ICA CHIROPRACTIC CERTIFICATION IN WELLNESS SCIENCE PROGRAM: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS The ICA Chiropractic Certification in Wellness Science is an acclaimed educational program that offers an exceptional combination of groundbreaking research updates, important clinical applications, and practical lifestyle management, provided in the context of chiropractic care. Successful completion of the requisites for certification leads to the C.C.W.P. designation as a Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner, credentialed through the ICA Council on Wellness Science for Doctors of Chiropractic. 1. WHAT ARE THE BASIC PARTS OF ICA CERTIFICATION IN WELLNESS SCIENCE? The Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner (C.C.W.P.) certification process includes the following main components: Four on-site seminars, covering 12 hours of module content each session and taught by James L. Chestnut, B.Ed., MSc., D.C., C.C.W.P. and Richard Baxter, B.Eng., D.C. Four home-study modules, registered for and carried out under the direction of Dr. Chestnut, who forwards the results to the ICA Council on Wellness Science. Membership in the ICA Council on Wellness Science, the credentialing body Final Certification Examination, administered by the Council; it is registered for separately when candidates have concluded the attendance and other requirements and offered several times a year on-line through a customized website exam service. 2. WHAT ARE THE TITLES OF THE FOUR WELLNESS PROGRAM MODULE TOPICS? Module 1 Scientific and Philosophical Validation of the Chiropractic Wellness Paradigm Module 2 Wellness Nutrition and Natural Health Module 3 Wellness Physical Fitness and Spinal Hygiene Module 4 Wellness State of Mind, Emotional Health and Secrets of Eliciting Patient Lifestyle Change 3. CAN I BENEFIT FROM TAKING INDIVIDUAL SEMINARS IN THE SERIES, EVEN IF I M NOT WORKING TOWARDS CERTIFICATION? Yes! Each seminar module in the program provides valuable information and useful tools you can use immediately to improve the quality of life for your patients and for you and your family. You can attend modules in any order; ICA registrants get a certificate of attendance. 4. CAN I BRING MY SPOUSE AND MY STAFF TO THESE SEMINARS? IS A LAY PERSON ALLOWED TO ATTEND? Chiropractic Assistants, office staff members, spouses and other lay persons are welcome to register and attend these seminar modules. The attendance category and registration rate is provided right on the registration forms, which are posted on the website at or you can call or (EST office hours). 5. ARE CHIROPRACTIC STUDENTS ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM? Chiropractic students are encouraged to attend! Gain valuable knowledge on how chiropractic s science, art, and philosophy can be optimally applied in practice, plus important scientific validation right from the research record, along with SICA benefits. ICA Council on Wellness Science FAQ 06/07 1
6. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION AND REGISTER FOR THE WELLNESS SCIENCE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM SEMINARS? Visit ICA s website at for detailed information on the ICA Council on Wellness Science and the Wellness Science seminars, including dates, locations, registration forms (both online and downloadable for return by fax or mail) and links. Additional questions and registration can be addressed by calling ICA at (toll-free for US and Canada) or weekdays (Eastern Time Zone). 7. ARE THERE MEMBERSHIP OR MULTI-SESSION ENROLLMENT DISCOUNTS? Members of the ICA and the ICA Council on Wellness Science receive a special discount of $40.00 off their registration for each on-site seminar presented by the ICA. First-year graduate doctors of chiropractic also receive a special discount to their registration fee. Advance paid registration for all four of the onsite modules provides a discount of $100 to the total full rate registration amount. Student ICA members receive a special discount to their registration rate, and nonmembers join right through their first registration at the non-member rate. Chiropractic Assistants (CA s) and non-d.c. spouse registrations are also offered at a special rate. Membership in the ICA or the Council on Wellness Science is not required, but you do enjoy membership benefits such as discounted registration rates. 