went to a stadium to watch an Australian football match and visited a museum to learn about the history of Australia. In the future I plan to study in America. I will try my best to use what I have learned from the internship and improve my English to help my further studies. SO Chui Kan- BEd (Hons) Liberal Studies Conservation Volunteers Australia(CVA) Although I only had 6 weeks at the CVA, it impressed me a lot I gained so much information about environmental protection; a fantastic experience to share with my students in the future. Besides our daily duties of planting trees, I also learned from locals, especially their life attitude and their willingness to protect the natural environment. Before the internship, I was not interested in outdoor work. However, my mind set changed at the end. Hong Kong people normally work indoors, treating outdoor work as hard; Australians enjoy the time to work everywhere. They do not look down on any job, appreciating the variety. It can be very enjoyable to work anywhere once you think positively. Working in Australia really made a significant impact on me. CVA was my first experience working overseas. After joining the program, I understood more about working with foreigners and about the local cultures. In Hong Kong, people here always work over time, having lots of pressure in their work. In the worst cases, people would work overnight. This is not good for people s health and personal development. If it is possible, we should try to learn the Australian attitude: work hard and play hard enjoy life. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

Germany Overseas Internships 8 LI Jiazhen- BEd (Hons) English Language German Industry and Commerce Greater China Through my internship with the German Industry and Commerce (GIC) at Karlsruhe, my interpersonal skills and crisis management skills have been significantly improved. I know how to politely get the attention from the potential new customers without face to face interaction, such as through the phone call and , whereas at the same time, I learn to build a long term, sustainable and close relationship with my colleagues. As a matter of fact, this is my very first experience working in a business company. Though the duration is not long, I acquired a lot of significant social and business communication skills. As a university student who is not majored in business, being provided the chance to have the internship in GIC was a great gift for me. I had so many first time brand new experiences, which are most valuable memories in my life. I have learned a lot from the Director, we are still in contact and I hope I can keep on learning from and contributing to the organization. KWONG Yuen Yee- BEd (Hons) Primary General Studies Major Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Berlin HKETO, Berlin was such a cultural friendly workplace where there were colleagues from Hong Kong, Turkey, the UK, Slovakia and Germany. I was assigned to work in different departments. My tasks included researching the development of the top sectors in European countries, contacting with European companies and setting up a new database system. What is more, taking the initiative and not being shy, I won an extra opportunity of organizing the Hong Kong Film Festival which celebrated the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People s Republic of China. It allowed me to get involved in talking to ambassadors, businessmen and journalists to promote our office and Hong Kong. Working at HKETO, Berlin has equipped me with a large social circle, a deep understanding about the relationship between Hong Kong and the world, research skills and other generic skills. These help me to be an all-round teacher. I am really proud of being provided with this invaluable opportunity to working in HKETO, Berlin and always excited to share my internship experience with others. Student Affairs Office

GAO He BEd (Hons) Primary Chinese Major Wolfgang-Goethe University I had a wonderful time at Goethe University in Frankfurt, during which I made many friends, accumulated work experience and broadened my horizons. My job as an intern at the Academy for Educational Research and Teacher Education involved providing materials and ideas about the Chinese educational system and teacher education. I m so glad all my efforts were appreciated by colleagues, and in return I got to know about German education and culture. Although I didn t speak German, I blended in with the local lifestyle. I travelled around the country, especially preferring where the Germans go rather than foreign tourists, trying as much local food as I could. In this way, my survival skills and planning trips in a foreign country were enhanced and my English improved. I was so lucky to have met many kind people who helped me on the road without any thought of reward, and they taught me to be grateful to life and people around me. CHAN Wing Yan Sophia - BEd (Hons) English Language Humboldt-University Zu Berlin Having been a part time tutor for two years, I have always been hoping to try something new in a new workplace apart from the school settings. As a result, the internship is what I ve expected, since it is a completely new experience to me. What I enjoy the most in my job is that there is a very open communication among the colleagues and me. In my opinion, communication is very fundamental in a workplace, especially when people need to work as a team. Fortunately, my boss and colleagues are very friendly and they always welcome me to ask questions whenever I have anything that I do not understand. Also, when collaborating with other interns (from overseas), we could manage to maintain a good communication and complete our work effectively. Besides, through promoting courses of the Humboldt University, I have learned how to formulate marketing strategies, research on potential targets and evaluation of our products i.e. the courses. All these skills and knowledge have also prepared well for my future careers. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

Ireland Overseas Internships 10 TO Ka Hei - BEd (Hons) Primary Mathematics Major GiftVoucher Shop Before working at one4all, I didn't realize how important communication was in an organization. In one4all, everyone communicated regularly which made team work so much more easy and effective. With high team spirit employees could focus on their work and love their company. As an intern, I was attached to different departments and delegated a range of duties, from filing and company research to production. The experience taught me a great deal of solid career skills which can be applied to my future career. My communication and English skills also improved as I had to communicate constantly with different colleagues. Lastly, I learned that independent working is very important to team work. Each has to complete her/his task on time so that the common goal can be achieved. I will try to apply this attitude to my work and studies back in Hong Kong. I can proudly tell you that this meaningful experience has brought me to a higher level. YANG Zhijun- BA (Hons) in Liberal Studies Education Dublin School of English (Saint Andrews College) When I decided to take this Irish Internship, I have set up three goals for myself. Now I can reflect with pride for I have achieved them mostly. For the personal goals, I have improved my overall abilities and I have broadened my horizons by living with local people and travelling around Ireland every weekend. In the aspect of educational goals, I looked into the society very carefully in different aspects and I also wrote diary every day to analyze some social phenomena which benefited a lot for my honor project. Moreover, I kept studying for IELTS every day and tried as much as I could to stay in the English-speaking environment. These prepared me well for the IELTS Test which I completed satisfactorily after this internship. In terms of my career goals, I have learnt three important principles about my future career: firstly, try my best to establish a good relationship with colleagues and it will improve my working efficiency. Secondly, get more work experience after or before graduation before deciding my career goals. We sometimes will romanticize our idea about certain career, a reality test is essential. Last but not least, compared to some specific knowledge, comprehensive abilities which include soft and hard skills count more in the job market. In conclusion, the internship is a meaningful experience for me. It has broadened my global horizons. It has changed my career plan. It has expanded my comprehensive abilities. It has demonstrated my growth. Thank you, Ireland! Thank you HKIEd! Student Affairs Office

YIU Yin Ni - BEd (Hons) Primary General Studies Major The Barnacles Hostel Temple Bar Time flies! My internship in Ireland was an awesome experience and I learned lots of things which helped my personal growth and career development. First of all, I was taught to be a more independent and tougher person. In my work place, one of the problems to deal with was English and the accent of my colleagues and customers. To deal with that, I worked hard on learning English when I was on duty and also after work. Besides, I understand that we must have the right mindset and attitude towards work. I told myself I am a learner, my objectives for coming here is to learn something new, broaden my horizon and improve my English. After changing my attitude, I felt relaxed and I could handle the work independently with enthusiasm. Secondly, I learned from my placement organization the importance of passion in whatever you do. They became the No. 1 hostel because they care about each customer, and not profit. Lastly, the extra benefit I gained through this programme is friends from the international community: Czech, German, Spanish and Irish. We shared our own culture to each other and made friend together. The internship programme provides me a learning opportunity to equip myself for future career development. As a HKIEd student, I am so proud to be a receptionist in a top hostel in Ireland and I am so happy that my working ability and performance were appreciated by my boss and customers. What I have learned and gained are more than what I expected. I hope that more and more students will be inspired by joining the overseas internship programme. 13 United Kingdom Overseas Internships 12 WONG Cheuk Man Charmaine - BA (Hons) in Language Studies The Isis Innovation Limited, Oxford University After this internship, I have become more proficient in translation which makes me consider taking up further studies in translation after graduating from HKIEd and may be work in the translation field in the future. Moreover, the experience here have made me became more mature. Since it is my first time working in an office, I have gained valuable experience in the workplace etiquette through this internship. Furthermore, my learning opportunities extended beyond work. I learned not only at work, but also in my free time off work. As I was the only intern in Oxford, I had no friends or peers to hang out with. I tried my best in making new friends which is something that is out of my comfort zone. I have become more active both at work and as a person. I think this is very beneficial towards my growth and my future. In the future, I would use this internship as a reminder of my experience here in Oxford and as a record of how I have grown as a person as this trip to somewhere so far away from home alone is very unforgettable. It has been a life-changing experience. CHEUNG Sin Tung - BA (Hons) in Language Studies The Hong Kong Association and Society The summer of 2013 must be one of the most unforgettable summers that I have ever had. I joined the Summer Overseas Internship programme held by SAO and I was selected to have my two-month internship in the Hong Kong Association & Society (HKAS) in London. During my internship in HKAS, I learnt a lot of different generic skills and gained plenty of actual experiences by working in the office. I also had chances to participate in planning and organizing events. Throughout the process, my decision making, problem solving skills were improved. Furthermore, HKAS gave me lots of chances to participate in various events and activities, for example guest luncheons, Polo event, seminars, etc. These certainly broadened my horizon and gave me a deeper understanding of how the business world operates and communicates. Apart from the above, this internship stimulated my personal growth. Adapting to a brand new environment has never been an easy task. Without the company of my family and friends, the reality pushed me to be more independent. I learnt how to take care of myself as well as solving problems independently. In conclusion, It was a life transforming experience that can help me to get well prepared for my future. I enjoyed every moment when I was in London. Thanks for HKAS and SAO for offering me a fruitful summer in UK this year. Student Affairs Office

