1 PHD IN THEOLOGY 1.0 AIU-GENERAL INFORMATION Africa International University, AIU, is a private Christian University composed of several constituent schools: Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, NEGST; School of Professional Studies, SPS; and Institute for Study of African Realities, ISAR. 1.1 VISION AND MISSION Vision The Vision of AIU is Christ-centered leaders in Africa educated to transform God's people and the world. Mission To accomplish this vision AIU s mission is to educate Christ-centered leaders for the transformation of God's people and world through innovative programs, research, and community engagement. These statements of purpose were arrived at from both theological and missional analysis. A kingdom perspective moves us towards a more comprehensive understanding of our vision and mission. It also provides for a missional analysis of some of Africa s greatest needs (poverty, environmental degradation, injustice, disease, ignorance, war, fatalism and false hopes) suggesting that faithfulness to Christ and the mission of God mandates a more transformational approach to our scope and programs 1.2 OBJECTIVES This Mission is achieved through the following objectives: 1. To train men and women in the deeper understanding of the Christian faith and to prepare each student to evaluate knowledge in the light of scriptural truth. 2. To encourage growth in Christian character for faithful service to the church and society through various professions. 3. To promote informed, reflective and effective engagement in the major issues and challenges facing the church and society in Africa. 4. To enable each student to develop critical and creative, analytical and innovative thinking and research skills to address the concerns and needs of African Christianity and society. 5. To build institutional capacity for research, transmission and preservation of knowledge 6. To offer undergraduate and postgraduate education and non-formal program that will enhance the academic and personal development of students as life-long learners. 7. To stimulate and nurture Christian mission, witness and service in church and society. 1.3 CORE VALUES To become the kind of AIU community that God wants to be relevant to this vision and mission we need to treasure the right things. The following values therefore will be cultivated as we seek to become useful for the mission and vision entrusted to us: 1 1. Excellence (academically) with Relevance --a solutions approach to learning. 2. Faith with Integrity --a discipleship and missional approach to theology and spirituality.

2 3. Leadership with servanthood and Stewardship leadership that combines deep personal humility and humanity with an unwavering commitment to do the will of God at all costs. 4. Innovation with Community -- not ministry or marketplace soloists but team oriented leaders who seek creative and biblical solutions for the common good in their respective areas and callings. 1.4 PHILOSOPHY OF THE INSTITUTION Motivated by our vision, mission, core values, and by the conviction that learning is both rooted in and responsive to the culture and context, we seek to participate in God s mission in the world by bringing a Christ-centered world-view to bear on knowledge, research and its relevance to both the mission of God and the needs of Africa. All students will take a common core of integrative courses that are relevant to their programmes. Such a core is vital for engaging all branches of knowledge in a way that is biblical and missional. Critical to this pursuit then is a core of University teaching staff that strives to integrate the evangelical faith with their disciplines This philosophy serves as the university philosophy statement. Each constituent entity is to develop its own curriculum philosophy, which would be related to the university philosophy and relevant to the entity s distinctive purpose. Existing entities will retain their curriculum philosophy. 1.5 DISTINCTIVES In the increasingly competitive field of higher education in Kenya, We believe students will come to AIU for several features that set AIU apart: 1. Christian commitment. Because AIU is missionally Christian (committed to partnering in God s mission in all of life) it will appeal to prospective students in a variety of fields who want an education that takes biblical perspectives seriously. We identify with international evangelicalism as represented by the World Evangelical Alliance, the Lausanne movement, the Lausanne Covenant and its supporting documents. 2. Focus on Students. AIU places students at the centre of the learning experience and provides educational opportunities and experiences that facilitate self-discovery, spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual, and professional development. 3. Academic excellence. A passionate commitment to scholarship as mission, comprising academic excellence, innovative and relevant research, and life long learning. AIU is committed to research and an African Christianity that produces thoughtful biblical solutions to African problems. 4. Focused Academic Program. AIU will have an emphasis on post-graduate program but with strongly focused undergraduate program. 5. Innovative technology. By integrating innovative and cutting edge information and communications technology into its educational program, AIU will be a leader in this arena among private Christian universities. 2.0 PHD IN THEOLOGY The Theology Department is will start a PhD in theology with concentrations in three areas: Systematic Theology Theology and Culture Theology and Development. 2

3 All students in the program will take the core Theology courses; TH Student must take at least three courses in their concentration and two other courses from other concentrations. This will prepare them for effective ministry and give them a broader and integrative advantage to be effective and productive in their professional task as teachers. 2.1 RATIONALE FOR PHD IN THEOLOGY There are very few evangelical theologians in Africa today who have PhD degrees in Theology on the continent of Africa to teach in our graduate theological institutions. Most African scholars in our graduate institutions have PhD either in Biblical studies or Missions. While biblical studies and missions are critical for the Church s life and mission, theology I think is the most critical in the African context. Most of the questions society is facing are theological questions. The challenges facing the church in Africa today are theological in nature and therefore, theological reflection cannot be ignored and it must be given special and critical attention. The African Church lacks such deep theological reflection on critical religious, social, political, governance and economic, issues facing the Church in Africa and how theology has bearing on these matters facing humanity. We should be able to give sound biblical answers based on deep theological reflection on these issues in our graduate institutions where we train people for the leadership of the Church and society to be able to deal with these issues facing the African Church and society. More recently, we are being confronted with erroneous teachings based on distorted theology in our churches. This is one more reason why we need a solid and well grounded theological foundation to deal with false teaching in the Church. If we neglect this important foundation, it will affect the life of the Church in Africa. Bad theological foundation in the African Church will be disastrous for Africa. African Theological Institutions lack strong theological faculty at the graduate level where much of these issues are to be reflected upon and students equipped for the work of the ministry within the Church and society. This lack of theological teachers for our theological institutions at the graduate level is not good for the Church in Africa. Currently, people teaching theology classes in our theological institutions were not trained as theologians at the PhD level. With the shift of Christianity to the global south, the Church in Africa has great opportunity to contribute to theological reflection from the African context that would be beneficial to the global Church. This requires serious reflection at the highest level in academic theology. Training theologians at the PhD will go a long way to fulfill this responsibility that is placed on the African Church. We urgently need this PHD in theology at NEGST being a critical and leading Evangelical theological institution on the Continent of Africa. 2.3 PROGRAM OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES 1. To train and produce scholars, teachers, researchers, and theologians who can teach and research in the area of theology and positively influence and contribute to theological discourse in Africa and globally 2. To demonstrate advance research skills in the study of theology from a global and contextual perspectives 3. To equip scholars to understand the Gospel and theologically reflect on it to address the challenges facing the African Church and its societies 4. To analyze the social, religious, political and economic factors in shaping a contextually relevant theology and Christian witness in Africa 5. To promote further knowledge of, and active engagement in key theological issues that need attention in the African Church and society 6. To equip students with a set of knowledge, skills, competencies, and principles that will make them effective professionals in their area of expertise 3
