1 Faculty of Divinity, Trinity College Outcomes for the Master of Divinity degree Graduates of the Trinity College Master of Divinity degree will demonstrate (1) a graduate level and ecumenically justifiable understanding of the religious heritage of the Christian world, and in particular of the Anglican Church of Canada 1, by demonstrating (a) a critical and broad knowledge of the Old Testament and the New Testament, (b) a reasoned account of the teachings of Christianity and of Classical Anglicanism, (c) a critical and broad knowledge of the history of Christianity, and of the international and North American Anglican forms of it. (2) a knowledge and understanding of their cultural context, including principles and issues of contemporary social ethics, a critical perspective on the global, multicultural and cross-cultural aspects of that context, and a developed capacity to understand their own culture and at least one other culture in which they have experienced ministry. (3) a reflective knowledge of their personal and spiritual formation, and of their approach to counselling and reflection; and their assessment of the variety of Anglican spiritualities. (4) their assessment of (a) their own capacity for public leadership and ministry, (b) the principles of Anglican liturgical practice, and (c) the relation of practical ministry to other disciplines. WORKING DRAFT August 27, Students admitted to the Master of Divinity degree at Trinity, who are not members of the Anglican Church of Canada, will be allowed to demonstrate, mutatis mutandis, an understanding based on another faith community. Biblical Department TRB 1007H Introduction to the Old Testament To trace the development of both the nation and the culture of Israel from its inception to its restoration within the context of the international politics of the Ancient Near East; To elucidate such major biblical concepts and practices as covenant, sacrifice, the purity laws, and the diverse presentations of God; To demonstrate an understanding of the role prophecy played in Israel by becoming familiar with the various themes stressed especially by the writing prophets; To discuss the principal critical methods scholars use to exegete the text, particularly the approach known as source criticism. TRB 1501H Introduction to the New Testament To understand and explain the context and theology of the four canonical gospels and the Acts of the Apostles; To show familiarity with the social and historical context of each gospel; To demonstrate their knowledge of the critical methods of exegesis of the New Testament Page 2

Pastoral Department TRP1613H Identity, Church and Society Students who successfully complete this course will be able: To approach the ministry of the church and of its members in terms of the baptismal covenant and the Marks of Mission of the Anglican Communion; To understand the ordained ministerial role in light of one s own self and desire, of the church and its purpose in God s mission, and of the social and cultural contexts that influence both the ordained person and the church: To reflect on and interpret influential elements of the context in its engagement with self and church; To interpret and reflect critically on the church s activities in light of God s mission in the world, as disclosed in scripture, liturgy, and theology. Theological Department TRT 1101H Introduction to Systematic Theology To discern the linkages among core doctrines in Catholic tradition; To demonstrate basic knowledge of the theological topics of revelation, the Trinity, creation and Christ. TRT 1711H Introduction to Philosophy for Theological Students To show familiarity with the disputed character of the philosophic enterprise and of the complexity of the discipline today; To demonstrate basic knowledge of the history of philosophy in the west, and particularly of its Greek origins; To account for the impact these developments had on Christianity in its early development; To demonstrate an understanding of the long-range impact of these developments on Christianity with particular reference to the re-emergence of Aristotelian thought in the twelfth century.. TRT 2942H Ethics and Society To reflect upon religious ethics within their current public context; To understand the relationship between universal principles and particular needs of human beings; To understand their Christian values in ways sensitive to the non-christian pluralistic society in which they live; To demonstrate knowledge of a variety of ethical methodologies, religious and secular. 7 TRT 3566H Studies in Anglican Theology To give an account of the development of the theology behind the Thirty-Nine Articles and the Book of Common Prayer and of its justification in traditional theological principles and in the principles of the early Reformation To show understanding of the significance of the Puritan program and its rejection To understand the development of a distinctive Anglican theological pattern, and to give illustrations from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. 8 TRD 3010H Pastoral Ministry 5. Field Education and Internship Students undertake a full-time field education placement in ministry. The aim of the course is to develop basic competencies in various aspects of pastoral ministry as identified in a student generated learning agenda and developed in a learning covenant with the instructor and site supervisor. General learning will include but not be limited to how to accomplish integration into a parish ministry team, techniques for understanding the context of ministry, how to take leadership in parish administration, how to undertake parish visits, how to practice the art of pastoral preaching, how to evaluate performance in ministry, and how to understand ministry in theological terms. Basic Requirements: Completion of a Pre-Internship supervised ministry engagement of at least 120 hours. Completion of a full-time Internship of at least 500 hours of supervised ministry engagement. Completion of a Project in Ministry of up to 120 hours of ministry engagement in one area of specialization. Writing Assignments: 1. Learning Agenda. 2. Learning Covenant. 3. Brief history of the ministry site. 4. Report on a mid-term oral evaluation. 5. Written evaluations by site supervisor and student. 6. A Ministry Case Study presented at a concluding residential conference. TRD 3020Y Christian Education Students undertake a Christian Education project in a parish setting. The student will develop and test a philosophy of Christian education. Skills learned will be in selecting and planning program, preparing and executing sessions, and evaluation. Written Assignments: 1. An essay setting out a philosophy of Christian Education. 2. An account of the genesis of the Christian Education program. 3. A journal documenting session planning and what actually happened. 4. An annotated bibliography of resources used in the program. 5. An essay assessing the philosophy of Christian Education in the light of having executed the program. TRD 3030H Theology of Ministry The objective is to set out a theological understanding of ministry practice based on 500 hours of supervised pastoral engagement. Learning will be skill in understanding the practice of ministry in theological terms. Written Assignment: An essay of approximately 5000 words addressing the following: 1. A case study including verbatim reports, of an incident of ministry. 2. An essay on the theological resources engaged in the practice of ministry. 3. An essay on the resources engaged that were not explicitly theological. 4. A summary essay on the student s vocational direction. Page 8

Two papers. Each student will undertake a counselling relationship with a classmate. TRP 2134H Shaping Space for Worship TRP 2204H The Challenge and the Promise: Spirituality in the Aging TRP 2304H Preaching in the Round To develop an awareness of different and newer sermonic forms suitable for conveying the gospel message To discover his/her creative gifts for developing some or all of these sermonic forms To learn when, where, and how these sermonic forms are most suitably employed TRP 3371H Preaching Apocalyptic Texts To understand the genre apocalypse and its related forms in the Bible and related literature; To apply exegetical methods that focus on the text's form or genre; To use a variety of homiletical methods which focus on the form of the text; To gain experience in reflecting on how to use the above skills in a sermon. TRP 3538H Death/Dying/Grief The course surveys basic research on dying and grief with a view to provide tools for pastoral care of the dying and counselling the bereaved. 1 Book Report.