WONG Ka Hing -BSocSc (Hons) in Global & Environmental Studies The China-Britain Business Council I set many goals for this internship from a personal, academic and career perspective. Coming back, I was happy to have achieved these goals. I also had the opportunity to think deeper about my strengths and weaknesses, and now have a clearer career plan. I worked in an events team at the CBBC and enjoyed organizing different events, communicating with, and hearing stories from different people. I faced various challenges: a different working culture, bilingual working environment and unfamiliar business practices. I learned that being humble and willing to try was critical to confronting them. I also had to weigh-up benefits and drawbacks while making decisions, and learned multi-tasking which are qualities essential in the workplace today. Working overseas is a challenging task, allowing me to practise my generic skills and problem-solving ability. I could accumulate different experiences, while extending my social network at the same time. Last but not the least, I thoroughly enjoyed the internship with UK group-mates we all built a friendship together. I m sure those unforgettable experiences will be amazing life-long memories. I look forward to sharing my experience with other students in the future. Thanks to the Student Affairs Office and HKIEd for giving me this chance to learn and gain wonderful experiences. NG Tsz Lok- BSocSc (Hons) in Global & Environmental Studies The London Chinatown Chinese Association My internship at the LCCA was an unforgettable learning experience. I helped prepare events such as the Chinese New Year 2013 Task Group and the Chinatown-Leicester Square Neighborhood Group meeting, and was photographer at the Diamond Jubilee Tea Party. For Chinese New Year, the biggest event, I helped establish and promote different sponsorship packages. I also advertised the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, and maintained their official Facebook page. From weekly meetings, I gained an understanding of events management and the importance of issues before, during and after the event, e.g. marketing, sponsorship, refreshments, press/crowd control, licensing, insurance, etc. The final period of my internship was exciting, where I handled the daily running of the office independently - typing minutes, managing membership, handling financial issues and marketing applying what I learned to various new challenges. I wondered whether I had become a permanent staff member of the LCCA! Overall, my internship was a fruitful opportunity to interact with many people and learn from their experience and skills, build my social network and increase prospects in the future. The internship allowed me to have a better understanding of myself, and improved my interpersonal skill and risk management skill. I send my appreciation to the LCCA for their trust and a very important life lesson in London. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

USA Overseas Internships 14 LEUNG Wan Yee Wendy - BEd (Hons) English Language World Chicago My two-month stay in Chicago and the internship in WorldChicago definitely made the summer of 2012 the most meaningful and profound summer vacation I have ever had during my time at the Institute. This internship facilitated my individual growth in many aspects, which helpd me to improve my knowledge of various countries and their individual advantages and limitations, and developed a wider global perspective on human relationships. After working in the USA, I learned a great deal about the country and culture. More importantly, I made lifelong friends from another country and gained further perspectives on how other countries viewed Asia and its people. Additionally, from my work in WorldChicago and communication with locals, I realized how mutual understanding and appreciation amongst cultures plays an important role in mediating international exchange and peace in the world. In terms of career development, this precious experience abroad has strengthened my language and work skills. I benefited from using English in daily life, and significantly improved my proficiency in all aspects. Although my internship was not directly related to education, it was a good career move, further qualifying me as an all-round developed and mature prospective teacher. ZOU Hanrui - BEd (Hons) English Language City of Chicago In Chicago I experienced another life in a totally strange place. The different language, food, and people here provided me the chance to touch a different culture. Exploring the various fun things to do in Chicago was a rewarding and unforgettable experience. During my internship, although I almost did the same kind of work in the office, I felt more experienced and confident in doing it over time. With the help from my supervisor and colleagues, I became more and more familiar with the government system and also the way in handling and examining different documents which was one of my major responsibilities. My work seemed to be easy and even sometimes boring at the beginning; however proofreading the documents have improved my English as well as my patience and carefulness. In conclusion, I did not only learn a lot about the American government systems and its official work, but also gained various skills from the internship, such as communication, interpersonal and computer skills. 16 WONG Chung Wai - BA (Hons) in Language Studies Atlanta Metro Chamber of Commerce Closing the two-month internship experience, I have to point out that the most inspiring part was the eye-opening opportunity to meet people and be immersed in the business environment in Atlanta. Significant connections were built and they are potentially paving my way into the business world. Also, the experience enabled me to observe communication among different parties. It has been a practical experience working in a chamber of commerce, and it provided me with insight on the operation and culture of non-profit making business organizations. Unlike companies that are constantly running in competition with others, they are pushing the economy forward by creating winwin situations for involving parties. This definitely opens up a career option for me. I was also trusted with substantial responsibilities which made it very rewarding when my contribution was recognized. For example, in the last week of the internship I finished creating a database that I had been working on all along. I was very glad to be told that it would serve as the foundation of a new project. Summing up the internship, one of the most unexpected pieces of knowledge I gained is that Chinese business and communities in the U.S. are of growing presence and stronger influence. I discovered that my Mandarin is good enough in the use of business conversations, but should aim for excellence if I wish to establish strong and long-term relationships with partners and clients. LAM Ka Wan - BEd (Hons) Primary Chinese Major Soccer in the Streets During my summer internship at Soccer in the Streets, one of my duties is to assist with the establishment of the Youth Advisory Council. One day, some 12-to-16 years old Latin American teens came to read the charter for the Council, and I found that it was difficult for them to read. This is because they were unable to receive suitable education due to poverty, and their language proficiency is only equivalent to a primary 3 student in Hong Kong. This reminds me that every child, regardless of their nationality, race or family condition, should have equal chances to receive the same quality education. Therefore, after the internship, I am determined to become a teacher, to Start children off on the way they should go. (Proverbs 22:6). Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

CHOI Wai Kwan - BEd (Hons) Primary Chinese Major People s Daily Overseas Edition The internship allowed me to recognize clearly my own direction and target. I still remembered on the first day of the internship, editor Ms. Zhong said "There are no teacher and students, only reporters and editors." Although her words have put me under pressure, it helped me to realize that I did not come here for school, I was a reporter on behalf of the People's Daily Overseas Edition. This was my mission and my responsibility. During the internship, I got different opportunities to meet with the locals and had a lot of cultural exchanges with them, my Putonghua proficiency have also been enhanced through these experiences. Our internship teacher took good care of us and we felt their love and care. Besides, I understood the real working life from the internship and this internship experiences have well prepared me for my future career. Student Affairs Office

