Kanban in Software Development and Project Management Are slippages in meeting development and project deadlines hugely impacting your profits? If you are looking for a new approach to unleash productivity, innovation, collaboration and creativity, investing in attending this event will provide you with the tools to do so, yielding significant results. Don't miss this unique opportunity, for the first time in South Africa, to attend these World Class events and learn directly from the co-founder of the use of Kanban in software development and as an added benefit, get to hear from and speak to a director of a company using Kanban in very large global healthcare information development programmes. After their February visit was postponed, we have, as promised, rescheduled the Kanban Workshops to follow the Agile Africa Conference, where both Dan Vacanti and Bennet Vallet will be presenting a keynote. Virtual Ventures (Pty) Ltd in Association with JCSE and Corporate Kanban bring you: A TWO DAY INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP WITH OPTIONAL THIRD DAY ADVANCED WORKSHOP ON KANBAN IN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT Learn How to Use Principles of Pull and Flow to Identify, Measure, and Significantly Reduce Delays through better predictability, visibility and operational efficiency! Workshops will be held in Johannesburg and in Cape Town in August PLANNED DATES AND CENTRES CENTRE EVENT FROM TO Johannesburg - Wits University PDH Cape Town (Venue to be announced) Two Day Kanban Workshop Wed 13th August Thurs 14th August Advanced Workshop extra Day (follows Executive Breakfast Fri 15th August Fri 15th August Executive Breakfast (approximately 2 hours) Fri 15th August Fri 15th August Two Day Kanban Workshop Mon 18th August Tues 19th August Advanced Workshop extra Day Wed 20th August Wed 20th August Executive Breakfast (approximately 2 hours) Thurs 21st August Thurs 21st August
Benefits of Attending As a participant in this unique two or three day event you will be exposed to several interactive and "hands-on" exercises introducing how to apply the Kanban Method to software development, including these key learning outcomes: Get a brief history of lean-agile principles and foundations of the Kanban method. Learn how: o to design & operate a Kanban system o to drive change by limiting work-in-progress and determine what your WIP limits should be o to capture, interpret, and use metrics to improve your current process o to manage risk and change negotiations into collaborative problem solving o to identify work item types, model workflows, and bring visibility to your software development process. o to recognize how the variability in current process policies impacts your workflow today o making policies explicit helps to facilitate changes and directs enhancements to your workflow. o to begin optimizing your workflow and how that will significantly impact bottom line o to measure and manage flow to identify meaningful and predictable Service Level Agreements You will also realise the importance of starting with current processes and roles and applying an gradual evolutionary continuous improvement approach as opposed to a big-bang approach You will be able to greatly increase predictability in your development process The class will show how using models will guide further evolution and improvements in your process. ADDITIONAL DAY 3 FOR EXISTING KAN BAN USERS OR THOSE REQUIRING MORE INFORMATION Predictability and Kanban o Classes of Service (pull policies) o Little's Law Deep Dive o Bottlenecks o Variability Portfolio Management and Kanban Forecasting and Simulation
SUGGESTED ATTENDEES FOR WORKSHOPS Application Development and Maintenance Teams - Software Development o Kanban helps Software Developers, Analysts, and Testers maintain a sustainable delivery pace while still meeting the enterprise's needs. PMO Teams - Project & Program Managers o Kanban helps PMO teams deliver projects from concept to launch, on-time and within budget. Product, Marketing, Business Development, & Operations Teams - Business Unit Managers o Kanban helps Business Unit Managers generate revenue and improve customer satisfaction by delivering products customers want, when they want them. Kanban is a new technique for managing a software development process in a highly efficient way. Kanban underpins Toyota's "just-in-time" (JIT) production system. Although producing software is a creative activity and therefore different to mass-producing cars, the underlying mechanism for managing the production line can still be applied.
Kanban it is not about: replacing existing software development workflow process. changing or removing your team's current titles and roles or adding new ones. a process that is only for support teams, maintenance teams, or development operations teams (or limited to workflows for software development or IT/IS services?). So what is it about then? In a nutshell, the Kanban Method is about learning how to optimize your current (workflow) process and how to identify opportunities for effectively improving it. Kanban focuses on making small, iterative changes that evolve business processes into more efficient and manageable work streams while avoiding the risks associated with massive, monolithic change. Used effectively, Kanban will help you and your organization evolve into a more efficient project delivery machine! Organisations looking for a new approach to unleash productivity, innovation, collaboration and creativity, you'll find this investment very well spent. Why use Kanban? Companies using Kanban have experienced huge benefits. For example, the following testimonial was obtained from Bennet Vallet, who has heavily involved with the use of Kanban at Siemens Medical Solutions. "Siemens Healthcare Solutions develop extremely large scale software information systems involving 50 development teams on three continents. The software information system is aimed at large healthcare enterprises and physician clinics - some of the most prestigious in the world. Having used Agile scrum since 2005, good results were achieved but a ceiling was reached in terms of quality and speed of development which were not good enough Siemens, with the help of Daniel Vacanti then introduced Kanban on top of Scrum, maintaining existing Agile XP practices. Through Daniels's guidance in the development of flow and use of Kanban's actionable metrics, we realized a 100% improvement in speed and quality in the first release using Kanban. Daniel also introduced new methods of forecasting and estimating using Monte Carlo simulation and cycle time metrics, resulting in our software development becoming extremely predictable. This was piloted on 20 teams. Based on these results all 50 teams are now taking on Kanban The results we achieved were far above our expectations in such a short period of time" Bennet Vallet, Director of Product Development at Siemens Healthcare
More information about the success of this project can be accessed at You will have the unique opportunity to hear from Bennet directly during the workshops about his experience in working with Daniel Vacanti's consulting services.
