1 School: WIMS Year: 2016 Current NCLB Status Current ABC Status Mission: Our mission at WIMS is to grow the entire student academically and socially in a safe environment. We will achieve this goal by maintaining high expectations and preparing our students to productively contribute to society. We believe in respect for others, learning, all differences, and ourselves. Our focus area is: Vocabulary Summary Overall goal By the end of 2017, 100% of WIMS students will meet expected growth on reading EOG, math EOG, Science EOG, and final exams assessments. Target goal Increase growth rating for WIMS by 10% to meet or exceed expected growth as measured by EVAAS. This growth will be shown by 100% of WIMS students growing at least 3 points on reading EOG, math EOG, Science EOG, and final exam assessments by the end of 2016 Approaches/Strategies All teachers: have a vocabulary goal as part of PDP, imbedding vocabulary into CAs, school wide word of the day Strategies will be to continue professional development on vocabulary and best practices Measures; we will use to monitor our progress toward reaching our goal: Performance/Impact: CAs, benchmarks, EOG scores, final exam scores Fidelity of implementation: classroom walkthroughs, lesson plans, teachers PDPs, PLC meeting minutes During the 90 day cycle time for cycle 1 and 2 we will revisit/monitor our plan every 9 weeks 1

2 P PLAN: Identify the gap and the approach ISS WIMS Reading Reading Reading Math Math Math Data Analysis. Answer the following question using any data and/or information you have about performance in this area 1. In order to meet your Overall Goal, what is the most important area that needs improving and why? Vocabulary, our school overall is showing a gap with EOG scores and final exam scores when compared to ISS and to the scores for school year data. 2. What approaches/strategies are contributing to your success in this area and what data suggests this? 3. What are opportunities for improvement, gap or barriers are in this area? Students may not have the background knowledge for the vocabulary. All grade levels in both math and reading are below district averages and have decreased from school year. 4. What seems to be the root cause of the problem and what data suggests this? Low staff morale, multiple staff changes, low parental involvement. Staff and parent climate survey, staff SCAN , and poverty (67% free and reduced lunch). Although there have been improvements with staff climate, there is still room for improvement. Reflection: 2

3 5. What approaches/strategies could you deploy to address the root cause and support meeting your overall goal? Directly and implicitly teaching all vocabulary, spiraling the vocabulary throughout the year. 6. What research did you review to support the use of these strategies/approaches? NAEYC New Research on Early Disparities: Focus on Vocabulary and Language Processing Psychology Today Tackling the Vocabulary Gap Between Rich and Poor Children ASCD Teaching Children Vocabulary for the Common Core 7. What performance measures will you use to monitor impact of your approach/strategy? To progress monitor we will use classroom tests and CAs 8. What measure will you use to monitor fidelity of deployment of your strategy/approach? The measure of fidelity will be measured through classroom walkthroughs, teachers PDPs, and classroom tests/cas 9. What professional development, if any, will be offered in cycle 1 to support the staff in implementing the approach? There will be professional development for vocabulary through ERPD, during subject alike PLC meetings strategies will be discussed and support given, in department meetings, through cross curricular meetings, sharing out of activities through weekly updates, and IF/BLC supporting and implementing strategies with teachers in the classroom. 10. Through faculty meetings and Professional Development as well as SIT and SIP team meetings. 3