Shanghai Greater China Internships 18 TAM Lok Yan - BEd (Hons) English Language Oracle Added Value I did my 10-week summer internship in the Human Resource (HR) department in Oracle Added Value. This was also my first business exposure in a non-educational working environment. Over the 10 weeks, I worked closely with my supervisor, HR manager and colleagues for translating and publishing HR documents such as company s notice and formal business letters. As well as being involved in documents edition and translation, I was also able to gain practical experience in areas of recruitment and training. I am so glad that I was given many opportunities to arrange interviews for candidates, take part in telephone interviews and organizing training. At first, I was surprised, because I do not usually get these kinds of opportunities as a university student, but it turned out to be very fruitful and rewarding. Apart from the exposure on HR issues, my additional bonuses of this internship are the people that I met and the friendship that I gained. My colleagues came from different parts of the world and they were willing to share with me their working experience and even gave me the chance to take part in their marketing projects. Through interacting and working with them, I understand more about the company business and the processes of handling a project and conducting a research. Student Affairs Office

SO Wing Ki - BEd (Hons) English Language Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai The internship experience was far more rewarding than I ever expected. Before I come to SHETO, I did not know what to do in the future. But my confusion was solved after my internship, as I found working in Public Relations (PR) really suits my personality and abilities. I found it very rewarding to communicate with different departments and help with organizing events. I also learnt a lot about decision making, as I had the chance to help the Hong Kong citizens who were in need. I had to decide how to help them, and initiate the corresponding procedures. Being a PR intern requires strong communication skills as we have to liaise with different parties, and it is important to know who should we contact or seek advice from. Thanks to my supportive colleagues, I gradually gained a better understanding of the relationship between different departments and performed my duties smoothly. I am more mature now and able to deal with difficulties in a calm and efficient way. I learnt how to work efficiently, to take advice and be modest. This internship undoubtedly enriched my life experience and inspired me a lot on my future career path. LAM Hong Ki - BSocSc (Hons) in Global and Environmental Studies N-Dynamic Research and Consultancy Limited Working in Shanghai helped me understand Chinese work and office culture. I learnt about how people accomplished tasks and cooperated with others, and I was able to compare this with the colleagues in my part time job in Hong Kong. Some of the challenges that my boss provided were quite unexpected. For example, I had meetings with customers from Australia, France and even Hong Kong. I learnt a lot from these people and was also very glad that sometimes they invited us to share our opinions, and was satisfied with our comments. I Having worked in N Dynamic, I took the initiative to learn from others, and actively sought tasks after finishing what I was responsible for. My self-esteem, independence and problemsolving skills were greatly improved and I have become more mature and confident to deal with challenges in the future. The best part of my internship was that my boss allowed me to express my opinion anytime and anywhere. I derived much satisfaction from her appreciation of my work. Upon the end of the internship, my reflections on my experience slightly changed and I realized that I have been a more mature person over time. As a student, I have learnt to be reflective. Before conducting a task, I have to be aware of the rationale behind. I needed to plan things and did preparatory work. After finishing the task, I ought to think of what to do so as to improve my work. As a professional, I have learnt to be responsible for my own role. In the real workplace, it often required the cooperation with different colleagues to complete a complex task. If I did not pay effort in doing my part, the entire task would be adversely affected. Thus, I needed to be responsible,so that I could cope with my work professionally. As a community member, I have learnt to be a more caring citizen, paying attention to the current issues. Even though it might not be a major news, it deserves people s attention. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

Hong Kong Local Internships 22 CHEUNG Cheuk Hang - BA (Hons) in Language Studies MMI Asia Pte Ltd It was my pleasure to have this valuable opportunity to work in MMI Asia as an intern for three months. MMI Asia specializes in organizing exhibitions. As a project assistant, my duty was to support marketing progress, carry out data research and assist daily administrative work. I took up different types of jobs such as telemarketing and media research. These were new experiences and challenges for me and I learnt a lot in the process. Even though this was my first time doing telemarketing, I started my work with over 300 companies in my hands. During these 300 calls, my communication skills progressed and I gained the courage to talk to different kinds of people. At first I hesitated to make the calls as I was worried about being refused, however after several calls I became more confident in convincing prospective exhibitors to join our shows. It was not as difficult as I expected when I gave it a try. During this internship period I gained knowledge about the exhibition field. I am glad to have worked in this company as I am interested in event planning, and this experience will definitely help me to pursue a career in this field. HO Pui Kay - BEd (Hons) Early Childhood Education Ocean Park Hong Kong Last year, I am pleased to participate in the Summer Internship Challenge Programme organized by the Student Affairs Office. I was assigned to a ten-week internship at the Department of Education of the Hong Kong Ocean Park. As a presenter of the exhibitions, I had to introduce the features of the pavilion to visitors and promote the concept of marine ecology protection. I was also a teacher in summer school who taught students aged 4-5 about marine life. This enabled me to bring in my teaching skills into the summer school programme, Moreover, I have the confidence to face the challenges of being a teacher in the future. In addition, I enjoyed the harmonious atmosphere in the Department of Education, the whole team worked like a big family. Overall, the internship experience has not only strengthened my confidence, but it has also enhanced my language proficiency and communication skills. The experience is very memorable. 24 SU Mei - BEd (Hons) English Language The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong This summer holiday I had a memorable experience which I appreciated from the bottom of my heart. I was assigned to the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong as part of the Local Internship Programme. It was a well-organized team as well as a warm family. We enjoyed our work every day and also shared the joy and happiness in life together. I felt some work pressure there, but it was not too much. I challenged myself constantly and also enjoyed the whole process. Therefore, for me this was an ideal working environment. My colleagues treated me as a good friend, I still remembered that on my first day they introduced themselves to me and showed me around. Moreover, whenever I had questions in the following days, they always helped me patiently. I would not have been able to adapt to my new job so quickly without their help, and I felt lucky to work with such a helpful team. It is hard to describe in words all the things I learned in these six weeks. I can only say that I will keep this valuable experience in my mind and I believe it will benefit me a lot in future. 25 Hong Kong Local Internships 24 POON Sen Kin Roy - BEd (Hons) Liberal Studies K Marketing and Communication Limited Last summer, I joined the Local Summer Internship Challenge Programme organized by the Student Affairs Office. The six-week internship at the K- Marketing and Communications Limited is an eye-opening experience for me. During the internship, in addition to the daily clerical work, I also worked on writing advertisements on forum, entering data, getting quotation for advertisements, designing leaflet for Olympian City. The wide variety and high complexity of work that I experienced helped me refine my skills which are essential for work. It also helped me increase my exposure to the real working world and gave me a fruitful experience, with a long-lasting impact on my future career development. Overall, the local summer internship is like the road of life for me. Though I met lots of obstacles along my journey, and I may be forced aside or pushed to my limits, perseverance guides me through the way. Action speaks louder than words, do seize the opportunity to act now and join the local summer internship. YU Ka Hei - BEd (Hons) Primary - Mathematics Major Bona Fides Consultancy Limited Have you been planning your summer holiday? I got a memorable summer holiday last year. Last August, I participated in the Local Summer Internship Challenge Programme organized by the Student Affairs Office of the HKIEd. After passing several selection interviews, I was assigned to work for the Bona Fides Consultancy Limited. I had the chance to experience working in marketing research, word processing and serviced office agency services. These experiences had widened my view in the business field which also benefits my future career development. Student Affairs Office

