Michele Sliger Sliger Consulting, Inc. Co-author of The Software Project Manager s Bridge to Agility! Former Board member of the Scrum Alliance! Steering committee member for the PMI- ACP initiative! Certified Scrum Trainer (CST)! BS-MIS, MBA, PMP, PMP-ACP! Over 25 years of software development experience, with the last 15 in Agile 2
Lean-Agile Frameworks Scrum (Ken Schwaber) XP (Kent Beck) Lean Software Development (Mary Poppendieck) Kanban (David Anderson) Crystal (Alistair Cockburn) Dynamic System Development Method (Dane Faulkner) Adaptive Software Development (Jim Highsmith) Feature Driven Development (Jeff DeLuca) 3
Scrum is the Most Popular Method 4
Scrum in Non-Software Projects 5
Writing Books The Software Project Manager s Bridge to Agility Lonely Planet s Travel Guides Prior to Scrum, the development of a book was very sequential and required many hand-offs and took a long a time to get a book out from conception to publication. Now they involve all players needed to put a book together (writers, graphic artists, desktop publishing, marketing, editors etc) and incrementally develop the book chapter by chapter following the Scrum framework. Source: Scrum for Non- Software Projects. 6
A Venture Capital Company Openview Venture Partners Use Scrum in projects in management, sales, marketing, finance, and customer support for portfolio companies, as well as pushing Scrum out to their portfolio companies. One example: the Labs team use one-week sprints to execute operational value-add projects for their portfolio companies, perform due diligence, and institutionalize their value-add capabilities. 8 Scrum in Church Unitarian Universalist Churches in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Delaware, and Virginia Primarily used by office staff and volunteers to both keep the engine running and in new initiatives Projects include pastoral care, children and youth, membership development, social justice, music, facilities, finances and fund raising Source: Scrum in Church: Saving the World One Team at a Time 8
Wikispeed SGT01 9
Building a Car Wikispeed is a lean automotive company that has engineered the SGT01 an ultralight four-seat commuter car that gets 114 mpg (gas engine) The SGT01 is the lightest road-legal car to receive a five-star crash-equivalency rating on front, side, and rear impact and was available for purchase at $28,886 (sold out) The C3 is their newer model, $17,995 assembled or $10,000 as a kit Source: 10

Scrum in Primary and Secondary Schools Overtly and officially using Scrum, not to manage the school, but for students to use to manage their curriculum Overtly and officially using the more generic Agile Unofficially being agile via alternative ed programs like the Democratic model in use at Sudbury schools 13

A Variety of Agile Practices AAA Life Insurance in Michigan: their facilities dept adopted agile after watching/assisting their IT dept Motawi Tileworks: uses task board to track work Illuminating Concepts: designs lighting for Vegas hotels and casinos, uses cards for planning and holds retrospectives Schox Patent Group (law firm): work in sprints, pair, use task board, 3x week stand-ups Source: Agile Methods Influencing Non-IT Projects 23
Denver Health Medical Center Instituted Lean in 2005 and realized an increase of $54M in revenue between "What are the things that keep you from working efficiently?" And "Are there things you see happening to patients that shouldn't? One of the reasons Lean is so often successful is that it's not management telling the staff how to improve it's the other way around. Dr. James Levett, cardiac surgeon 24
Denver Health Medical Center Launched a centralized process for ordering supplies, parts, and equipment (saved over $613k the first year) Consolidated and rearranged work stations and equipment to improve workflow (decreased turnaround times for lab results by 25%!) Reduced non-life-threatening emergency room wait times (went from seeing 2 patients an hour to 6 patients an hour) 25
Clinica Family Health Services Doctors share control in a pod-based team with psychologists, medical assistants, nutritionists, and specialists (patients are assigned to pods) Wall charts track things like number of diabetics who received early-warning foot exams Two daily standups to discuss patients coming in the next few hours Pioneered the group-visit model Handles over 170,000 patient visits a year 26
A Variety of Applications Personal Kanban used by individuals to better manage their time Lean and Kanban used by manufacturing Extreme Manufacturing used by WIKISPEED Agile and Collaborative Law used in the legal profession Lean Healthcare used in clinics and hospitals Lean Construction used by the construction industry 27
And One That Sure Looks Agile: 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park Each episode is written, recorded, animated and delivered in just six days One scene at a time instead of serial handoffs from storyboard to character design to background design to editorial to audio 28
Trey Parker, co-creator of South Park: 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park I always feel like that I wish I had another day with this show. That s the reason that there s so many episodes of South Park we re able to get done, cause there just is a deadline and you can t keep going. Cause there d be so many shows where I d be going no it s not ready yet, it s not ready yet, and I would have spent four weeks on one show. All you do is start secondguessing yourself and rewriting stuff and it gets over-thought, and it would have only been 5% better. 29
What Else? What are some other processes you ve seen that could be considered agile? What aspects of your life could benefit from incorporating agile practices? Share! agilelightbulb.com 30