8. WHAT HAPPENS IF I REGISTER FOR A SEMINAR AND LATER FIND I HAVE A CONFLICT WITH THE DATE OR LOCATION; DO I LOSE MY FEE IF I CHANGE? For ICA-sponsored Wellness Seminar on-site program registrations, you can just contact the ICA offices and indicate your transfer needs, and reassign your registration fee to another ICA Wellness Seminar module. If you choose to cancel your registration, ICA will refund your registration fee minus a $30 cancellation charge. For Wellness Seminar programs offered elsewhere through other venues, you will need to check with them directly on their cancellation policies for your registration. 9. CAN I CANCEL MY REGISTRATION AT ANY TIME? You may cancel your registration to the onsite modules you are enrolled in through ICA at any time prior to the seminar meeting. You can arrange for a transfer or a refund. 10. ARE THERE SPECIAL REGISTRATION FEES FOR RE-TAKING ONSITE MODULES? You are welcome to repeat any of the on-site seminars. There is both a Re-run Discount for previously registered attendees and a special C.C.W.P. Refresher Discount if someone completed the entire program and holds a current C.C.W.P.. Rates for Re-run and Refresher discounts are based on levels of prior attendance and membership status; contact the Wellness Seminar program director at ICA. 11. HOW DO I EARN CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT TOWARDS CHIROPRACTIC LICENSE RENEWAL? The ICA Wellness Science seminars are co-sponsored with Life Chiropractic College West (LCCW); and continuing education credit is applied for in most states in the U.S. for the full 12-hours of credit per seminar module weekend. ICA Council on Wellness Science FAQ 06/07 2
Listings of state approvals for credit for individual modules are available through: ICA s website at and the LCCW CE website at Calling ICA or the LCCW Postgraduate Dept. at (college switchboard) or (Pacific Time Zone office hours) For Chiropractic CE credit: As a service to doctors taking multiple seminars and don t need CE for all of them, the basic registration fee does not include continuing education records processing. The CE servicing fee is separately indicated at registration. 12. HOW DO I GET ATTENDANCE CREDIT APPLIED TOWARDS THE C.C.W.P. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS? Attendance records for participants in each on-site seminar in the module series are forwarded to the ICA Council on Wellness Science (CWS) and archived by the Council for credit towards completing the C.C.W.P. Certification educational requirements. 13. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF EARNING THE CERTIFIED CHIROPRACTIC WELLNESS PRACTITIONER (C.C.W.P.) CREDENTIAL? The ICA Council on Wellness Science C.C.W.P. certification sets you apart and indicates your enhanced authority on wellness with your colleagues, patients and your community. The Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner designation demonstrates a dedication to quality health care and a commitment to learning and applying important advances in wellness science to patient care while realistically supporting practical, healthy lifestyle changes. ICA Chiropractic Certification in Wellness Science uniquely prepares you to help meet a real and urgent public need in promoting wellness principles and lifestyle for people of all ages in the context of chiropractic science and practice. 14. ONCE I REGISTER TO ATTEND, IS THERE A DEADLINE FOR FINISHING THE PROGRAM FOR COMPLETING THE CERTIFICATION? The Council on Wellness Science does not at this time require set deadlines for completing the program once begun. However, it is anticipated that the on-site and take-home modules would be completed within a time frame of approximately two years. There are significant learning benefits to completing the onsite and at-home modules of the program without interruption; in addition the Wellness Science certification program is dedicated to providing up-to-date information, and periodic updates could be reflected in the Final Exam. 15. WHEN CAN I START THE AT-HOME SECTIONS? DO I WAIT UNTIL I FINISH ALL FOUR OF THE ON-SITE MODULES? The on-site seminars in the program present extensive information and provide the important clinical, practical, scientific and cultural groundwork for the program content for each module topic; the take-home module materials are self-paced study programs that build on that foundation. Once you have attended a particular on-site module you can then undertake the corresponding at-home study. You do not need all four on-site first. 16. HOW DO I GO ABOUT COMPLETING THE TAKE-HOME PORTIONS OF THE WELLNESS PROGRAM MODULES? When you have attended an on-site seminar module and are ready for the corresponding at-home portion, you register through Dr. Chestnut s Wellness Practice website under the Home Study Module Registration section of the site at ICA Council on Wellness Science FAQ 06/07 3