LUI Ka Man Carmen - BEd (Hons) English Language Crossroads Foundation I worked in Crossroads Foundation as a summer intern under the Global Distribution Department, which is responsible for managing the Book Room, Stationery, Household and Toys. This experience not only made my summer holiday different, it has also changed my attitude towards life. In the sixweek internship, I was responsible for undertaking some relevant steps of processing goods, from receiving pallets from the Incoming Goods Department, organizing the goods, packing them into boxes, labeling to matching the boxes to their ultimate destinations, wherever local or international. These procedures, sometimes, look mechanical, but the friendliness and openness of the foreign staff there taught me how to make life more interesting. I would like to use my life to influence others to embrace life with a positive attitude, just like how Crossroads has changed me! WONG Ka Wing - BEd (Hons) Early Childhood Education Hong Kong Wetland Park After participating in the Summer Internship Challenge Programme organised by the Student Affairs Office, I have gained a new perspective on life by exposing myself to a unique experience. Last summer, I was nominated to work in Hong Kong Wetland Park. I have completed 200 hours of service which includes being an Ecoguide, maintaining exhibitions, conducting ecological surveys, providing outdoor conservation services, conducting customer surveys and developing educational programmes. I learned problem-solving and leadership skills from the internship as I needed to cooperate with different people to organize a playgroup for children. These skills are essential for me to get well prepared for my future career. I will also try to integrate the environmental and conservational elements learnt into my teaching so as to cultivate children with an attitude of treasuring the world's resources. 27 Leadership Enhancement 26 Programmes In of contributing to society through community and social addition to the successful internships, students are offered the chance to partake in a different kind of work: that service. They work with each other to develop both leadership and team working skills, and, similarly to the internship programme, are offered the chance to work both locally and abroad. Four of the most successful programmes under this umbrella are the Leadership Enhancement and Development (LEAD) Programme, the Service Exposure for Global Awareness (SEGA) Programme, the Achiever and the Study Tour Organizer Award Competition. More information on each of these is given later, but we would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has been involved with and contributed to these programmes, and to thank the students for being excellent ambassadors of the HKIEd. 28 Leadership Enhancement and Development (LEAD) Programme In an era of globalization and rapid social, technological and economic changes, students need to prepare themselves for unpredictable futures. To well equip student in acquiring essential skills and knowledge to become socially commitment and globally aware citizens to meet the challenges for the 21st century, Leadership Enhancement and Development (LEAD) Programme has been launched since to provide a challenging training and living environment in overseas, particularly in developing countries, to strengthen students leadership ability, cultural competency as well as generic skills. Students are also expected to acquire skills and knowledge in organizing activities and training programmes. Through interacting with local people and students in the host countries, their circle of acquaintance as well as international outlook is broadened. Selected students will be placed in a camp site of selected countries to join a leadership training workcamp and engage in various community organization works with a group of international and Hong Kong students for about 2 to 4 weeks. FAN Wenxin - BEd (Hons) Chinese Language Semarang of Indonesia It was a colorful and memorable experience joining LEAD Programme and staying in a lovely village in Semarang of Indonesia with a group of Hong Kong and Indonesia volunteers. Through participating in LEAD Programme in Semarang, I was given the opportunity to develop my leadership skills, contribute to the local community, conduct cultural exchange with local volunteers, play with children in the village and visit local secondary schools and university. What impressed me the most is that we were given the opportunity to carry out environmental protection work which I have never tried before, such as planting mangrove. Although what we have done might not be able to contribute a lot to the local community, we have realized the importance of protecting environment and natural resources. We have started to pay more attention to environmental issues and problems as well as promote the urgency of environmental protection. The LEAD programme experiences influenced me a lot. I hope I could do more things to influence others and build a better world. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

TAYYABA Bibi - BEd (Hons) English Language Dhaka of Bangladesh and Kathmandu of Nepal LEAD programme has provided me a holistic development opportunity in which I endured physical, mental, emotional and cultural challenges. I have had first hand experience of what an ordinary person would see on television or read in newspapers only. 28 Our physical contributions to the small rural communities in Bangladesh and Nepal were of minimum benefit; however, what we gained during the process was the essence of this programme. For instance, understanding, appreciating, and experiencing the beauty and quality of life from the locals perspective was one of the most memorable moments; having to live, eat and work with a group of strangers with unique characteristics was a challenge we as a team successfully passed; and finding self-contentment by simply putting a smile on the faces of children. To encapsulate, joining LEAD is one of the things I will always be proud of in my life! LEUNG Kit Yi - BEd (Hons) Visual Arts Addis Ababa of Ethiopia Before the trip, we hoped to convey the we set of thinking positive to refugees, especially hopes and future. Therefore Start over as the theme. I experienced a lot from Ethiopian. Children held my hands with smiles in refugee center, local volunteers greeted with hugs in charity. I fully experienced their warm welcome and love through this simple interaction. I was surrounded by smiles and hugs. Sometimes, when I looked out of window in the coach, there were always some children chasing the car to beg for money. Some teenagers squatted down to clean the customer s shoes. The workers were transiting several wooden trays by his head on the street. The backwardness development and poverty in this country is obvious, but their hard work paid off and the standard of living is improving. I was moved by their spirit and insistence of lives. Peoples may have no choices about their home countries and families, but they have right to make a choice about lifestyle and mind by their own. I am grateful to join LEAD programme and have a chance to experience in Ethiopia. It was doubtlessly a turning point in my life. After experiencing Ethiopian work in adverse circumstances, they gave me energy to focus on teaching as my career because I believe that knowledge changes people fate. Now, the spirit of Start Over can also being applied in my daily life. I have limitless power to move on now! HO Hei Man - BEd (Hons) Early Childhood Education Hanoi of Vietnam Enhancing my role from mentee to mentor in LEAD programme, I experienced many challenges which made me become more mature and further recognized my own potentials. Last Christmas, I led a team of mentees to Vietnam with another partnering mentor. During the 14-day tour, we rendered different types of voluntary service in a Vietnam kindergarten. Apart from having fun with kids, we had also gained fruitful learning and established friendship with local volunteers and children. Through participating in LEAD Programme, my problem solving skills and communicating skills have greatly improved. These improvements are definitely contributing to my future career. We have met some unexpected problems in this tour such as shortage of water and unfavorable weather. When we faced these problems, we discussed and thought of any possible solution together. It made me understand the power of togetherness. When we are in a team, every teammate s idea should be respected and I found many of them very useful. I enjoyed working with my teammates and we learned from each other. Cooperating with different people can help us find out our strengths and weaknesses, and become more confident to meet various challenges in the future. Student Affairs Office

YIK Yuen Yee - BEd (Hons) Primary Mathematics Major Bangalore of India LEAD programme gave me a great opportunity to explore something new outside Hong Kong. I visited Mongolia and India both for more than two weeks with 12 university students. During the tours, I taught English in a school, painted for school, and planted in a farm. Therefore, I had many opportunities to experience cultural differences in different places, in particular eating customs. Moreover, as a mentor in this programme, I truly believe that that I have improved a lot of my leadership skills. Before the tours, we had to prepare a lot of things with our mentees. So, it is important to have good organizational skills. In addition, I learned how to delegate tasks and map out plans on top of effective time management. Yet, the most important thing I have learnt after the programme is to show my passion as a mentor as well as volunteer in the programme. As a mentor, a leader without passion is not a leader. Passion can inspire so much in others through my own passion and enthusiasm. It can help you to lead others to the same direction. As a volunteer, passion is a motivation to help others. While helping others, I also gained a lot of happiness. After the programme, I knew more about myself. I found my strengths and weaknesses. Understanding myself is significant for knowing how to improve and develop myself in future. Finally, I really want to thank my teammates; we have grown up together. Another thank you goes to Student Affairs Office for giving me such a wonderful opportunity for me to learn and experience different things. LIN Wai Ho Joseph - BEd (Hons) Primary General Studies Major Bangalore of India Last summer, I have joined LEAD programme to Bangalore of India with a group of schoolmates. In my eyes, India is a mystery and beautiful country. We visited many unique and wonderful landmarks. Although India is a developing country, it has many modern and big shopping malls. Before we went to India, there were some cases about women being raped which indeed bought some worries and concern to us; especially, we when have so many girls in the group. However, after we went to India, we discovered that India is not as dangerous as what we thought. Male and female in India have to keep a certain distance on bus. This serves to prevent female from being sexually harassed in public transportation. I am quite surprised of this because we cannot imagine there are such rules and norms in India to protect women. Indeed, I have learnt a lot from the trip to India. I have discovered that my skill on risk management has improved sharply. I realize that many external factors and challenge are uncontrollable and predictable. However, by mastering good risk management skill, problems and obstacle can be handled. I believe this is very important in my future no matter it is working or studying. More importantly, I still remember that before we went to India, we have many misconceptions and worries about that country. What we have heard from media sometimes may be over-reported and exaggerated. After the trip, I understand there are two sides in coin. We should interpret things in a broader and critical way. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

LO Hung Pan - BEd (Hons) Liberal Studies Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia 30 My trip to Mongolia seems like yesterday. Looking back on the photos taken in Mongolia, I can clearly see that the country is so developed that it is not far lagging behind other developed countries. Like many other Central Business Districts (CBD) in the world, Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, is highly commercialized with world famous brands and candy stalls outlining its urban landscape. However, one thing remains indisputable behind this urbanization is the national wide disparity. In recent years, many multi-national corporations have been migrating to Mongolia to extract its natural resources. While celebrating its richness and the considerable profits generated, many children in Mongolia can still hardly access education in the 21st century. After talking to the local people, I found that orphans in Mongolia lacked resources and network for their studies. In the face of the insufficiency, they enjoyed exploring knowledge on their own. The most remarkable spirit they shared was their tireless passions for promoting music and their interests to people around them. I remembered there was a kid who liked drawing stuck to a volunteer all day to teach him how to draw. Perhaps, this is what we should uphold. We should always cherish all the opportunities to learn to become a better person and be willing to share whenever possible. The spiritual purity found in the children taught me a lot how I should enjoy my life and learning. I also learned how to be myself and laugh from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget all the kids I met on this land Mongolia. TSE Chi Wai - BEd (Hons) English Language Dhaka of Bangladesh In 2010, I went to a developing country - Bangladesh - to do voluntary services for two weeks. My group mates and I were mainly responsible for building toilets to promote personal and public hygiene. We also taught primary and secondary school students English in a local community where education was perceived to an extravagance for most of the families. The living condition was harsh that the electricity supply was unstable; the metallic taste in drinking water was also beyond description. Worst of all, we could only take cold showers throughout our voluntary program. This experience let me understand how fortunate I am in Hong Kong and it also made me more aware of the issue of inequity in the world. That was why I joined LEAD program again because I wanted to help those people in need and, more importantly, to let other schoolmates benefit from this program. So in 2012, my partner and I led a group of university students to Vietnam. Since this time I took up the role of a mentor, the responsibilities were totally different. I learned to organize a series of pre-departure trainings. I was also responsible for program planning and mentee recruitment. There were also a range of preparations and duties I had to complete. I needed to communicate with volunteers in Vietnam to make sure the service was well thought-out. Although it was hard, it was really meaningful and worthwhile. LEAD program has not only sharpened my leadership skills, but it has also heightened my cultural awareness and expanded my social network. Lastly, I would like to thank SAO for giving me so many opportunities and to learn. Student Affairs Office

YU Chi Wai - BEd (Hons) Primary General Studies Major Addis Ababa of Ethiopia Started from zero, we turned our ideas into action. Workshops, briefings and meetings fully engaged 7 of members into the program. Before joining the LEAD, I have never thought of the Refugee s issues in Ethiopia. This country, which is full of misconception and misinterpretation, is a lovely place for me. Refugees are stigmatized as poor and incapable, but actually they are energetic and positive. What impressed me the most was the Picture drawing sessions we held in the centre. We asked them to draw their ideal self and many of them did have a positive thinking about their future career. People might think that Ethiopia is an under-privileged and hopeless country, so did i. After this trip, I think serving people should regardless of place and space, only heart matters. Even in an affluent country, there are people being neglected. So it depends on how we think and how much effort we put. We can still help people wherever we are. Albert Einstein once mentioned that: Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school. As a teacher-to-be, the most important thing for me is to nurture students as a good citizen with proper value. LEAD Program enriches my horizon about the world. I have strengthened my sense of responsibility and identity to the society. I do always remind myself to Think Big and Do Small. I would like to take my experiences to share with them and to let my students know more, care more and do more to the people and the society. LEUNG Sze Long Sharon - BA (Hons) in Language Studies Dhaka of Bangladesh The LEAD trip to Bangladesh in Christmas is an eye-opening experience. Compared to the people in Bangladesh, Hong Kong people are very lucky. We can get everything very easily. However, this is not the case for the children living there. Even though it was quite cold in the mornings, most of the children just wore few clothes. Some of them even have no shoes to wear. To us, these are very basic things in our lives and we all take it for granted. In addition, going to school is a dream for the children in the village. Most of the children do not know English. It is difficult for us to communicate with them. We met a boy who is only 6-7 years old but he was already working in the campsite with us in order to earn a living. It is a pity that he cannot receive education and lose the chance to change his future. After all, I am glad that I have this chance to join the LEAD programme because this allows me to understand more about the situation in the less developed country. Although they are not rich, they are willing to share what they have with us and treat us wholeheartedly as friend. It also reminds me how fortunate I am. I really miss the time with all the local people there. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

SO Sze Man - BEd (Hons) Chinese Language Mae Sot of Thailand We all know, LEAD is for Leadership Enhancement And Development. Last year, I joined LEAD programme which gave me a chance to go to Thailand (Mae Sot) during Easter with my team. After we finished our journey, LEAD means Leadership, Enjoyment, Achievement and Development to me. 32 For Leadership, we have learnt how to be a responsible leader. All of us must be person-in-charge by turns so we needed to tackle with any difficulties or urgent condition. Finally, we equipped with generic skills which are useful for our further career. TAM Wing Yan - BEd (Hons) English Language Kathmandu of Nepal In light of enjoyment, I really appreciate and cherish those days we were in Thailand. We visited different organizations to gain more knowledge of Thailand. We did construction work to build a little playground for local students. But we never say it is hard, because we enjoyed every moment. Moreover, I always imagine what I would like to be if I have the same situation with local people in Mae Sot. There were insufficient medical treatments. They were living in poor environment. One of my achievement was I could be empathetic. There were too many people waiting for our help. A penny saved is a penny earned. Here was my first step to give my hands. For development, we held debriefing every night in order to reflect what we have done and share our feeling. During the debriefing, I ccould know more about my groupmates which could let us have better communication. The most important thing is that we try to improve ourselves and discuss how we can do better next time. That is why we can grow together, learn together. It is not easy to overcome weaknesses and be humble to learn from others, but we are a team, so we did it. No matter where we are, we will not forget what we have learnt and gained in LEAD programme. I have had the honor of being in the programme for two consecutive years, during which I have experienced the most meaningful and worthwhile winter breaks of my life that I am always eager to share my life-changing experience with people around me. LEAD has played a significant role in developing my generic skills and expanding my intellectual repertoire essential for youth leaders of the 21st century. Interacting with people coming from different cultural backgrounds, I have also developed cultural awareness for effective intercultural communication. Being a language student, I always feel privileged to able to utilize my linguistic knowledge to study and gain better mastery of the languages spoken by the local communities of the voluntary programmes. Most importantly, however, the different roles I took up in the outbound trips have prompted me to explore and evaluate the meaning of leadership from different perspectives, which in turn, have a direct influence on my leadership style and personality. The concept of leadership is more than about completing tasks; instead, it is about how much one strives for personal improvement, thereby enhancing group effectiveness and motivation through communication and empowerment. The integrity and consciousness of leaders will also add values to their leadership capabilities. Again, there is no one-size-fit-all leadership rule for all leaders. I firmly believe that proactive and spontaneous leaders will always demonstrate the audacity to step outside of their comfort zones and challenge their beliefs and perceptions. While confronting setbacks and failure, they will become more dauntless to optimize their leadership capabilities. Student Affairs Office

Service Exposure For Global Awareness (SEGA) Programme Service Exposure for Global Awareness (SEGA) Programme offers opportunities to students who are interested in exploring local and international social phenomenon and social problem. In the course of investigating social issues, students 5S, that is social responsibility, sense of global citizenship, social communication skills, self-management skills and self-reflection ability, can be enhanced. Students can enjoy high autonomy and learn from different perspective in the Programme. They can form their own group to enroll in the Programme, select their interested area to study, decide which overseas country to go for exchange and design the overseas tour. Students can go to an Asian country to study and compare the same social issue under different cultures and territories together with university students of the visiting country. It is expected that students can learn more about different social needs and issues in the international, and be able to respect human lives and appreciate their own lives through the Programme. SZETO Chi Ying - BEd (Hons) Primary Mathematics Major Japan Group Being one of the members of Service Exposure for Global Awareness (SEGA) programme, I had an extraordinary opportunity to serve in local NGOs and join a service tour aiming at disabled people and low income families in Japan during this summer. Through participating in various kinds of voluntary works within four months at Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth, I got to know more about the emotional and physical needs of the people with disabilities. I had one-to-one interview with around 20 disabled persons. It enhanced my communication and interpersonal skills and also made me become more sympathetic towards others. Every person is an individual and I learn to respect and accept the differences between one another. As none of our members can speak Japanese, language was a great barrier when we were organizing our tour. However, we tried to break through the language barrier by putting more effort and using different strategies. In return, we had a fruitful tour in Japan, we achieved more than we had expected. We had an in-depth exchange with the university students, persons with disabilities and staff of NGOs in Japan. Participating in this tour enabled me to become a better team player and also improved my interpersonal skills. I am thankful to be in this programme. As a university student and a future teacher, this fruitful experience readied me to be a global citizen and to take up civic responsibilities. This experience will be invaluable for me to share with my students in the future. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