The registration for distance learning (take-home) portions of the program is made through payment to Dr. Chestnut, who provides the resources and coursework and grades the completed assignments (module fee discounts for ICA and CWS members). When a participant completes take-home module coursework, Dr. Chestnut forwards notification to the ICA Council on Wellness Science. 17. IS THERE A TIME REQUIREMENT FOR WHEN I COMMIT AND ANNOUNCE MY INTENTION OF WORKING TOWARDS THE C.C.W.P. CERTIFICATION? There is no set time limit as such; when the ICA Council on Wellness Science is notified that the last at-home module is satisfactorily completed, information about registration for the Certification Final Examination is sent out. If someone does not wish to sit the exam and become certified they simply notify the Council and do not return the registration form. 18. ARE CHIROPRACTIC ASSISTANTS OR OTHER NON-DC PARTICIPANTS ELIGIBLE FOR THE C.C.W.P. CERTIFICATION? The Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner designation is credentialed through the ICA Council on Wellness Science (CWS) as a certification for Doctors of Chiropractic. While CAs and other non-d.c. health professionals may attend all of the on-site modules, they are not eligible for the D.C. C.C.W.P. certification. In addition to attending on-site seminar modules, CA s and other non-dc participants may also register through Dr. Chestnut s website for the take-home modules. Upon completion of the on-site and take-home portions of the Wellness program modules (an examination is not included), CA s and other non-dc participants may receive a certificate of recognition from Dr. Chestnut s The Wellness Practice. 19. ARE CHIROPRACTIC STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR C.C.W.P. CERTIFICATION FROM THE ICA COUNCIL ON WELLNESS SCIENCE? Chiropractic students may attend and complete all four of the program modules (both on-site and at-home portions) while they are completing their Doctor of Chiropractic education. They are not eligible to become candidates for C.C.W.P. Certification until after they have graduated from chiropractic college and have received their D.C. degree. Following graduation, the new graduate needs to contact the ICA Council on Wellness Science to indicate their transition to field doctor and address remaining arrangements. 20. HOW DO I GO ABOUT REGISTERING FOR AND TAKING THE CERTIFICATION FINAL EXAMINATION? When the take-home module assignments are completed by an individual attendee, Dr. Chestnut notifies the ICA Council on Wellness Science. The Council contacts you with notification on the fourth take-home module coursework being received, reviews your requisites completion and prepares your transcripts as a candidate for certification. The C.C.W.P. Certification Final Examination is offered via an on-line testing service at intervals during the calendar year. Candidates are sent an examination application form and introductory information. The application fee for test site registration, set up and servicing is $ US per candidate. When registrations are processed and the site is prepared for posting with the group of candidates taking that test cycle, candidates are sent personalized links to a secure website connection and can log in at the time they choose to complete the exam during that testing period. ICA Council on Wellness Science FAQ 06/07 4
21. ARE THERE COURSE NOTES FOR REFERENCE WITH THE SEMINAR MODULES? The seminar course content is extensive, and instead of course hand out notes as such, there are reference books that have been written by Dr. Chestnut addressing information covered in each of the subjects areas addressed in the four module topics. While it can be beneficial to have the book relating to the module topic ordered in advance to bring with you when attending that seminar, they are not required for attending on-site. For more information on ordering the books, visit ICA s website at or Dr. Chestnut s website at HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION AND REGISTER FOR THE WELLNESS SCIENCE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM SEMINARS? Visit ICA s website at for detailed information on the ICA Council on Wellness Science and on the Wellness Seminars, including dates, locations, links, and registration forms (both online and downloadable for return by fax or mail). Additional questions and registration by phone can be directed by to [email protected] and by calling the ICA offices at (toll-free for US and Canada) or weekdays (Eastern Time Zone office hours).