34 WONG Yat Chung BEd (Hons) English Language Singapore Group If you are looking for a programme that can fulfil your hopes of better utilizing your spare time and summer holiday, acquiring a wide range of skills and gaining an in-depth insight in social issues that you are most interested in, then Service Exposure for Global Awareness (SEGA) programme is the one. After days and nights of trainings, local service attachment and tour preparation, we brought along our experience and knowledge gained from working with youths-at-risk, children from low-income families and corresponding professionals, and flew to Singapore this June to begin our OWN 9-day service tour. This tour was definitely our own tour, not our coaches, the staff members, nor the others tour. We planned the whole itinerary, searched for the service agencies, contacted the overseas NGOs, booked air-tickets and hostel rooms. These were all done on our own. It was a tour that we longed for. Both the preparation and the execution of it surprisingly offered us a great deal of learning opportunities that were out of our expectations. You will not know it unless you are in. As a team leader, I was glad to see that our team successfully accomplished all the tasks we had set. I was greatly satisfied that I fulfilled the duty and the role as a leader in a service tour Yes, I have proved to myself that I could do it. As a university student and the pillar of the society, I have become more sensitive to the social issues and have a stronger sense of social responsibility to my home town. Yet, more importantly, as a future teacher, the experience and knowledge gained from participating in SEGA programme has shaped me as a better teacher. SEGA programme was one of the most important programmes that I have ever joined in my university life. Student Affairs Office

CHIU Wing Sheung - BA (Hons) in Liberal Studies Education Taiwan Group Joining into SEGA Programme is undoubtedly the smartest decision I have made in this year of study. It is my pleasure to share one of the most unforgettable pieces of memories to all of you here. Our team got a chance to go to a nursery school for mentally and physically handicapped children, with most of them have Down Syndrome and Autism. Minorities of them are in severe situation, for example a 4-year-old boy could not control his emotion and keep crying without any reasons. Another 7-year-old girl had to take 9 different kinds of medicine every day and so on. These painful experiences are not once; it is long-term and even forever. We have found that the children were far more well-disciplined and proactive than many healthy children during lessons. Teachers there were admirable--they felt highly excited once they saw even a very small improvement of the children and kept thinking of new ways to help the children. What I saw from them are hope and love. I consider myself blessed to have such a chance to lead the team to Taiwan and to have been accepted into service recipients lives, to share their joys and their sorrows, their struggle and triumphs. What I have learned from the children is beyond my expectation treasure lives, love lives. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

Prospective Service Leaders Enhancement Project - Achiever 36 With the support of Victor and William Fung Foundation and Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership & Management(HKI-SLAM), a year round co-curricular project, Achiever, was launched from September 2012 until the end of August This project is composed of three interlocking phases, namely, Foundation, Self-Advancement, and Integration. The first year for launching this project serves as a pilotrun attempt to provide feedback and assessment results on how the core beliefs, key principles, and learning outcomes as outlined in HKI-SLAM Curriculum Framework can be fully incorporated and applied in the contexts of student development projects of the HKIEd SAO and in the communities for the coming second and third years respectively. With Leadership is a Service as the basic understanding among all Core Beliefs of the SLAM Curriculum Framework, the Achiever Project had focused more on (1) Everyone is a leader; (2) Quality service leadership = Competency + Character + Care; and (3) The Server is the Service. The Project has three distinctive features: 1. It demonstrates how key service leadership core beliefs and principles can be incorporated into self-directed cocurricular activities fully operated outside an academic faculty and adopting an experiential-learning approach and continued self-reflection; 2. It provides an individualized learning experience which is unique to each participant relevant to fulfilling his/her own personal development goals based on self-understanding Student Affairs Office

within the SLAM Curriculum Framework; and 3. It consists of 3 interlocking phases of guided learning experiences for participants and includes acquiring knowledge on service leadership concepts, developing their own service leadership goals, balancing needs of self and others, examining how skills of effective service leadership are applied in different contexts and situations. Phase One: Foundation 1.Talk on Service Leadership 2.Self-understanding Workshops using Myers- Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment 3.Workshops on Goal Setting Phase Two: Self-Advancement Training activities included Adventure-based Training Camp, Life Education: My Life, Understanding Death Tour, Dialogue in the Dark and,adventure-ship programme Company Visit: Students conducted interviews with awardees of the Community Caring Shop Recognition Scheme organized by Social Welfare Department Consolidation groups helped students to deeply reflect and receive feedback from others on their performance in their own projects based on service leadership principles under the guidance of professional mentors. Phase Three: Integration International workcamps were arranged to further motivate students to plan for a self-directed learning experience through involving in voluntary service tours. Project Sites of International Workcamp: Iceland, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bali, Taiwan & China WONG Joey- BEd (Hons) English Language Taiwan Firstly, I reflected a lot after joining this work camp. Before visiting Taiwan, I did not pay fully attention to my grandparents owing to busy school or social life. During the work camp, we did a lot of services including cleaning the elderly houses, chatting with them, etc. I discovered that they did not need materialistic life such as money or expensive goods, but they may only want love and care from the people surrounding them. After this camp, I would try to pay more attention to them and spend more time to communicate with them. Time is really short for us, thus we need to cherish what we have in this moment. Apart from that, the most memorable part is the friendship gained in this work camp. There were total 23 work campers, the majorities were Taiwan local volunteers and others were from all around the world. I met a lot of new friends like Italian, Korean, and British. Through these two weeks, we became good friends and shared our cultures to each other. Not only my language skills are improved, but also I have widened my horizon. I know more about the culture in different countries and I think that it is really crucial for a pre-teacher. Service Projects to further apply service leadership skills. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

38 CHAN Yik Shan Amy - BSocSc (Hons) in Global and Environmental Studies Spain Although all the campers had different languages and cultures, all united as a team to live, work and share the experience together. It was difficult when first met because the students were not familiar with one other. With caring, the difficulties were erased and we acted as a team to finish our tasks. We encountered hard living conditions and worked together to make our tasks simple and thankful to finish. It was not how the country made us, but how we behave to represent our country that was important. I had learnt that there is no single character in any one country. Showing your love to others is the way to change how people think about your culture. Character is how you communicate with people, competency helps you to deal with your task but caring is how to break through bridges and show friendliness with one another. Only our heart and attitude can break the ice. We are all in one world with no differences between us. CHEUNG Wing Ying - BScEd (Hons) in Science and Web Technology Spain My project was about archaeology and I needed to participate in the excavation of the archaeological site. In this workcamp, I took part in many challenges such as living in a forest for almost two weeks. The best learning experience I had was to work with people from different countries. This was a very good experience as I met many new friends. Through this work camp, I learnt a great deal about different cultures from my campmates. Everyone played an important role in their groups. Afterwards, I found that I had become more independent and brave. I needed to work under the sun excavating for almost five hours every day. With the help and courage of my teammates, I tried my best to complete the work. The leaders of this camp taught me that service leadership includes care, a good character and competency in your job. I will never forget this wonderful experience! Student Affairs Office

CHONG Yin Tung Tony - BEd (Hons) Primary Mathematics Major Taiwan I undertook caring services for the elderly. One elderly person came from Hong Kong but had lived in Taiwan for 50 years. I talked a lot with him during the project and he cried at the end. I learnt that sometimes the relationship between people does not depend on how far away you are or how long you have known each other. It depends on how caring you are. CHOI Yi Ki Natalie - BEd (Hons) Primary Chinese Major Sweden A service leader has many duties when he or she is developing his or her leadership in a program. Personally, I needed to ensure all the activities proposed could be carried out smoothly during the study tour in Sweden. Meanwhile, I easily forgot to lead my teammates to reflect on their personal development, and did not give them the opportunity to show their potential. In fact, the team member s growth was more important than accomplishing the task. They may find new things though they encountered errors. In the past, I would not take risks because I was afraid of failure. I would plan everything and ask my team members to follow my orders. After completing the study tour, I found out that I should lead my teammates to learn from errors rather than taking the task accomplishment too seriously. As an effective leader, I should not aim for No failure. However, in the future I still have to strengthen my crisis management abilities. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

LAI Yuen Yi - BEd (Hons) Primary Chinese Major China Last summer I joined the leadership training programme organized by The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Kowloon Chamber of Commerce which targeted some elite students for a ten day training experience. 40 I had an unforgettable experience and made friends with students from Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong. We had conferences, outings, group discussions and presentations related to economic development within these four places. I learnt how to get along with my group mates with different personalities and cultural backgrounds, even though contradictions emerged and we had to mediate and listen to both ideas. Communication was a problem as the Taiwanese students did not speak Cantonese, and to tackle this problem we spoke Putonghua although some of us didn t speak it very well. Finally, I also cooperated with Hong Kong joint-u students to prepare a performance; once again I could feel everyone can be a leader as all of us put in maximum effort. Now I feel full of enthusiasm to work with others from a leader s perspective. LEUNG Chui Ying - BEd (Hons) Early Childhood Education Indonesia I had learnt about the principles of service leadership in my previous Achiever programme. I found that this work camp was a good chance for me to apply my knowledge to become a service leader. In the work camp, I not only helped the children to learn about environmental protection, but co-operating with volunteers also helped my personal growth. This is because those volunteers were from different culture and backgrounds and their views different to mine. This was especially evident during our lesson planning. Although the students I taught in school didn t understand much English, we showed them how to protect the environment through activities and games. We hope that what they learnt was not just written knowledge, but more importantly a way of life. We hope that they will have influence on others in the community to act in the same way in order to protect their environment. Student Affairs Office

CHO Lap Yin Zadia - BSocSc (Hons) in Global and Environmental Studies Sri Lanka This was my first time joining an international project by myself. I did a lot of preparation before I left. I learnt a lot in the process of preparation. Of course I had a great experience in Sri Lanka. I fed and cleaned turtles. Also, I cleaned the tanks and transferred sand to a place called olive riley in order to provide better living conditions for sea turtles. Before we came to Sri Lanka we did not know each other, but my group came together because we were all helping the sea turtles. Therefore this project taught me how to look after sea turtles but in doing so I learnt how to look after other people. CHAN Shuk Han Kate BEd (Hons) Early Childhood Education Poland The most important learning experience I gained from the workcamp was how to get along with people who came from different countries. Before the work camp, I thought that language was the most important element of communication. We had 11people in the work camp came from 7 countries. We all had our own background, language, religion and culture. Although English was the official language in the workcamp, unfortunately my English was not good. I was worried about how I could co-operate with other campmates successfully. It was a big challenge for me. During the work camp, I found that I was wrong, as English was not the mother tongue of all of the camp mates, but they still tried to speak actively. I realized that if we had the courage to step forward, try to speak and listen patiently, we were able to break through the communication barrier between us. Apart from speaking, we also used body language or our smartphones to help us to express ideas to others. It was good to share different opinions and cultures, and find out more about each other and the world. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

SUN Yifei Maggie - BEd (Hons) English Language Poland 42 During the workcamp, I met volunteers from all over the world. All of us were university students and most of us were 20 years old. During our talks, I found that they had much more knowledge about the world than I did. They had traveled to many countries, each of them knew several languages, and they had a clear knowledge about the world history and politics. I noticed my drawbacks after chatting with them, so I tried my best to learn from them. I asked questions when I was confused and learnt some expressions of their languages. After the two-week workcamp, I know more about the world and I am able to say some basic sentences in other languages. What I learnt is that youth is a gift. Although everyone has various background and family, one can always make his youth more worthwhile. I will struggle to make the best use of my youth so that I will not regret in the future. Thanks to the workcamp and to Achiever, I will try to be a better me! WONG Pak Wing Patrick - BEd (Hons) Primary General Studies Major Turkey I was a careless person. I always forgot to do things. Before this project, I told myself that I had to improve the situation. I had to do everything in a more careful way, and have more preparation for every future incident. For example I prepared a lot for working under the sun because I knew the temperature in Turkey would be higher than Hong Kong. I put a cotton towel on my back to absorb my sweat and an iced towel around my neck to help me keep cool. For the other campers, I wore my bag with me all the time even though it was very heavy. Thankfully my efforts were appreciated by all the campers. When the campers went to work in the morning, I usually took several bottles of cold water and my folding fan with me. I distributed these resources to the campers when they felt hot. Therefore this project had taught me to be a more careful person. I had shown my concern and care for the people around me by providing the resources they need. Student Affairs Office

YU Meiyao Summer -BSocSc (Hons) in Global and Environmental Studies Turkey For me, the two greatest challenges in this work camp were the spontaneous way that the local organization arranged things and the language barrier. I would like to share how I dealt with the problem of the language barrier. Our situation was that nobody out of the coordinators, the drivers, the cooks, the security workers and the majority of the campers could speak English proficiently. This turned our daily communication into a big problem. I found that body language was the most effective method of communication. I needed to carefully observe the way people spoke to gauge their mood from their gestures. We also used technology to help us communicate, such as looking up words using Google translator and a smart phone dictionaries app. I even became the "translator" for the Turkish coordinator to teach the campers how to follow his work tasks. After I had found a way to communicate with people, they were always open and willing to share things with me. In this way, we established friendships which made our work in the very hot weather both easier and funnier. NGAI Ka Wai Carson - BEd (Hons) Physical Education Iceland The first thing which impressed me deeply is when we are facing the uncertainties, the best preparation is the attitude that you are anytime ready to make changes rather than a scheduled solution. It is because your scheduled solutions are not absolutely fit for uncertainties. Sometimes you think you have already developed many solutions, but sadly what happen in the next minute is always out of your expectation, just like the weather, changing in every second, in Iceland. Secondly, real and long-lasting happiness is not only controlled by desire and freedom, but also the ability to analyze the consequence of decisions and high discipline. One night after work in the campsite, everyone, around 13 people, was gone to the club in the downtown, taking 45 minutes to walk from the campsite to the downtown. They departed at 1am but we had a day trip in the coming day. They all came back around 4 to 5 am and slept for just 3 hours and then woke up for the daytrip. Finally, they felt very tired in the daytrip and not so much happy after it. It proved that they did not gain any happiness in the overall, because the happiness from clubbing was offset by the unhappiness from the day trip. 45 44 Study Tour Organizer Award Competition The Study Tour Organizer Award is granted to the winners of a competition in which the participants write and present a study tour proposal to the selection committees and convince them their learning values of the study tour and their leadership ability in leading a tour. The spirit of this award is to encourage our next generation not only to join a tour organized by others, but also to organize a tour by themselves from design to execution. Students can realize their dream if they believe in its beauty and have the courage to pursue it. This competition has been held for six years, with more than 100 teams competing for the awards. It is not difficult for you to discover our students creativity and leadership through reading their proposals and listening to their presentations. More importantly you will absolutely be convinced that students can develop their potentials if we trust them and give those opportunities to try. Student Affairs Office

Harmoni-Sweden 無 障 典 範 WONG Wing Kwan- BEd (Hons) Primary - Chinese Major Sweden It is our pleasure to participate in this study tour program this year. During the program, we have enhanced different skills such as communication skills, multi-task handling skills and problem solving skills. We became more sensitive and caring about the disable group in terms of policies, social facilities, education and volunteering. This tour highly enhances our knowledge and awareness of disables needs. We will keep working on the small groups in Hong Kong. KAN Wai Fung- BEd (Hons) Primary Chinese Major Sweden This tour is an unforgettable experience to me. Through series pre- tour activities, I learned that being a leader is not just to coordinate the teammates and get the job done. Caring and trust are essential in achieving successful team work. I loved the debriefing every night during the tour. We could share our feelings and learn from each other. To be a good listener is important to foster communication. In the tour, everyone owned the project and had the satisfaction after task completion. We are not just getting the fish, but learn how to fishing which is valuable to our future. It is my pleasure to recommend this program to my friends and classmates. TSANG Hung - BEd (Hons) Primary Chinese Major Sweden The most important thing l learnt from this program is the empowerment of self-confidence to overcome difficulties. Before the tour, I always seek help from others when facing problems, but now I will try to find the solution by myself. I realized that try to believe in myself as important as to believe in others and it is a crucial factor to building a team and to be a good leader. This study tour offered me a great opportunity to improve myself and leadership skills which are extremely important in my future. I strongly recommend other students to join this program because you can gain a lot from it and it is a memorable experience in your life. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

46 City For All 典 型 生 活 LEUNG Yung - BEd (Hons) Primary - Chinese Major Sweden YIK Yuen Yee- BEd (Hons) Primary Mathematics Major Sweden City for all was the main theme of our study tour in Sweden. During the tour, we visited many organizations to gain better understanding on the concept of City for all. We are also impressed by the city design in Stockholm which is not only to take care of the disabled people, but also establish a community for all citizens, like elderly and children. The idea of The disability is not because of the people physical handicapped but the city design impressed me very much. Personally, this tour was a great training opportunity for my development. Before the tour, my leadership style was tending to be functional. I am the responsible leader and can make right decisions and co-ordinate the team members to achieve the goal. Now I have learnt to be an influential leader to convince and inspire others. In this tour, I learnt how to enhance others ability. Before the tour, I used to assign tasks depending on the members willingness and their strengths. However, it might not be the best way for their personal growth because they only got the chances to show their talent, but didn t have any chance to improve their weakness, or to challenge them.in the tour, I learnt to give some challenging tasks for the participants with support. After completion of the tasks, the participants have the sense of achievement and ready to take challenges. This experience enhances my leadership skill on people empowerment. CHOI Yi Ki Natalie - BEd (Hons) Primary - Chinese Major Sweden A leader has many duties to accomplish. I am a task oriented leader. In order to ensure all activities proposed could be carried out smoothly, I would plan all the things and ask my team members to follow my orders and forget to take care of the personal growth of teammates. In fact, the team members growth is more important than the task accomplishment. They can learn from the experience. In the past, I would not take the risk because I was afraid of the task failing. Now I learnt that while accomplishing tasks is important, it was as much a means as it was an end. The critical factor of this change is because of our honesty. Every participant shared their feelings and experiences in each debriefing sessions. And we, as organizing committee member, explained the decisions with concrete reasons in order to get their understanding. The mutual understanding and trust not only made the tour successful but also let me to taste of truly successful leadership. Student Affairs Office

Other than gaining the knowledge related to sustainable waste management in Stockholm, we have also acquired the fundamental elements for our future personal development; they are responsibility, calm, optimistic and cooperation. We are glad to be granted a chance to experience a self-initiated journey and learn to tackle a great deal of problems on our own in the foreign country. Moreover, as the leaders of the tour, we have acquired leadership skill of having effective division of labor and proper task assignments for the teams as well as getting everything well-prepared and predicting the possible difficulties in the trip. Communication skills are also enhanced when seeking valuable comments from the institute s professors and having meetings with the Swedish host organization representatives. Our problem-solving skills on handling the while-trip itinerary and maintaining harmonious relationship between the members are empowered from organizing this activity. 49 48 Overseas Environmental Protection Exploration Programmes Taiwan Tour Tokyo Tour Student Affairs Office

In the past two years, two study tours on environmental protection were organized. The aims of the tours are: (a) to facilitate students understanding of how environmental protection ideas can be successfully implemented in an Asia-Pacific country/city; (b) to enhance students knowledge on environmental conservation for their future career and/or own enrichment; (c) to develop students leading, organization, coordination, interpersonal and problemsolving skills through planning and implementation of off-shore activities. The destinations were Taiwan (Kenting, Kaohsiung) and Japan (Tokyo) respectively. SAO was the organizer but what is special about the tour in 2013 is that a proposal writing competition was held. Students formed themselves into teams and submitted proposals on exploration of environmental protection. The winning team became the Organizing Committee (OC) of the study tour in the summer of They were student leaders who have co-organized the tour with SAO decided the theme, destination, itinerary, duration, etc of the study tour. 51 50 Taiwan TAM Ngao Suet - BEd (Hons) Early Childhood Education Participant Kenting was famous for its natural scenery, like coastal rocks, forest park, beach and lake. Balance has to be achieved between natural conservation and economic development. By expanding tourism in a sustainable way, the industry could protect the environment while disseminating conservation messages to tourists. Before the trip, I thought that 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and saving resources were already good enough. However, after visiting Shalin Life Education Centre, I contemplated on the deeper meaning of environmental protection. We learnt of the background of those abandoned and rescued wild animals in the Centre. Their sad stories told us how selfish human beings could be, and how precious life is. I think the real meaning of environmental protection is that apart from saving resources, man should also respect nature and ensure the rights of other animals. YU Pui Ling - BEd (Hons) Primary General Studies Major Participant Economic development, social harmony and environmental protection all have to be considered in order to attain sustainability. Among these, I think environmental protection is the most important of all. Human beings rely on the environment for survival. If man does not cherish the environment, it will be destroyed and lost forever, not to mention achieving economic development and social harmony. Often, for convenience s sake we have harmed our environment, e.g. throwing rubbish, use plastic bags, not recycling resources, etc. The government should educate students to build up environmental-friendly habits at an early stage. Ideas like Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Refuse (to use something) should be conveyed to children by action. Environmental protection is actually easy to achieve. Given our determination to protection our only Earth, each one of us can take a step further and do more. Student Affairs Office

Tokyo FAN Lun Ming - BEd (Hons) Liberal Studies OC Member I have benefited a lot from organizing this tour, both in the planning and implementation process as well as the learning experience in Tokyo. Although there were difficulties and challenges, these have strengthened our capability to handle changes. I would like to thank other OC members and the SAO for their full support and assistance. Through this journey, we have enriched our knowledge and awareness of environmental protection and in particular, the treatment of solid wastes. While Hong Kong has much room to develop the recycling industry as in Japan, the most important thing, of course, is waste reduction which Hong Kong can definitely do more. Apart from the debriefing and sharing sessions during the trip, the most rewarding experience was the discussion on Hong Kong s environmental policy after the tour. The experience gained from the tour can be related to our daily living and has aroused our concerns on the environment. LAI Hiu Hon - BEd (Hons) Primary General Studies Major OC Member During the 5-day tour, we have visited water recycling plant, incinerators and advanced technology exhibition centres. Through visits and exchanges, we observed their good practices which provided us with new perspectives for reflection and strengthened our personal growth. There are many differences between Hong Kong and Japan, especially the environmental awareness of citizens and the government s policies and facilities. We would like to make some suggestions concerning environmental education in Hong Kong:.Put more emphasis on environmental education and civic-mindedness to build up good habits and behavior.strengthen family and school education to nurture children s awareness on environmental protection like 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) All OC members have spent much effort on the tour and the experience was so unforgettable. The interpersonal, communication and leadership skills I have acquired will be very useful in future. Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014

52 A Message to All from Director of Student Affairs Student Affairs Office

The HKIEd and the Student Affairs Office are proud to have been able to offer students these opportunities over the past years. Students active participation in these experiential learning programmes has enriched their personal experiences, and has been vital to whole person development. We are incredibly thankful to all our partnership organizations across the world for giving our students the chance to gain work experience, to hone their leadership skills, to conduct service, or to increase their cultural awareness. They left us as young students and have come back as mature adults. As the range of programmes continue to grow, we look forward to support from more and more organizations, so as to allow more students to broaden their experiences. Over the years, our partner organizations have been glad of the input of our students. Here I urge more organizations to tap into the wealth of young talent at HKIEd. At the same time, I encourage students to increase participation in these programmes. Student participants gained the skills and knowledge necessary for success in their career and life; no matter where they go in the future, they will be equipped with the tools to succeed at whatever tomorrow s society demands of them. On behalf of the SAO, I would like to sincerely thank all partners for their continued support and students who contributed sharing articles to this booklet. Without their dedication, our missions cannot be accomplished. Dr. Tom Fong Director of Student Affairs The Hong Kong Institute of Education Student Experiential Learning Programme 2013 and 2014
